He didn't create any of the iconic characters but he was a pretty brilliant guy. Gamecube was pretty shitty but the Nintendo DS was huge amongst the generation right below mine and the Wii was revolutionary.
Shigeru Miyamoto is like the Japanese versions of Walt Disney. Iwata not as big of a name but Nintendo is still trying to make real games in a market saturated with post apocalyptic, greyscale/brownscale, first person shooters which teenage boys eat up. In comparison, Nintendo games are like technicolor dreamcoats.
