Will There Be Riots?

Why did the officer approach this guy and seize him unreasonably? Adjusting one's waistband suspiciously is not reasonable suspicion for a terry stop. The officers are supposed to at least throw in the word bulge (as in he was adjusting his waistband and they saw a bulge). It is sort of like how every traffic stop after 11 pm the driver has "red, watery, glassy eyes."

If he was just adjusting his belt, don't you think shooting the cop in the head was somewhat of an extreme reaction? If it were the other way around and the cop had shot the guy, it would be non-stop news and Rev. Al would have rushed back from Baltimore to lead the demonstrations. I'm thinking there may be a double standard here.

If he was just adjusting his belt, why did the officer seize him against his fourth amendment rights?

Im not trying to downplay the result, but police really should do a better job respecting the constitution and a lot of these encounters that turn bad can be avoided. There is a lot of animosity towards police in NYC right now, and much of it is the result of a police force that doesn't follow the laws they are sworn to upheld.

And if it were the other way around where a cop shot a guy for adjusting his belt, that should be non-stop news.

You have to wonder who exactly will want to go into police work in the near future. Nice combination of dangerous work, being reviled by significant segments of society, and the possibility of being charged with felonies just for trying to do your job.

Im sure the NYPD will still be comprised of the state's "finest."

Couldn't agree with you more, LGB. It's a no win situation for cops. Why would anyone want to put their lives in danger with the hatred police face every day.

There doesnt seem to be a shortage of people who want to walk around with a gun and have control over people in this country. Never has been. Statistics of law enforcement people dying on the job is at historic lows actually - and most of those are vehicle related. Add in the pay and the benefits and pensions - there will be no shortage of police.
