Recruiting for 2015 - General

I'm pretty sure that if he's at Nova on a track signing he can't play football -- at least for the first year. I think it's the same for basketball. too. I don't think it goes the other way -- signed football and basketball athletes can play other sports.

I might be wrong, but that's the way I think it goes.

You're probably right, ExCattyGuy. I am not sure of the rule.

FYI, Feagans has just indicated that it'll be T&F only at Villanova -- no football.

Also, I have been reminded that the late NLI signing date is April 15, so neither of these two recent additions can actually "sign" their letters of intent until that date. So perhaps I should not have used the word "signed" in the above posts -- they're committed but not yet "signed."

I think the men still need a strong 1500 runner, and so do the women. I'm hoping something is in the works. I'm hoping there is something in the works from the NZ/Australia connection.

I also go back to the days when Nova had an excellent hurdler, often running both hurdle events. I guess those days are over for the men, but the women have done very well there the last few years.

Looks like Villanova T&F has gotten a commitment from Danbury (CT) High School's Mike Morrow (as per his Twitter announcement of last night).

Morrow is a High Jump (PR = 6' 5") and Long Jump (PR = 20' 11") specialist.

Morrow has also thrown the shot, run the 60, and run the 300. His future at Nova may be as a multi-event athlete.

So, if I have this right, the recruits so far are as follows:

Women
Sarah Knowles NY 400
Sammy Brockoven OH mid-dist
Keleigh Hughes MA mid-dist
Bella Burda NY mid-dist
Adeline Scelzi VA pv
Alex Zimmerman PA discus
Ann Campbell Missouri mid-dist

One more just in on the women's side. Three-time Virginia Pole Vault State Champion Adeline Scelzi (PR = 12' 1") has committed to Villanova over the weekend. She won 2014 state indoor and outdoor PV titles and 2015 indoor PV title. Might be a heptathlete at Villanova, given her other skill set.

I believe the NCAA rule is that he can play football, but if he does then that scholarship also counts toward the football team's limit of 65 scholarships. Not a big deal unless Any Talley uses all 65 schollies for the fall.

Villanova has signed Lancaster PA (Manheim Township HS) discus specialist Alex Zimmerman. PR of 120' 5"

Villanova has gotten a commitment from 200 meter specialist Sterling Pierce (Rancocas Valley Regional High School, Mount Holly, NJ). Pierce is the son of 1992 Olympic bronze medalist & 1993 World Championship bronze medalist Jack Pierce.

His PRs are:

55m: 6.52
100m: 11.10
200m: 21.91 (USA #27, NJ #2) -- 2015 New Balance Indoor Nationals runner-up
400m: 51.12

Dyestat page for Sterling Pierce

Interesting, despite his father's pedigree, he didn't run track for his high school until 2014. Looks like he played lacrosse.

Is there a kid from Mount Vernon, N. Y. who has already run
almost 46 flat in the 400?

Hi Walt:

That fast quarter-miler from New York is Rai Benjamin (Mount Vernon). He ran 46.19 outdoors over 400 meters on April 4th. That's USA #2 this year. He's also run 21.06 (USA #3) indoors and 21.26 (USA #3) outdoors this year over 200 meters.

He's committed to UCLA.

Villanova has signed Ann Campbell (St. Teresa's Academy, Kansas City, MO) to its 2015 incoming class.

She was class 4A Missouri state runner-up in 2014 (as a junior) in the 1600, when she ran a 4:54.78 PR. At the same state meet she came 5th in the 3200, in a time of 11:02.87.

In cross country, she finished 5th in the 2013 state championship, and was 8th last fall in the 2014 state race.

Her PRs are:

1600: 4:54.78
3200: 11:01.94
5K XC: 18:09.80

Also, fellow Canadian Charlotte Prouse -- once on Villanova's radar -- signed with University of Washington Huskies today. 9:47.71 (3000) + 4:29.47 (1500)

Finally, Luke Gavigan (Tappan Zee, NY) signed with UNC-Chapel Hill. 1:54 (800) + 4:17 (mile) + 15:50 (5K XC)

Zach Wetzel ran a 3:48.6 1500 m against some college competition. Roughly that's about a 4:06 mile.

Actually it's Logan Wetzel and yes he did run a 3:48.6 1500 at the Hillsdale College Gina Relays event. Wetzel is nowhere near his peak and will thrive under Coach O'Sullivan. 2014 MHSAA Track & Field Championships he recorded the following times in the one day meet (1:50.2, 4:13, 1:53 and 50.6). He has been the anchor for the last two New Balance Nationals Champion DMR relay teams (NBIN Video link below) and there is some discussion gong around that this year's team has a chance to rival Alan Webb's record. Also anchored the US#4 4x800 in 1:49.6 Ultimate team player who has no purpose for individual accolades will fit perfectly into the Nova system.

Villanova men have added to the 2015 incoming class:

Andrew Marston (Conestoga HS, Berwyn, PA). He was 3rd at Pennsylvania 3A State XC Championship in 2014. PRs of 9:21.02 (2 miles), 9:01.25 (3200 meters), 8:39.42 (3000 meters), 4:16.43 (1600 meters).

Another addition here as well. Utsav Deshpande (Sachem East HS, NY) will run for Villanova. His PRs are 51.50 (400m), 55.57 (400 hurdles), 1:24.83 (600m).

Here's some info on new Villanova commit Lucas Arrivo (Ann Arbor, MI): PRs of 4:13.96 (1600) and 9:24.32 (3200). In XC he had a better 2013 (26th at state XC championship) than 2014. 5000 XC PR is 15:50.70.

Villanova women have added Canadian Nicole Hutchinson (Sentinel high school, British Columbia) to its 2015 incoming class. She was 2nd in the British Columbia prep high school XC championship last fall. She has a 4:28.31 PR over 1500 meters and a 4:51.99 mile PR (both from 2015 outdoor season). In 2014, she won British Columbia outdoor prep title over 3000 meters and was 3rd in the 1500. 2015 provincial meet is set for June 4. She was 3rd at the September 2014 Stanford XC Invitational, running a 5K XC PR of 17:36.

I wouldn't expect too much out of him. Those numbers are from 2013 as a sophomore. There's hope he may regain that form, but seems unlikely.

Excattyguy, thanks for the info on Winslow. Missed it on Run Nova. Yes, Winslow’s times are from his soph year, but it also says he is totally capable of running those times. And since it happened two years ago, it also suggests that either his training has been inadequate or he might have been injured. It is illogical to think he peaked as a soph. A more optimistic assessment would be Villanova might have lucked-out on a potentially outstanding prospect. Smart move by Marcus.

FYI -- Geordie Beamish (younger brother of ex-Villanova All American and 2013 New Zealand 5000 meter champion Hugo Beamish) will indeed come stateside for university -- but not to Villanova. He will compete for Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

His PRs are 3:49.35 (1500); 8:23.15 (3000); winner of several Kiwi Junior & Schools national titles (1500 twice, 3000 twice, XC, etc).

My sense is that neither Villanova nor Beamish-the-Younger were too terribly interested in each other.

Here's a link to a story about Beamish:

Sterling Pierce ....

What possessed the Pierce family to embrace Villanova? I am impressed. Did the father know Marcus and trusted him with his son.

This is quite a coup for the program. And at 6'3" 180, team nay also have the 400 man they have lacked ...?

Any other talent coming for next season?

From what I've read, Villanova offered Pierce a scholarship very early in the process and since he is still (surprisingly given his father) new to track, he signed. He then happened to go on to win at the Meet of Champions.

I think he's more of a short sprinter though.

Of note, Ville Lampinen ran an 800m PB today at the European Team Championships in Russia today. I assume he'll be running in the U23 Championships in Estonia in a few weeks.

Rumors of another quality 400/800 fellow from across the pond. Let's see if it happens.

TFE, thanks for the info. I agree that thus far he has been all about short sprints, but at that height, might he better at 400 - i.e., 200 / 400? Lots of guys with better 100 times.

What was Lampinen's time?

This is a bit premature, but LSU-Nit, over at Run Nova, there is a tweet from Drew Hunter about wearing a Nova singlet. How serious is this? A college recruiting advisor says never buy any paraphernalia from a university until you have decided to go there. Something to think about.

How good is this 400/800 guy? Another Slade (who hasn't learned how to run yet)?

Ha! I had the same first reaction (I'm RunNova, BTW) -- it turns out that Hunter's dad (and mom) are coaches for a running club in Loudon County in Northern Virginia and the "NOVA" singlet represents Northern Virgina, not Villanova. I tweeted that response to Drew's original tweet by way of seeing his reaction. He's obviously a major talent, with a year of high school still to go. In recruiting him, Villanova will be up against all the top-shelf programs. My sense right now is that University of Virginia may be leading. But, if he continues along his current trajectory, he'll have everyone lining up with offers.

On the 400/800 guy -- if this fellow shows up, he'd have had plenty of international racing experience and will be savvy on that front. Question is: will he actually show up? We should know pretty soon.

I believe phone calls are allowed starting today for the 2016 class. If I were getting after it I think I'd start with Sarah Walker (Germantown) and Danae Rivers (New Haven) two 2:05 800 girls.

There are several distance types I'd like to have for depth (from Pa) like Olivia Sargent and Kelsey Potts but as with some prospects I didn't even bother mentioning in the East, I think the ACC/Stanford will go after them hard. It's tough out there.
