Villanova recruiting trivia

I was searching for a couple old basketball magazines in the attic and found a Philadelphia Inquirer recruiting article that I clipped from the paper "a few years back":

Two things are required for a full and complete answer:
A. Which High School graduating class was Villanova recruiting?
B. Which 5 players eventually made up this recruiting class?

Here are the three players mentioned in the article:
1. 6-9 Townsend Harris (Palatka FL)
2. 6-8 Bryan Sallier (Port Arthur TX)
3. 6-9 Kevin Cooper (New Rochelle NY)

Given this info, please answer A) and B) above.

Derrick Snowden Hall of Fame Ceremony

Great night seeing Snow and 11 others inducted in the Baltimore Catholic League HOF. Awesome catching up to him. He seems like he is doing great He has a 6y.o.and just seems very happy. What a great guy as always!!!

Nice contingent off Villanova support (Coaches, former teammates, alums)

Phil Martelli was the MC and of course did a great job. Talked a lot about Nova. Of course I am naive enough to think he actually means it. Crazy huh?

Ochefu, Jenkins, Arch, and Lowe ...

... on the cover of Basketball Times holding a special piece of hardware.
Title is "Cool Cats"

Dick Vitale writes "Kris Jenkins will be a hero to Villanova fans forever. His game-winning jump shot at the buzzer was the greatest shot in the history of the NCAA Tournament".

Dick Weiss mentions Phil Martelli giving his Big 5 COY Trophy to Jay and seconded the notion on Jenkins' jumper saying "this was the most dramatic finish I can remember in my 44 years of covering the NCAA Tournament Championship game"

Mike Waters' article title is "In wake of ACC piracy, Big East still crowns a champ".

John Akers has the Top 5 teams for next season ranked as:
Duke
Kentucky
Villanova
Oregon
UNC / Kansas (tie)

also Xavier at 8 and Seton Hall at 22

Lines from Leigh Klein's article:
"The Wildcats' victory presented everything that's right in college hoops"

"Villanova played with a legitimate post player in Daniel Ochefu ... debunking a popular myth"

"Phil Booth showed that you don't have to be handed a starting role or the focus of the offense to contribute ... he didn't sulk, complain or transfer because he felt he was previously underutilized"

OT: The Running Man Challenge

My 17 year old daughter showed me a YouTube video clip last night called the Running Man Challenge. Apparently, 2 basketball players from the University of Maryland started this dance and it went viral in the NCAA and NBA basketball community.

Mikail Bridges and Kris Jenkins show up in the 4th video but, I can't figure out who the 3rd guy is dancing with them.

The video is really funny. Lots of college and NBA teams. The one with the UCONN girls dancing with their NCAA championship trophy in Geno Auriemmo's office is great.

I don't see where you can post a link in the new Rivals format so, I'll post it in the thread. Not sure if it's going to work but, here goes:

Booth - Jensen

I think McNick was the first one to make this comparison (in nostradamus fashion - prior to the tournament run):
"I explained to my Non-Nova fan friend how any people are concerned about Booth. He replied why isn't Jay recruited over Booth, maybe Jay is not worried about him, and maybe Donte as well.

I have the feeling and hope Booth will have a Harold Jensen moment and are worries are over.

1 McNick, Feb 28, 2016"

I thought I would compile this info for a comparison between Soph Phil Booth who had a lackluster regular season and stepped up to play a huge role in leading Villanova to a National Title in 2016 and Harold Jensen who had a lackluster regular season and stepped up to play a huge role in leading Villanova to a National Title in 1985.

NCAA Tournament Stats (6 Games):
Stat: Booth / Jensen
FG: 16-28 (.571) / 16-29 (.552)
FT: 8-9 (.889) / 9-12 (.750)
PPG: 7.8 / 6.8
RPG: 1.2 / 1.7
APG: 1.2 / 1.5
Points: 47 / 41

Both players had two games where they contributed very little offensively:

Booth's "quiet" games were both in the 2nd weekend of the tournament where he had 0 points against Kansas and only 2 against Miami.

Jensen was scoreless in the Sweet 16 game against Maryland after scoring only 3 in the win against Michigan to advance to the Sweet 16.

Both players had two double-figure scoring games:

Jensen scored 10 points on 5-7 shooting against UNC to help get Villanova to the Final Four and 14 points on 5-5 shooting against the Hoyas in the Title game.

Booth's double-figure games were against Oklahoma (10) in the National Semi-Final and his 20 point outburst against UNC in the Title game.

Both players shot 3-5 from the floor in the first round games - Jensen scoring 8 against Dayton and Booth contributing 7 against UNC-Asheville.

The similarities are amazing.

Wanamaker Award.......

Our National Champs have won the 2016 Wanamaker Award which goes to the team or athlete that reflects the most attention to the City of Philadelphia. Must have been an easy choice this year considering what the voters have to choose from. Last year the winner was the the Taney Dragons Little League baseball team.

Sorry This is Really OT

I need help for a Vietnam Vet. In the subdivision where I live there is a Vietnam vet with PTSD. His mother was taking care of him but she died a few weeks back and now he lives alone. I tried to be nice and talk to him whenever I saw him. Yesterday, he told me that the CIA had operatives in the subdivision who were looking for him so they could kill him. He also said his garage was full of explosives that he would detonate if they came near him. I called Wounded Warriors and they basically just brushed me off. I called the VA and just got another big run around. I know there are vets who post here. Can any of you give me a lead of who I can call to get this guy some help. I'm afraid he could hurt someone. I didn't want to call the police because I don't want to get him in trouble. Thanks in advance.

At Gonzaga this morning

My son and I went to our first Father-Son Mass and Breakfast at Gonzaga this morning. No, I did not stalk Chris Lykes or anyone else. It was a very nice event, all current students are invited, as are rising Freshman (my son). In all, about a thousand people attend. They give a few alumni awards and have a featured guest speaker. Nice way to spend the morning with your son.

DSH alluded to this in another thread, but you really can't undersell how Gonzaga is all about community and family and about supporting each other. They talk about brotherhood A LOT, but they really walk the walk in my experience. It sounds like schtick or a nice ideal from a mission statement, but the faculty and students are really bought into this. It's the thing that really made me want my son there. You can also see where coming out of that kind of environment, what Jay is selling at Villanova would be a natural fit.

So back to this morning. DSH mentioned it in the other thread, Gonzaga takes so much pride in the success of their students and alumni, it was a focus of the program. They talked about a lot of teams and championships, the school is very competitive athletically across most sports. But when they got to Kris Jenkins and Villanova, the program got interrupted with clapping and cheering. All the students at our table and around the room were nodding and clapping, that's our guy! Kris must have gotten mentioned 4 different times in the program and every time it was with Villanova mention as well. The 'Nova love is strong there. It was a very cool event all around. The Villanova and Kris Jenkins love was just the perfect icing!!

p.s. the "Congrats Kris!" with the big V on it banner is still hanging on the front of the school too!

Cruz Choosing Carly! Premature? Maybe! Shrewd? Yes

Everyone talks about Hillary's pro women stance but in reality polls show that she is really only popular among the 50+ y.o. women. Moreover, her pro abortion stances aren't a big draw among younger women either. Finally, if you want to play hard ball with Hillary, Carly is the right attack dog. It is much easier for a woman to attack her without being labeled a bully and generating sympathy for her than it is for a male to attack her on the same matters. Also, Carly should draw some women's votes to Cruz in the remaining primary and even among delegates at a contested convention.

Wait until Carly starts attacking Hillary for her responses to Bill's rape victims! Cruz couldn't do that anywhere near as effectively. Carly is a much better example of a women's success in the work place than Hillary is. Hillary got there on Bill's coat tails, and is still riding on them. That is why she has to put up with his infidelity and protect his reputation. Carly began as a secretary and worked her way up the ladder the right way.
