ACC Draw

In an amazing stroke of luck, all six of the ACC teams that made the round of 32 are playing upset winners:

Miami vs. 11 Wichita State
Duke vs. 12 Yale
North Carolina vs. 9 Providence
Notre Dame vs. 14 Stephen F. Austin
Virginia vs. 9 Butler
Syracuse vs. 15 Middle Tennessee State

I can't say enough how much I would love a Providence or Butler win today.

Some other conference notes

Through the first round, the Big 12 and Pac-12 are both winless against at-large opponents:

VCU over Oregon State
UConn over Colorado
Wichita State over Arizona
Providence over USC

Butler over Texas Tech
UNI over Texas

Also among those leagues:
SFA over WVU
Yale over Baylor
Hawaii over Cal

Two B1G teams were upset (MSU, Purdue) and the conference did not have any upsets itself

ACC is 6-1 with one upset (Syracuse) and has not been upset yet

A-10 is 2-1 with Dayton being upset and VCU upsetting Oregon State.

AAC is 1-2 with two losses by a combined 4 points. Unless UConn pulls the upset over Kansas, the AAC won't have anyone in the second weekend.

SEC is 2-0 since the First Four with two convincing wins.

Enough with the Big 12

This is two years in a row now. That's three Big 12 3 seeds who have lost in the first round in the last two dances. I'm sick of hearing that this is the best league in the country every year. Outside of Kansas, and Oklahoma this year only, these teams are no better than the teams below us in the Big East, like Xavier, Providence, SHU, Butler, etc. Everyone needs to stop drooling all over this league. There's a reason Kansas has won it 12 years in a row ...

Telling Day for Big East

Should be an interesting gauge on the Big East today:

Butler vs Texas Tech - we have heard so much about the Big 12 being the best conference this year. Here is a middle of the pack Big East team vs middle of the pack Big 12. Texas Tech is also really well coached by Tubby. May give us a sense of how the leagues stack up. I think TT takes it but Butler can certainly grind teams so they should keep themselves in the game.

Providence vs USC - many looking forward already to a UNC-Prov rematch from a couple of years ago. Friars have the talent but do they all show up ready to play today. I don't know a lot about USC but should be another test of Pac-12 vs Big East. I think Providence runs away in the 2nd half. Too much Dunn & Bentil.

Seton Hall vs Gonzaga - the Hall is everyone's darlings after that win on Saturday night and their run the last few weeks. I am on record on this board openly rooting for Gonzaga but this is a big one for the Big East. A loss by Seton Hall and the rumblings will be of the overrated Big East again. Gonzaga should have trouble keeping up with the athletic Pirates but I keep thinking about how Daniel would dominate in games against the Hall and I would worry about the Zags size. I think Seton Hall wins but this is a good one.

(side note: Nice win by Creighton in the NIT but those games are usually not a great measure because you never know who wants to play and who doesn't.)

One game samples are not a great measure of the power of an entire league but that's what ends up happening in the big dance. If the league goes 2-1 today (wins Hall & Prov) I think no real news. 3-0 or a loss by the Hall and the narrative starts to change.

Phil Booth

I'm probably in the minority here, but I feel like I see signs of a break-out. I like the way he's played the last few games. Like everyone else, I could do without the turnovers, but I like everything else.

On a related note, it is not fun to be Jalen Brunson after a mistake right now. He's on a short leash with Jay.

Lappas

Three times during the Purdue game he called Purdue's Rafael Davis.....Rafael Bigus!! When Purdue was up three late, it never crossed his mind that they ought to foul (they didn't, Ark hit a three and ultimately Purdue lost)

It seemed that every game that was tight, he was on. I can't take him!

Go Irish....

I can't stand either team but the ND-Michigan game could have a real crowd effect on our game Sunday....

Michigan fans will probably root for fellow B1G Iowa while the majority of the ND fans (Metro NYC Irish Catholics) will probably root for Villanova....this game could determine whether we have a someone neutral crowd on Sunday or a very favorable one...
