Interesting read in today's Inquirer regarding the Conference Tournament issue-----with teams like Holy Cross and Austin Peay (with horrible records) getting the automatic bid by winning their conference tournament. In those smaller one bid conferences, it sometimes unfairly makes the regular season virtually irrelevant, no matter how well you perform or dominate the league during the season. Those teams that are clearly the best in their conferences are then relegated to the NIT if they have a bad game in their tournament, or when a poor team gets hot and wins a few games, which has already happened twice this week!! He feels there needs to be some changes to the current system, and he gave his thoughts and ideas as to what he'd like to see in that regard-----most of which I agree with.
As he said in his article, we all like to see the upsets and the little guy overachieving and knocking off the champ, especially in the Dance-----its all part of the fun and excitement. But in some ways I also think its unfair in the current conference playoff format---------and I agree with Brookover that some changes to the current system should be proposed and considered, not only for the smaller conferences but for the larger ones as well.
Not sure how to post the link but hopefully someone can do it.
