Murder in the 4-0

The CoDB Times released the first piece yesterday in a series that just started examining every single killing this year in some crummy police precinct in the Bronx, the 40th precinct. Apparently murder rates are so historically low that it's actually possible to do this now.

It wasn't "Making a Murderer" in depth, but it's pretty cool that every killing there all year is going to get some sort of publicity besides the usual "person got killed in the Bronx today" one-liner on the nightly news.

The first one seems to focus on the fact that the guy who machete'd this poor woman to death was obviously mentally ill and the state/city/system had no real way to do anything about it even though there were violent warning signs.

CatinBrielle is a long-time subscriber to VUSports and he went WAY ABOVE AND BEYOND to have his design folks put together the shirts you see above. I just got them via two-day delivery and will have them available tomorrow at VUSports Pre-Game Luncheon XV !!!!! (Note: By available - I mean - Free - one per luncheon attendee - while sizes last) The quality and look of these shirts is fabulous - if you need some logo shirts - CatinBrielle is the man to call.

He can't make the event but next time anyone sees him - buy him a beverage of his choice - or maybe a steak dinner!

Walk-on From Salesianum

Hayden Sernyak 6-4, 210, has committed to play football at Nova. He is projected as a tight end.
Bill DiNardo, head coach at Salesianum was quoted in Wilmington News Journal, "I think he's at the tip of the iceberg right now. He's a big kid, and the growth he has shown in the past year has been unbelievable. If he keeps working, I think he's someone who can contribute at the college level." Nova had a very tough RB ,Dick Sernyak in mid 60's. He lives in Wilmington. Came to Nova from Bonner. I wonder if these two Sernyak's are related?

"Don't Make Up Crap" -- Ole Roy Channels Fans About Gottlieb

Roy Williams laid into Doug Gottlieb after UNC blew Miami off the court, 96-71, earlier this afternoon. Jordan Greer's story, over at Sporting News:

http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball-news/4695624-roy-williams-doug-gottlieb-north-carolina-retirement-rumors?eadid=SOC%2FTwi%2FSNMain

reported that Gottlieb "reported" that Williams would retire at the end of the season with longtime assistant Hubert Davis moving up to succeed him. Williams reportedly even recounted the incident in 1999 when Gottlieb played with his shorts on backwards during the post game press conference. Williams' level of vitriol has me wondering if maybe the academic scandal finally caught up to ole Roy.

butler presser quotes

Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright Opening Statement
"That was a typical Villanova/Butler game. They are always a tough matchup for us. Certain styles of play and certain teams matchup well, and they do with us. They're really good. They're definitely an NCAA Tournament team. I know they have to take care of business. When I think about teams that we've played against that are going to the NCAA Tournament, I think about them. They're as good as anybody. Not pretty, but if you're looking for pretty you're not going to beat Butler. We'll take it and move on."

Wright on the team's slow start to the second half
"It was a combination. We came out a little sluggish. We weren't aggressive defensively. It only takes a little bit against (Butler). They had us stagnant offensively. We got into a little one-on-one. Not selfish one-on-one but they didn't help and backed off.

Wright on trailing in the second half at home
"When we're on the road and we're down there is no panic but when we're at home you just sense a little tightness, like everybody is dissappointed. We've got to learn to not let that effect us. We were doing the right things we were just missing shots and they were playing well. They're a good team. We'll learn from that."

"We've got five great seniors. Pat, Henry and Kevin take care of the bench. Daniel and Arch take care of what's going on on the floor, by making sure we're doing what we're supposed to do. We're very fortunate in that way."

Ryan Arcidiacono on regaining momentum in the second half"(Kelan) Martin came out aggressive. We got back to the scouting report and doing what we were doing in the first half which got us the lead. We made a couple of scrappy plays, getting on losse balls and getting a couple steals to get some easy buckets then Josh and Kris were able to knock down some open threes."

Arcidiacono on his senior night feelings"It was special. It's something I'll never forget. I know it was special for my family and the families of the other seniors, not just the players but the managers and the office assistants. It's great to be able to play in front of a great crowd but to play in front of the senior class, and knowing that they were their very early for the pregame reception, it was special. It's a day that I'll cherish and I was glad we were able to come out with a win."

Josh Hart on what he did differently offensively from the last two games
"I talked to coach and he talked to me about valuing myself as more than just scoring the basketball. It's about making hustle plays, rebounding, defending, all of those little things. When you do all of those things, offense comes. Everyone has the opprutunity to make plays and to make shots."

Hart on Villanova's upcoming game against Xavier
"That's going to be a battle. Last couple of years it's been tough going down there. Next couple of days we're going to get ready for it and remain focused. Whatever the result is we're going to look each other in the eye and know that we played Villanova basketball."
