PROVIDENCE
Kenpom #46 (#133 Offense / #17 Defense)
16-3
Big Wins: #14 Arizona (Neutral), @ #34 Butler, @ #36 Creighton, #34 Butler
Losses: #16 Michigan State (Neutral), #112 Marquette, #43 Seton Hall
PROVIDENCE OFFENSE
Shot Distribution: 38% Rim /28 % Mid-Range / 33% 3pt
The Good
- Getting to the rim at a high rate and converting at a solid 63% clip
- Low turnover rate (#29)
- Solid offensive rebounding (#96)
The Bad
- Poor mid-range team, making only 31%
- Poor from 3pt range as well at 31% (#306)
- Not getting to the line as much as one would think (#209)
PROVIDENCE DEFENSE
Shot Distribution: 35% Rim / 31% Mid-Range / 33% 3pt
The Good
- Excellent defensive team (#18)
- Defending the arc well, holding opponents to 32% (#52) Opponents shoot a roughly average number of threes against Providence.
- Very low free throw rate (#30)
- Force opponents to get most of their points on 2pt shots.
- Solid defensive rebounding (#121)
- Force plenty of turnovers (#42), get blocks (#104), and steals (#82)
The Bad
- Not much, they have an average 2pt defense, opponents make 48% (#158) but if there is one place to be average this is it.
THE STARS
KRIS DUNN (6-4) Junior
Shot Distribution: 43% Rim / 32% Mid-Range / 24% 3pt
Shooting: 68% FT / 63% Rim / 35% Mid-Range / 37% 3pt
It takes a lot of bullet points to explain how good Kris Dunn is.
- 17th highest usage in the country
- #1 in assist rate
- #465 in blocks (excellent for a PG)
- #6 in steals
- Defensive rebounds very well for a guard (#429 among all players), which is only a little behind Josh Hart.
- Draws fouls and shooting fouls at a high rate
- Just deadly at the rim due to his high shooting percentage and ability to draw fouls.
- Shot chart is interesting, the vast majority of his shots come in the middle third of the court and he shoots dramatically better on the left side (61% eFG Left of the Key vs 29% eFG% Right). Funny thing is, this doesn’t appear to be a small sample size issue, he had the same tendencies but a little less dramatic last year.
- Heating up during conference play… shooting 45% from three in conference and on higher volume.
BEN BENTIL (6-9) Soph
Shot Distribution: 38% Rim / 28% Mid-Range / 33% 3pt
Shooting: 82% FT / 65% Rim / 33% Mid-Range / 25% 3pt
- Robin to Dunn’s Batman? Or maybe just another Batman.
- Gets to the bucket at a high rate, converts at the rim at a high rate, and if you foul him on his way to the hoop… well he is an excellent Foul Shooter (82%) as well.
- Getting to the free throw line at the 2nd highest rate in the Big East. He has taken at least 10 foul shots in three of the last four games.
- Struggling from the 3pt line, shooting only 26% but still taking the 2nd most on the team.
- Likes to shoot from the baseline.
- Good rebounder, especially on the offensive side (#278)
- Bentil is playing huge minutes (2nd most in the conference), he has played 82% of minutes so far this year.
- You want to make Bentil a jump shooter, he only converts 29% on everything away from the rim.
RODNEY BULLOCK (6-8) Soph
Shot Distribution: 47% Rim / 28% Mid-Range / 25% 3pt
- Remember this guy? Well if you do it’s probably for the wrong reasons. He sat out all of the 2013-2014 season amid a sexual assault investigation. No charges ended up being filed. He then missed 2014-2015 with a torn ACL.
- He is finally out on the court – a lot. Much like Bentil he is also playing huge minutes (80%).
- Anchoring things down low, good rebounder (Offensive #491 / Defensive #475)
- Great at the Rim (66%), but terrible Mid-Range (24%), and the big man is surprisingly solid from Three (33%). Need to caveat that his 3pt shooting is highly skewed by a 6-9 performance against Butler, he is 2-12 since.
Dunn, Bentil & Bullock are all playing huge minutes for Cooley for a reason. The remaining guards and wings are a bit of a step down, tend to play
very inconsistent. Providence only gets 28% of total mintues from their bench, only 48 teams get fewer. Providence has dropped games to Marquette and Seton Hall because they don’t punish you for putting bringing help to guard Dunn & Bentil. In the Marquette game Dunn & Bentil put up 48 points… the rest of the team only 16.
JUNIOR LOMOMBA (6-5) Junior
Shot Distribution: 39% Rim / 37% Mid-Range / 24% 3pt
- Junior is a shooting guard that can’t shoot. He is shooting a career best 33% from three but on low volume. His 29% from Mid-Range is more indicative.
- But he can slash to hoop, and gets fouled at a high rate.
JALEN LINDSEY (6-7) Soph
Shot Distribution: 19% Rim / 9% Mid-Range / 72% 3pt
- All. Behind. The. Line.
- Which is a problem when you are taking the most 3pt attempts on the team and only hitting 26%.
KYRON CARTWRIGHT (6-0) Soph
Shot Distribution: 35% Rim / 45% Mid-Range / 18% 3pt
- Backs up Dunn at the PG and plays the majority of his minutes off ball with Dunn.
- Low usage player that can hit open shots. Boom or bust season so far, in conference he has had 3 games of 0-2 points and 3 games with 10-13 points.
AROUND COLLEGE BB
- I can’t help but wonder if Maryland is going to hit a wall in the 2nd half of the season. Trimble and Sulaimon are asked to not only play huge minutes but to take so much of the load offensively and defensively. In close games those two just can’t go out. Against Northwestern both looked gassed, and went a combined 1-8 from three.
- Ben Simmons is a very interesting player. Shooting only 30% in the Mid-Range, but an amazing 73% at the rim. He is sitting at #7 in the KPOY standings essentially on his dunking ability.
Stay safe out there Cats fans!
