Jay Wright Opening Statement:
“Good, hard fought win tonight. The BIG EAST is the BIG EAST. The first game against Xavier when their kid got hurt blew people’s minds. Every game since has been a physical, grind it out battle. I’m proud of our guys for fighting through it. We’re not playing great, but we’re playing tough and playing together. I’m proud of them.”
Jay Wright on 20-game BIG EAST winning streak:
“It’s one game at a time. What is happening is teams are getting really fired up to play against us. Marquette brought it. They were not going to go away. We jumped out on them early, and they kept coming and coming. Teams have been coming here and giving us their best. I think our guys realize that. They are responding but I still think we have a lot to learn.”
Wright on finishing a game like this:
“It’s hard especially for our young guys like Jalen and Kris as a first time starter. They’re getting good at it. It’s hard. Good teams are not going to quit. They have beaten a lot of good teams. It’s very difficult.” “I think they are a really well-rounded team. They got an inside and outside game. They drive it. They have Ellenson and an isolation guy. We’re kind of the same. I thought we put together a couple of good possessions where we went inside to Kris Jenkins and he got us going. We got the stops defensively with our bigger lineup. I thought Reynolds was great. We got to play with a lead.”
Wright on production from the bench:
“It was big time. Darryl Reynolds played big time minutes and he was great. Mikal Bridges just keeps getting better and better off the bench. The guys off the bench bring energy defensively and on the offensive glass. It’s really big. We need it. You don’t need a lot of depth but you need good depth. We’re starting to get that.”
Kris Jenkins on his confidence shooting tonight:
“My teammates do a good job of creating offense. I was just trying to make the right plays at the right time. I was trying to be aggressive.”
Jenkins on having a target on their back:
“It’s been like that since my freshman year. I don’t think it’s going to lay up even when I leave. Every game is a grind. You need to bring it. We had a little lapse and they took the lead. We can’t let that happen. We just need to get better.”
Jalen Brunson on going against Henry Ellenson and getting a win:
“It was satisfying getting a win. I know as a team we are still not satisfied. We just need to work hard and keep getting better every day.”
Brunson on his biggest adjustment he has faced thus far:
“The biggest adjustment I have faced is playing with a lot of great players. I have a lot of great teammates who do a lot. They are all basketball players. Learning to play with them and to play as hard as I can is the most difficult.”
