Defense

Is it just me or have we been a lot more selective in double teaming in the last two games? I thought we did ourselves a disservice against a lot of teams and the good ones (Oklahoma and Virginia) were able to exploit it with repeated wide open shots.

I think we ended up scrambling around and losing players every time we double and even triple teamed throughout the year. Even the full court press seems more relaxed.

Chef is cookin' up a storm

Our guys are making the right extra passes to feed DO in ideal spots, and Blue Jays haven't been able to counter him at all. Great pick n' roll play. This is the type of performance we need from our big man the remainder of the season. Love the fact that he's a willing passer, but we need him to get more selfish, as the season moves along. So hopefully tonight's start can be a confidence booster for him. The best big of Jay Wright's illustrious career. The best is yet to come. Enjoy Chef while you can.

Props to JW

Jay said earlier that this team was a work in progress .....and progress is whats being achieved!!!! Congrats to the entire coaching staff.....Don't expect this kind of performance every game (bs of course I do) but this team comes to play and they have the players to achieve.

Also great coaching job the last two games by Jay ...basically having an answer for every thing the opposition threw at us!!!!!

Keep working on the zones...it's going to make a difference!

Ben Bentil

I posted about him a few weeks ago, about how impressed I was with him and remembered that his name was mentioned in our recruiting him a few years ago. I was surprised that some people were pissy with me for bringing him up. I said it then and I will say it again, I'm not talking about him because I have an agenda or ax to grind. I said he looked like an NBA player and some people mocked me. Of course playing with an AA in Dunn helps, but he is averaging 18.8 pts, 7.8 rebs and shooting 48.5%. I never see these kids in high school and appreciate the members who do and report it on the board. Has he improved that much in the past 3 years? Also I asked before but I don't think it was answered, did he want us and we weren't interested? I thought I read he really liked us but we weren't as much in him. The staff does a phenomenal job, this is not a Monday morning QB post, I never saw him before last year. I liked him then and I said a few weeks ago he looked to me like a future pro sooner than later.

The start of the game (plus other observations)

Playing at Creighton is intense...their crowd is amazing and they really get up when Nova comes to town. With all that as a preface, that first 6-8 minutes was an amazing display of maturity and poise in a very hostile, very fast-paced start to the game. Creighton was playing up on our guys, so we took it inside time after time after time. Outside shots weren't falling, and thank God Creighton couldn't make an outside shot either. That start could have been ugly but our guys really fought hard.

Ochefu and Hart were unreal in the first half. As BEEF said in another thread, that was both players' NBA mix tape. Slap a label on it and mail it in.

Without Brunson in the second half drilling 3's, finding Ochefu and juking 4 Creighton players on the way to a smooth layup, the game could have gotten real close real quick.

I am EXTREMELY happy to escape that arena with a win. Jay and Co. did an amazing job working around that insane foul situation in the first half and Creighton started to really get on their game in the second half but we kept punching right back.

This team is legit!

Two Villanovans Had Their High School Records Surpassed

Current Nova star Jarrett McClenton held the single season mark for rushing TDs at 37. He also was a co-holder of total TDs at 42. Mike Waters from Imhotep Charter broke both records this past season.
Former VU great QB Brett Gordon while at LaSalle High set PCL passing touchdowns record at 33. Tony
Russo, from Mc Clenton's alma mater Archbishop Wood got 34 this past season. Russo, 6-4,225 is headed to Rutgers.

Booth? Soph slump?

he looks 0.5 step slower and his rise on his jumper doesn't seem as high. Did he put on weight (muscle or fat)?

Is he just having a tad of trouble adjusting to this rotation? Pre season I figured this system would be built for him. Plenty of oppty for him to create his shots or embrace the "take em" approach a few times per game.

I'm not bagging on him. I just figured his stats would be a bit better, especially during non conf play.

Creighton is ranked #64 in kenpom and projected to finish 9-9 in BE league play. That is why there is a 25% chance 'Nova gets knocked off tonight per his model. Creighton's defense has been average this year and their offense has been very good. They get good shots and convert them. They have not been a good FT shooting team.
