Early Thoughts on Sixers Draft

Realizing that its VERY early in the evaluation process, and assumming that the Sixers end up with a Top 3 pick, which I think is quite realistic----which player or which direction would you go with their pick?
For me personally, I think if they have an opportunity to draft Ben Simmons, thats the way I would go. I think with his ball skills he can easily play the 3, which is a real need---but can also play the 4 if needed. If they are not in a position to draft Simmons, I think I would look to move down a few spots and draft either Jamal Murray or Kris Dunn, who I believe are the best available point guards, a spot they desperately need to fill for the long term. They should end up with 3 or 4 first round picks, maybe even more if they do drop down, and another kid I would target, perhaps with that second first round pick is PG/SG Malik Newman, a kid I saw as a frosh and really loved------I think he has the long-term potential to possibly be even better than Murray or Dunn.
I've only seen some clips of Murray and need to see a little more but based on what I've heard and read, I think he's the real deal with immense upside. I also think Dunn is terrific and plays hard and tough every minute he's on the court, and and I think staying for another year will be very beneficial in fine tuning his already strong skillset for the next level------and like Murray he also appears to be a Top 10 pick at this point.
With Noel and Okafor developing nicely so far at the 4 and 5, with Saric saying this week that he's definitely coming over to play for the Sixers next year, and with Embid possibly and "hopefully" playing next year, I think the front court is really in excellent shape for the future.
So with that said, point guard is really my first priority, but as I said it would be almost impossible for me to pass on a talent like Simmons, and if he's available, I think they take him. Simmons and Newman would sure look good to me and if that were to somehow happen, and I do think that's possible with the Lakers pick (top 3 protected) in their pocket, I think the Sixers rebuilding process becomes greatly accelerated and the foundation for future championship contention would be firmly in place, with or without Embid.

Literally....

Gotta be the most overused word in people's day to day vernacular. Jesus Christ...can anyone describe anything anymore without including a "....literally!...."

No, you didn't just literally fall out of your chair laughing.

You could remove the word from your sentence and 99.99% of the time your anecdote wouldn't suffer.

Joe Lunardi to the rescue!

Yes, you read that correctly. Joey Brackets with some encouraging words for the Villanova faithful. Insider article with a lot more information on his recent bracket, so I'll only post what he said about Nova:

"Being a Philly guy, you can imagine I hear a fair amount of Villanova chatter in the offseason. That's likely to increase with this bracket, considering the Wildcats once again appear poised for an incredibly attractive NCAA tournament seed. According to conventional wisdom, "Villanova always chokes in the tournament," so how could I possibly keep projecting this kind of seeding for the Wildcats?

For one thing, it's worth noting said wisdom isn't particularly "conventional" or "wise." For another, it's not supported by any reasonable application of the facts.

One of my favorite tools for such things is the simple Seed Score metric. We know from the NCAA seeding process how many games teams are "supposed" to play in the eyes of the committee. And we know from year-to-year results how far teams actually advance in the tourney.

In Villanova's case, Jay Wright has taken 10 teams to the NCAA tournament since arriving for the 2001-02 season. In that time, the Wildcats have been seeded to play 27 NCAA games. Their actual record is 14-10 (in 24 games).

In other words, Villanova has reached 24 of the 27 NCAA tournament games it was supposed to play under Wright. This is a Seed Score of 89 percent, a solid A-minus in my book. So, while Villanova fans may not like their tourney results of the past season or two, they've had it awfully good for a very long time. And it's going to happen again, with what the odds suggest will be a much better ending.

And that's coming from a St. Joe's guy, too."

DirtyD / ADP - Thoughts on NY AG's Cease and Desist to FanDuel / Draft Kings?

As a non-player of daily fantasy sports (and non-sports gambler in general), what are your thoughts on Schneiderman's latest move? Personally, I think he is a just another politician focused on things that will get the most traffic, but wonder if this is the beginning of the end for these sites until new legislation has been brought up.

Also, lots of articles in the NYT about off-shore gaming more broadly. Fun reads.

Never Look Back

I have had a tumultuous past 4-5 years in my life.

The biggest takeaways from my experiences:
  • Negativity (in any form) is a soul-sapping waste of energy
  • Focusing on the past is the evil bastard stepchild of negativity

However, I get that people want to make sense of something that is hard to swallow. So let's dispense with this. It is pretty simple.
  • 85% of 1 seeds make the Sweet 16
  • 70% of 2 seeds make the Sweet 16
Hence, it could hardly be argued that these were successful NCAA tournament appearances.

What does it mean for the entire seasons? Love someone's analogy of a college class -- we took an A or an A+ into our last 2 final exams and bombed them. Since the final exam is the biggest part of any grade, we get a C+ or a B-for the past 2 courses.

All that being said, WHO CARES NOW? It is what it is and cannot be changed.

Never look back -- only forward -- and keep it positive.

New season, great program, stellar coach, scintillating vibe........a lot to look forward to.

(Note: If you are incapable of looking forward and have a pathological need to rehash the past, at least go back to 2009)
