2 year anniversary

of the healthcare law passing. So, did you guys all see the events the President held to celebrate this landmark occasion? He's heading into his re-elect and given this was supposed to insure everyone, lower the deficit, lower premiums and solve healthcare in this country you'd think he would do something to remind voters of the law. Oh wait, everyone hates it, no one has been given insurance, prices have gone up and employers are starting the process of dropping coverage. Oh yea, and the public still hates it.

Big East Meet

Interesting that Reid is not running this w/e at Big East meet. She didn't look like she got hurt last w/e, so I gotta believe that it is just a way to avoid her overracing in the spring to give her the best chance to make Canadian Oly team this summer. In the big pix, if true, smart move by Gina and Reid. Too many quality college runners are toast by the end of a long outdoor season.

GSA

Interested to hear the thoughts on this. Having worked in government, nothing shocks me but this is pretty close. To then have these video's up on YOUTUBE for the world to see....wow. Right around the time that everyone writes their tax checks. Brilliant.

Impressions from the Penn Relays

One of the more exciting moments was the finish of the Girls’ 4x100 when the anchor from Long Beach Poly took the stick in about fourth and ran down three teams from Jamaica. Impressive.

Forget all of this excitement about the Women’s DMR. That was a gift from Oregon and Lananna. Oregon is like a major league club and VU is a minor league (AAA at best). Oregon women dominated the field without Jordan Hasay. Think about that one for a moment. Have no idea why Oregon did not enter the Womens’ DR. They probably would have won. Met a couple of the young women (Anne Kesselring) from Oregon outside the stadium, Saturday, after the races. Really nice people.

Lipari came up small in the women’s 4x1500. She had very little and was running all over the track. Race was lost on the second leg. Mimic is so-so. Expected more.

Akande is a real surprise. Congratulations to the VU staff for “discovering” her.

McEntee did not bring his “A” game in the DMR. He was in a position to do something. Did not run an intelligent race and had little at the end.

Princeton won the DMR and the 4 x Mile without their best team. Peter Callahan was not there. Think about this for a moment or two. Plus it does not bode well for recruiting. If you are kid from the East ? think Ben Malone or Ed Cheserek or … - and you are a very good student and you are an outstanding runner, where do you go? Villanova? Forget it. They have a better team at Princeton and better middle distance relays at Columbia and Cornell. And if you are not a great student, you go to Penn State. So why go to Villanova?

Alex Reber (Cherry Hill East)? Big and strong, but is not the answer at 400. Running style is lumbering and need smoothing out, but may just not have enough speed.

Those "boys" from Jamaica are grown men. Just look at them physically. Explains some of the exceptional times.

The men and women need to recruit a whole lot better. No speed. Men are hurting at 400. Brian Murphy should not have been in that race (DMR). Not ready for prime time.

Most exciting VU race for Friday and Saturday was Men’s 4x800. Problem was McEntee and Tetreault ran as well as they could, but they are not 800 men. Fitzsimons ran hard, but he is not yet in shape (ran better in HS). Ellison just is not strong enough yet. Still like him a lot. VU needs 400 and 800 men with talent desperately. And another stud miler. Denault is not the answer. Lacks speed. In other words, the men need an awful lot.

Ben Malone did not win, but is very good.

Warnick is a smooth runner, but is not a 3000 man.

Piccirillo beat Ajee Wilson, but not Mary Cain. Nothing wrong in that. Cain is exceptional. Be nice if VU could get Cain (she is a soph), but I dooubt it. Bronxville produces good students. She will probably go to Princeton or Harvard.

My take away from this weekend is that VU is close to becoming irrelevant in track & field. That is unfortunate and also sad, but ...

Reid, Mimic, and Lipari...

Big weekend for them out in Cali. All ran PR's (Lipari in 1500 and Reid/Mimic in 5K. Reid ran a blazing 15:23.64, PR by 14 sec and broke Sonia O'Sullivan's 20 yr. old school mark. O'Sullivan was at Nova same time as me - 20 yr. old record which only means 1 thing - I am getting WAY too old!!!

Mimic ran 15:44 and Lipari ran 4:17.17 in the 1500. Great times by all 3, Reid's met the Olympic B standard.

Callie Hogan

I notice that Callie Hogan of Villanova is entered in the 1500 and 5000 at Larry Ellis meet, this weekend. Didn't realize she had some eligibility remaining. She never seemed to recover from whatever kept her out of action for a couple of seasons. If she has returned to the promise she showed as a frosh and soph, there is the fourth for the 4x1500 at Penn.

For the ultra conservatives, let me ask...

As you all should know, debt to gdp increased under Reagan from 30% to 60%. That is double for you non math guys. The trend continued under Bush Sr. although not quite at the same clip but still pretty strong. Trend actually dropped a bit under Clinton but he certainly benefitted from the tech boom and also Bush's tax increases (yes tax increases and smart ones). Than 8 years of W, and the debt and budgets continued to zoom. why did the conservatives/ tea baggers decide to protest outrageous debt and blame it all on Obama literally in Februay of 09. Where were they the previous 19 years? Serious question.

Oh and Ronnie increased taxes 4 times during his presidency.

Eamonn Coughlan

Who is he? Rumor has it that he is a revered runner from Villanova’s glorious past. He is bringing a DMR from Dublin City University (DCU) to Millrose Games and may have been instrumental in steering Mark English away from VU and to DCU … On the other hand, may be he is aiding VU by showing the Irish lad what US running is really all about and why one should think about running at VU. You don’t want to end up like Mageean who took the money and ran - only not very well …

Got tired of typing. Maybe the Villanova site will post more detail. Not holding out much hpoe there as it has not even posted outdoor rosters yet. Hoping villanovarunning will come through as usual.

Qeustions

At the Danny Curran Invitational, this past weekend, Alison Smith was listed as running for Villanova. She finished third in the 1500 behind Lipari and Mimic and ahead of Ajee Wilson and Courtney Chapman. Is that a mistake or does she still have eligibility? She is not listed on the roster.

MimIc is listed as junior for eligibiilty on the roster. Does she still have another year of eligibility after this one?

New England Indoor Mile Champ Commits to Villanova

As the article below details, Marcus O'Sullivan garnered another recruit over the weekend, as Fairfield, CT's Harry Warnick committed to run for the Wildcats. Warnick finished a solid 13th last November at the Foot Locker Northeast cross country regional, running 16:20.40 over the 5K course. Last month in Boston, Warnick won the New England indoor championship in the mile, in 4:20.22. He doubled back in the same meet to finish 8th in the two mile, in 9:33.31.

Fairfield Warde Track Star Commits to Villanova

Tom Renner, The Daily Fairfield
April 1, 2012

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? The mile is the favorite event of Fairfield Warde senior Harry Warnick. Next year, he’ll be running for a college program at Villanova University that has a pedigree second-to-none in developing runners for that particular distance.

Warnick committed over the weekend to attend Villanova University. The Philadelphia-based school is coached Marcus O’Sullivan, a former star at the school who is one of three runners to run more than 100 sub four minute miles.

“The mile is my favorite event, so to go to a school that has such a great history in that race is great,’’ Warnick said. “I’m hoping I can run some great races for him.”

O’Sullivan is one of many great milers to compete for Villanova, including Eamonn Coghlan, Marty Liquori and Dick Buerkle. Outstanding women distance runners Jen Rhines and Sonia O’Sullivan also ran for the Wildcats.

Warnick was interested in Villanova for a while, but the school became the front-runner when it raised its financial aid package. Wake Forest, Boston College and American University also had offers on the table. None of them, however, come close to matching the running pedigree of the Wildcats, who have won the Big East outdoor championship the past two years.

“Marcus is a great coach and it’s a prestigious running program,’’ Warnick said. “That was a big swing on their side. And they have a strong business program, which was another factor. All of them played a role in my decision.”

Warnick jumped on the radar of a lot college coaches with a breakout junior season in cross country and track. He cemented that interest this year, when he finished second in the State Open in cross country. He took third in the State Open in the 1600 meters in February, but came back to win the New England championship in the mile in early March.

Matt Kane, another former Fairfield Warde runner, is a junior at Villanova. The Wildcats also have a strong history of success in the Penn Relays, one of the most prestigious outdoor meets in the world. Warnick will run at the Penn Relays later this month in the high school division to get a taste of the event firsthand.

“Matt has been a good runner for them and they knew I was still interested in going there,” Warnick said. “I’m glad we were able to work it out.”

Harry’s siblings Sam and Sophie are also seniors at Warde. Sam will attend the College of College of Charleston, while Sophie has narrowed her list to two schools.
