Getting Robbed

Looks like the government finally beats the private sector at something... its just so happens to be taking citizens' stuff.

Now if you read more closely and add in stealing that goes on beyond straight burglary, the crooks still come out on top, but this is only at the federal level. If you included state level data the numbers would be even more eye opening... there are counties in some states (e.g., Texas) that fund themselves on this practice. Driving on certain roads is akin to running a container ship through somali waters except these pirates have badges.

I know many will drop the, "don't do anything wrong and you won't have to deal with this," refrain which is very popular for every government infringement on our rights outside of gun ownership, but plenty of actual stories prove otherwise. Restaurant owners with cash for equipment getting robbed on suspicion of it being drug money, musicians leaving gigs with cash in hand and on and on and on. Both liberals and conservatives seem to be slamming the egregious ways civil asset forfeiture is being used more and more.

Of course, when a few banks get caught enabling drug cartel money laundering on a grand scale we don't seize any of their assets.. just people who won't cause a stink.

Golden State

I am groggy at work today after staying up to watch that game last night - but it was totally worth it. I don't care what anyone says - high level NBA games are absolutely the best sport to watch. Last night was amazing - Chris Paul had a monster game, didn't miss a shot in the 1st Q. Curry and Green were both in early foul trouble with an already short bench. Clippers up 23 at one point, up 10 late in the 4th....and they still lose. Steph Curry is amazing. Is there anyone else in all of sports that is more worth the price of admission than him? Can they match or beat the Bulls 72 win season?

Looking ahead to Akron

Akron is the toughest team we will have faced all season, and they will be the best team we face prior to Oklahoma (though the neutral-court games in Brooklyn may be a bigger test).

They just beat Arkansas on the road, so they won't be scared of going on the road against a good team, though we are worlds better than Arkansas.

This should be a team we can force a lot of turnovers against. The one scary part about Akron is they usually take a lot of threes, so they have a chance to get hot and knock down a bunch.

They also are a big team. Out of the 6 guys who have played the most minutes against D-I teams this season, 3 are 6'10" or taller and 5 are 6'6" or taller.

Villanova is so good that we should still roll them by double digits. But Akron is no pushover, and they could easily be a tournament team.

From those of us who kept the faith...

From those of us who kept the faith,
to those of you who fought his best against the beast,
a mere shotput throw from yet another improbable victory,
you have forever gained our love, our respect and our admiration.

You came to us, we old yet proud,
you never asked us why or how
you bow'ed your neck against the storm
You few, you Blue and White adorned

The fates were cruel, as is their wont
but know ye this, on other days, on other fields
the courage and mettle shown THIS day on THIS field
will bear you high above another beast, more terrible perhaps,
and no less mocking

And the fire that burns within your breast tonight
can never be extinguished.
For lessons learned on these strife-sown fields
shall serve you well on your journey.
Godspeed.

Early kenpom stats

*Note: please temper this discussion with a) only three games in and b) the comp hasn't been all that great yet.

Villanova is ranked #2 in kenpom behind only Kentucky

from a "Four Factors" perspective, the two primary weaknesses of the team so far are:
a) not getting to the FT line much (is that in part because we are so good at getting open looks for teammates by sharing the ball so well?)
b) Defensive rebounding

As a team the Cats are 5th in the country in 2PFG% at 65.3% … interesting given there is only one big man engaged in the flow of the offense.

some of the player specific stats:
Best offensive rating on the team is Arch - 149.9 (54th in the country) - Jalen Brunson is 2nd on the team at 142.8 then Ochefu is at 136.0.

prior to the season, Coach Wright talked about running the offense more through Daniel Ochefu - through three games he is the lone Wildcat being used on 24-28% of possessions - perhaps in part due to his being 5th in the nation in Offensive rebounding %?

Despite being off to a slow start shooting from beyond the 3pt arc, Booth has maintained an O rating of 122 (compared to 128.1 last year) while increasing his % of possessions used from 17.8 to 21.7. In other words - he remains at high efficiency while being used more in the offense.

Hart has picked up offensively right where he left off. His O boarding is down but he is contributing more on the defensive glass and being more aggressive stealing the ball on defense.

Jenkins - usage up - O Rtg up - rebounding up.

Reynolds is doing the two things he is primarily asked to do - quite well. His block % and defense rebounding percentage place him in the 300s nationally.
