MLB - 25 years

Conducted a little research. My suspicions were pretty much confirmed. Only a few teams have considerable success over the last 25 years.

I looked at years in the playoffs, years not in playoffs but .500 or above, years below .500, division crowns. WS appearances, and titles.

Double-digit playoff appearances:
ATL (18)
NYY (17)
STL (12)
BOS (11)
OAK (10)

18 of 30 teams fall between making the playoffs 4 and 8 times over the last 25 years. Another 7 teams made it between 1 and 3 times.

Double-digit division winners:
ATL (16)
NYY (13)
STL (10)

16 of 30 teams have won their division between 3 and 6 times. Eight teams are between 0 and 2 times. Another three teams at 7 and 8 times.

In '94 (season cut short by strike) there were no division winners and of course no playoffs. Also, FLA (22 years), COL (22), ARI (17), and TB (17) haven't been around for 25 years. WAS (10) & MON (15) have shared a franchise.

Years of making playoffs or .500 record:
NYY (22)
ATL (21)
LAD (21)
STL (19)
BOS (19)

16 of 30 teams have between 10 and 16 years of playoffs/.500 record. Nine other teams have between 5 and 9 seasons of making the playoffs/.500 record.

Teams with 15+ losing seasons:
PIT (20)
KC (19)
BAL (17)
CHIC (17)
MIL (17)
FLA (16)
SD (16)
DET (15)
NYM (15)
CIN (15)

As for the Phillies. Only 10 teams have made the playoffs more than the six times they have gone. Only six teams have won more than their six divisions. Only four teams have made the WS more than the three times they made it. Is it super? No, but I'll take it considering that many teams have been worse during this time.

World Series Titles:
NYY (5)
BOS (3)
SF (3)

Discuss.......

The comparison between these two teams is eerie

If you've watched the NBA at all this year, you've enjoyed watching the Golden State Warriors master the skill of ball movement and shot making. They've been beautiful to watch. Very similar to our team this year.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, the similarity between us and them has carried into NBA finals. The Cavaliers are taking away the passing lanes forcing the Warriors into an isolation game, and in do doing are making the most efficient offensive team in the NBA look inept. Sound familiar? (My editorial comment is that it's not about size, it's about beating people off the dribble).

So as to keep the Golden State/Nova comparison theme going, my crystal ball says that the little Aussie prick banks in a 3 pointer with under a minute left to win it for the Cavs.

A couple things

a) for those who participate in the Canoebrook golf outing fundraiser for Villanova basketball - the event is scheduled for monday, 21 September. Save the date.

b) the game in Hawaii on 7 December will be precede by some sort of Villanova fan oriented event on the west coast - possibly LA or San Diego. That will be on the 4th. Team is in Hawaii for the 5th and 6th. Game will most likely be played on Hickam air force base to avoid potential weather issues that arise when trying to play on air craft carriers and the like. It is unclear so far how ticketing will be handled and what kind of # of tickets will be available for fans of the teams.

c) hoping to close the loop shortly with Painter to get his thoughts on his visit yesterday.

Some interesting stats

So it's Friday and I just got into work and I'm a little bored, so wanted to share some interesting stats...

  • This past year, 22% of our shot attempts were considered a transition bucket (scoring within the first 10 seconds of the shot clock). Of those shots, 48.5% of the shots were at the rim and 40% of shots were from 3. Of those shots, we shot 68% from 2 and 37.4 from 3. (Those numbers say we score more from 2 than from 3 in these situations)
  • The 22% of transition opportunities is low...Georgetown had 23.4%. UNC was the highest I saw at around 30%.
  • In transition situations from a steal, we shoot an astonishing 74.4% when we take the ball to the rim, which is over 68% of the time, which is pretty darn good.
  • Of our 3 losses, statistically speaking, the Georgetown game was our worst and it wasn't even close. Only one player (Arch) had an Offensive Rating above his Defensive rating.
  • I mentioned this in another thread, but our three highest usage guys (Hillard, Pinkston, Ennis) are no longer with the team.
  • Of those three guys, 2 of them (Ennis, Hillard) had the lowest percentage of Free Throw Attempts / Field Goal Attempts (around 27%) but Pinkston had a percentage of around 88%. (JVP shot 188 FT's and shot 225 FG's)
  • Again from those three guys, from a perspective of win shares, we lose the guys in 3rd place (Hillard) 5th place (JVP) and 8th place (Ennis)
  • Again from our three guys we need to replace, from an offense rating perspective in conference games, we lose guys in 5th, 7th and 8th place (Hillard, JVP, Ennis) However, from a defensive rating perspective, we lose our number 2 (Hillard) 3 (Pinkston) and 4 (Ennis)
  • Ochefu is a very good offensive rebounder...but he's not very good at getting a rebound and going straight up. He grabs 14% of all offensive rebounds (which was 36th best in the nation) but he only had 24 offensive putbacks. And that's not baskets, that's just total shots as he only shot roughly 48% on those shots. Only 15% of his shots at the rim were putbacks, which is also low.
  • That being said, Ochefu is good at the tap back or throwing an outlet pass to set back up the offense and he does grab a lot of offensive rebounds.
  • Josh and Kris had 100% of their 3 point baskets from an assist, meaning they did not create their own shot for a 3.
  • Archi was so bad in the non-conference but so good in the conference, at least offensively. His overall Offense Rating was 119, but in conference, he was the best offensive player on our team with a 128 rating, just ahead of Jenkins and Ochefu.

OT : Rumor of huge get for Nova Lacrosse

Rumor going around that the Froccaro brothers, Jake and Joey are headed to Nova.

This is big news cause they are both total studs and I believe Joey is leaving Princeton to head to Nova. And I believe Jake was supposed to go to Princeton this fall. Their older brother Jeff was a monster at Princeton and took down Nova in 2012 at their highest ranking - I think he scored 6 goals on the Cats.

Now to make matters more confusing their SISTER - is like #4 on Villanova's all time scoring list - her name ? Jackie.

Jeff, Jackie, Joey, Jake - I may have screwed up Jake and joeys situations - but you get the idea.

Anyway - supposedly this is a huge coup for Corrado - and these 2 will have a HUGE impact immediately.
