Big win over #11 Duke!

http://www.villanova.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/111917aaa.html

Great win for the Lady Cats today! Only 8 TO's for the game! Unreal.

"Duke Head Coach Joanne McCallie

Opening Statement:

“It was a nice blue collar game in a gym with lots of history. I give credit to Villanova as they played a better game. There was better leadership by their student-athletes but they had eight turnovers we tried to create on environment where they would have more than that. Our 15 turnovers hurt us whether it was a moving screen or a bad pass because it was possession basketball game and it was slower pace than we would have liked as we had trouble creating a tempo. Losing a game by nine that something you should get and is a reachable win. You have to able to play any kind of game and we didn’t have enough to do that today.”

Interesting Idea On Big Five Scheduling Change

NCAA.com's Andy Katz spoke with Drexel coach Zach Spiker, and Spiker revealed an idea that is "floating around" regarding the Big Five schedule and including Drexel.

Spiker said that the idea is not his, but that he would "100%" support it. The idea is this: Instead of the traditional Big Five schedule, there would be a City Six tournament on the season's opening weekend. The previous season's RPI would reportedly be used in determining the opening matchups.

On its face, the idea has a lot of merit. It would allow Drexel to take a bigger role in the long tradition of Philadelphia college basketball. It would help to create some early season buzz in the sport. More importantly, and perhaps the biggest reason this has a chance to actually come to fruition, it would alleviate the scheduling issues faced by the schools, particularly Villanova. By moving from the current four-game round robin set up to an early season tournament, the king of the City Six could be decided in three games instead of four (although logistics would still need to be figured out), opening up an extra date for each of the schools to schedule. And getting it done on the first weekend of the season would allow for more time to work with to get that extra date scheduled.

All things considered, it's hard to imagine any of the schools being opposed to this. The constraints on scheduling caused by the round robin format would be eliminated. It would provide a great opportunity to showcase the tradition of Philadelphia college basketball, with a more focused spotlight. And it could provide an early-season boost for the sport as a whole.

It remains to be seen how seriously this idea is being considered at the moment, and there would be logistical issues that would have to be ironed out. But it would be great for the schools (with Drexel and Villanova arguably gaining the most), it would be great for the city, and it would be great for the sport. It will be interesting to see if this idea gains traction and comes to fruition.

Great article on HP and coaching his players daughters

"“I have no idea if it happened anywhere or not,’’ Perretta said. “Dean [Kenefick, associate AD/communications] just said to me, `Do you realize you have three players that their mothers played for you?’ I said, `Yeah, I do.’ It’s kinda nuts.’’
It says something about the program Perretta has built. If the mothers did not have a good experience, there is no way they would be sending their daughters.
“We’ve created a family atmosphere, and kids kind of enjoyed themselves when they came here,’’ Perretta said. “Villanova itself is attractive. The kids came for education.’’

Assessing 2018 After The Early Signing Period

Rivals' Corey Evans takes a look at each conference's leader in 2018 recruiting after the early signing period while highlighting who could challenge for the top spot in each conference when the classes are finalized.

For those who just want the Nova info, Evans currently has Providence in the lead with the commitments of David Duke and A.J. Reeves. He tabs Nova as the primary threat to hop the Friars, with Cole Swider and Brandon Slater already on the board and Jairus Hamilton, Courtney Ramey, and even Jahvon Quinerly still lingering. I would add Bryce Wills to that list as well.

Cats Getting Involved With Another 2018 Prospect?

Jairus Hamilton, a four-star 6-7/6-8 forward currently ranked 82nd by Rivals recently spoke with Rivals' Corey Evans about three official visits and the state of his recruitment, and he said that Villanova is trying to get in the mix.

Hamilton has taken visits to Boston College, Mississippi State, and Maryland, and said he has started to hear from Villanova and Kansas.

He expects to make a decision in late December or early January.

Based on his quotes in the story, a few things he seems to be considering are the roster makeup of the schools and his ability to contribute early, as well as development and sending players to the pros.

While Nova isn't known as a factory for NBA players, Jay Wright has sent a respectable number of guys on the NBA, with Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges next in line to potentially make that jump. An interesting parallel here is Josh Hart, who came to Villanova as the 84th ranked player in his class and left as a first-round draft pick. As far as player development and players getting better, Jay Wright has to be mentioned among the best in this department.

Nova is clearly late to the party here, but Hamilton doesn't seem to be in a rush to make a decision and seems to be enjoying the process. Outside of Kansas (who was only mentioned briefly by Hamilton) Nova is the most nationally relevant program involved at this point.

It remains to be seen how much of an actual player Nova becomes in this recruitment or how many resources they are willing to devote to it, but the one thing that is clear is that Wright wants to add a third commitment to the class of 2018. Tyler Herro recently committed to Kentucky, but Villanova has continued to push hard for Courtney Ramey and have recently landed in the top four of Bryce Wills. Now they appear to be getting involved with Hamilton. Again, we'll have to wait and see how serious Nova is and if Hamilton is interested, but it's something else to keep an eye on.

Nova vs Columbia thoughts

Don’t care that this is the wrong board.

I thought it was a decent performance for Game 1, a little bit ugly but that’s expected. Was a little surprised that DiVincenzo didn’t start, but Jay called him a 6th starter in the post game interview.

Paschall was a beast and looked very confident in himself. Will be interesting to watch him develop now that he is playing his more natural position (4) most of the time. Brunson will be consistent all year, and appears to be the leader of this team. DiVincenzo’s athleticism is fun to watch. Team 3pt shooting and FT shooting will improve. I’ll be in attendance again on Tuesday night against Nichols St.

Columbia Game Thread

So we tried this last year and frankly it was a disaster. There appeared to be zero interest, and that's ok. That being said, we'll give it another try this year and see how it goes. If it works, great, and if not we'll shut it down and devote our resources elsewhere.

But if anyone does happen to be interested, I'll be keeping an eye here throughout the game and will be here to post some updates and chat if anyone chimes in. Enjoy the game and Go Cats!
