FIFA Raid

FIFA is obviously the most corrupt/fixed sport out there.

The NBA and NFL are trying to learn how to fix like FIFA does to increase $$, but FIFA is on a WWE-like level right now. Everyone knows it's fixed and millions still chime in, incredible business-model.

I watch the Workd Cup. Still, this news is YAWN worthy.....

Please clarify the level of fixing going on here. I am a stupid American and the only thing I know about soccer is that they took bribes to have their big event in a desert country with stadiums built by slaves.

Is this really the best use of the Justice Department's and the FBI's time and resources?

Agree. Shouldn't they be going after really corrupt people who impact our country, like the Clintons for example.
Fun fact. I once sent a check via FedEx to Hillary Clinton's agency for $225K for a 30 minute photo session (no more than 50 photos with up to 100 people) and a 30 minute moderated Q&A.

That was peanuts compared to what Bill got though. $700K for the same format.

Obama wasting federal resources on FiFA? All because FIFA aed the cup e wrong Muslim ? Donald trump's head might explode. Thanks Obama.

Wonder how much $ was spent investigating steroids in baseball. The system is beyond repair. Priorities are so out of wack and the corruption is so deeply ingrained in politicians and lobbyists that it's pointless to get mad about it.

Yes. Talking about tens of millions of dollars worth of bribes here. Would you prefer that the Justice Department and FBI only investigate terror-related subjects? These guys are criminals too.

I am a little surprised that the CONCACAF President, Jeffrey Webb was involved. Not good. He ran on a platform of cleaning up the game in our region. Turns out he was just as bad.

No, there are plenty of other crimes they can investigate in addiction to those that are terror-related. Just don't think going after a glorified badminton association is worthwhile....particularly when they will dramatically outspend you.

Catching up on the FIFA thing but to understand... the DOJ and FBI will arrest people on corruption over the media rights to a game of footie, but fixing world markets or enabling money laundering for cartels only warrants fines?

The US government got pissed that we didn't get either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup here. It makes a gigantic financial impact wherever it goes, and our country lost billions. Revenge move.

Got it. So we should prosecute some crimes, but not others. Maybe you could list out for us the crimes they shouldn't investigate so Eberzzz can make a mental list.

Lost in this is that the United States is really the only country in the world that is good at fighting international crime. Note how bad the International Criminal Court is at its job.

Great point. Which is why the Swiss and EU nations are rallying behind the US investigation and cooperating.

Unfortunately the Third World nations, Russia, China, South America and Africa, want to keep the status quo because of the payoffs.

This will eventually come to a head. What CONMEBOL and Africa need to realize is that the money starts to run dry if UEFA and CONCACAF take their ball and go home. It's essentially a wealth transfer from the developed nations to these backwater countries. Akin to people paying high taxes in Northern New Jersey to support meth heads in Goldsboro, NC.

The E:60 piece on Blatter / FIFA was fascinating. Especially Blatter's connection to the Qatar guy going back to his first election in 1977. Worthwhile watch for futbol fans.

Bill Clinton is pissed that his FIFA payoffs didn't land the 2018 or 2022 World Cup so he got his boy Obama to settle the score.

Love the timing. Had to wait until these knuckleheads were in one place together in a friendly nation.

Like The Warriors opening scene. Except better executed.

He didn't withdraw for anything. He lost the first vote, which required 2/3rds majority. The next vote would've been a simple majority.
Glad the USA supported the Prince.

The funny thing is that Men in Blazers said, just after it broke that Blatter would blame the English speaking world for being jealous that the World Cup wasn't awarded to them. That's exactly what he did.

I will admit, I don't really know much about the World Cup selection process. I don't even remember hearing about Russia getting the 2018 tournament. However, when I did hear that Qatar got the 2022, I pretty much knew it was bought. But since that's how these things get done (like The Olympics), I never really thought anything would come of it.

Buying the Olympics is less obvious when you see the listing of countries who have hosted the event (particularly the summer) but when the world cup has been hosted by either world powers or world soccer powers and they'd move it to the winter for an oil rich nation that is neither a world power or world soccer power, you'd have to think it would piss alot of people off.

Watch Qatar field a surprisingly competitive team in the 2022 World Cup. Not because the quality of Qatari soccer will somehow get higher, but because over the next few years, they'll be giving a bunch of African and Arab teenagers life-changing sums of money to play for Qatar. Both Qatar and Bahrain have been doing it for around a decade in track and field.

For example, the world record holder in the steeplechase, Saif Saaeed-Shaheen was born in Kenya and was known as Stephen Cherono until 2003.

Sepp Blatter resigns
We need an NBD "Sepp Blatter remembered thread" . . .

I suspect he knew he was going to resign before the election, but didn't want the prince to back into the presidency. Frankly, I think this is actually a positive. Have the election, win, and then let people know he is resigning so that there can be some real debate about who his replacement will be. Of course in any election where there are the Cayman Islands has as much a say as Germany is subject to manipulation...

Report out that new evidence has been discovered since Friday directly linking him/Jerome Voelker with South African bribery.

Key man in it was Warner from CONCACAF. Same guy who posted a video of himself citing The Onion as a legit source.
