Flyers' New Coach

North Dakota's HC Dave Hakstol. Anyone know this dude?

That is interesting. Very good program and he's always in the mix @ND, but this is really a risk of a hire. Personally I kind of like it - as i am not crazy about the guys available in your typical game of musical retreads. It's outside of the box, that's for sure. No idea if it will work though. Or won't work for that matter.

Hopefully he will bring in some good assistants familiar with the NHL game to help him out. Other than that, I can't comment on it because I know nothing about him. I thought for sure the Flyers would get Babcock. If this team was being run the way it always has (Mr. Snider being heavily involved) they probably would have. I guess Hextall is really being allowed to do what he wants and sees fit. That is a good thing.

I was pretty sure they would not get Babcock. He doesnt really do rebuilds. Flyers are not in full rebuild more, but there is plenty of work to do there, and i don't see him going to a place like that. Toronto and Buffalo kicking the tires but i don't see it there either. If the Blues were smart they would have canned Hitch, jumped on this and went out and found someone reliable in net.

flyers never even filed the paper work to interview Babcock they would have had to give up a 3rd rd draft pick next year.

UND is a top 2-3 college program that pumps out NHL talent on a regular basis. will this guy succeed? who knows. but I like the gamble.

Flyers fans should thank their lucky stars they didnt get Pete Deboer.

Better than waiting for a coach that gets fired from another team........isn't that the way it usually works.

Pretty much what I think except I do t view it as all that risky. Like you said the retreads aren't all that intriguing and I think I like the fact that this GM is doing it a little differently and taking somewhat of a chance with an unknown.

It's a risk because if he doesnt get pro players you run the risk of creating a pretty awful environment - and your star player(s) will either want out or you waste key years. Other than that - it's an fairly interesting choice. I was expecting a return of Hitchcock.

From what I hear this guys' teams play with their hair on fire, every shift is an all-out grind, sounds like the Chip Kelly of college hockey. I feel like his new-school style will pay dividends in the short term but inevitably the players will tire of his requirement to play balls out each shift. He's an NHL coach, he's hired to be fired.

Hakstol & Hextall.

Dick move by Hextall to hire a guy with practically the same sounding last name. Really did a huge disservice to the mouth breathing sports talk Neanderthals who will never get this guy's name right. Confusion will ensue.

That fruitcake Al Morganti said that this is a risky hire because this guy has no experience at this level.

Isn't today the 40th anniversary of the last time that Lord Stanley's cup was raised by the Fly Guys?

Mister Snider is such a nitwit.

hopefully he has the same success as North Dakota's own Phil Jackson.

Al Morganti and Rhea Hughes have a combined IQ of -12. dont take anything they say seriously. Al might have brain damage. ever listen to him when Angelo is off?

everyone starts somewhere. im ok with the hire. i never got when people criticized coaches before they had a chance to coach. Coach K came from Army to Duke and ended up almot being fired. pretty sure Duke is glad tye gave him more time.

i always believe its up to the person to gain the respect of the professional players not just the reputation.

Mike Keenan had no NHL experience and he had a pretty good run for a while.

And I believe if I am not mistaken the job he had before he took the Flyers was at University of Toronto. I was just thinking of that. I think Keenan had AHL or CJHL experience though prior to that.

I could not have been more wrong on Babcock. He not only went to a rebuild, he went to the biggest one he could find - Toronto. He must LOVE Mitch Marner. ( Cant blame him there) but holy hell. I'd say he doesnt know what he's in for but of he doesnt know by now he's been on an island with no TV the last 12 years.

he loves money is what he loves.

Whats funny is the media is going ape shit over the fact that Hak doesn't have any NHL experience! The guy that just signed the biggest coaching contract in NHL history never played a game in the NHL either.
