Matt Williams as Nats' Manager Remembered

Should have canned him over weekend and not let him finish. To me that's the ultimate insult. Or better yet, fire him soon as they were eliminated.

Thank god. About time.

As for another firing: Joe Philbin. What a joke of a franchise. So much for the Dolphins hype this year.

Nd, not until Friday. In celebration kids are working on a new handshake.

Dusty Baker!!!

Finally, some long-awaited interest: Dusty Baker interviewing with the Nationals today. Rock-solid source.

Down to Dusty Baker and Bud Black. I am really hoping they go with Baker as Black is actually a competent manager and does a great job with his pitching staff.

Going with Dusty seems sort of like letting them manage themselves. Not sure that would work with this group. I don't know that you can go for a Bowa type either.

While Williams was bad and deserved to be fired earlier in the year, I think it all gets back to the fact that the biggest problem with this group of Nationals has been the players and their attitudes, not the managers.

My guess is that a bit more roster turnover than has been seen in recent years will help some with that.

Guess the owner consulted his laminated salary card and realized he couldn't afford Black?

I was hoping that this would happen.

gr8 news for the rest of the division.

Agreed. Baker is not the right guy for this team. They would have been better served bringing in a younger guy - someone in the Matheny mold. I thought Black would have been a very good hire as well - he is a great pitching mind.

Did anyone see the Phils added Mickey Morandini as their 1B coach? I expect him to be groomed to be the next manager in 2 years or so.

not to mention, his authority is immediately and forever undermined with the world knowing that he was not the first choice, just available at the right price. While the inmates always run the asylum in the major U.S. pro sports given the salaries (except NFL perhaps given all the non-guaranteed deals and power that gives coaches), that is not really what the Nationals needed either.

Still think Amaro should be their 1B coach

I think it demonstrates the internal issues with the Nats. How do you announce that you've got your new manager absent having a contract locked down? That's amateur hour stuff. So either Rizzo leaked it, trying to jam ownership. If so, that's a very bad sign. Or they didn't do their homework and realize how far apart they were on a contract with Black. Reports where they offered Black a one year $1.6 million deal. How in the world can you expect a manager to come in on a one-year contract? Sounds like a Lerner issue to me and not all that surprising. You spend $165 million on the team and try to nickel and dime the manager. Just dumb.

As for Dusty Baker the hire. He'll be a lot better than strawman Williams so I'm fine with the ultimate hire. It's an upgrade. Anyone really trying to make hay around the hire is just trolling. He'll be fine but the process wreaks of amateur hour.

I am not trolling. I am not all that impressed with Dusty's body of work as a manager.

To say that he has his work cut out for him managing that crew of malcontents and douchebags is an understatement.

As for Lerner, I had no idea that he is in his 90s yet somehow he is still actively involved in the management of the organization. That explains a lot.

Again, all good news for the rest of the division.

Dusty may have Scherzer pitch 300 innings next season.

Charlie won two pennants and a World Series title.

Dusty won one pennant, the last coming 13 years ago, and was fired by the Cubs.

Your standards are pretty low if you are happy because he isn't Matt Williams. But I am not complaining.

Charlie is a simpleton. He won because he had a great team. Thats my point. Ned Yost just won a title. Managing baseball is not rocket surgery.

Initial reaction is not so favorable. Narrative includes the following:

"But Baker also has a reputation for not managing his pitchers well (example: Kerry Wood and Mark Prior in Chicago) and, like the Nats, has never found success in the postseason. His 2002 Giants team won the NL, but lost the World Series. His Reds teams had an abundance of talent, but never put it together enough for a deep postseason run. Sound familiar, Nats fans? Now Baker and the Nats will try to get over that hump together."

The other thing about the Nats job that can't help in attracting the guy you want is you have to be willing to work for Rizzo and this ownership group. Looking at the managers they've hired since the team became good is telling. Davey Johnson did not have teams lined up at his door and neither did Williams. Have to imagine a lot of guys already said no thanks before they got to Black and Baker.

All things being equal, a team with the Nats' talent should have people lining up. When the Phils' job was open after they canned Bowa, where you could see there was lots of talent that was mismanaged, people were fighting for the job in the media. Leyland was campaigning and went on the airwaves and complained about how they hired Chollie over him.
