Congrats to Sheila Reid on a blistering fast 1500M last friday out at Mt. Sac. Her 4:11 is 5 sec. faster than any other collegiate 1500 up to this point. Only runner she couldn't beat was Shalene Flanagan, who is pretty darn tough.

Interesting results in the 5K too. Shippensburg's Neely Spence beat Jordan Hasay. Too bad that Spence is tied to at the hip to her dad, who is also a pretty good guy so I can't be too critical. She would have been a serious stud for us. She also beat Mimic by 15 sec. in the same race.

I also saw that two Georgetown women also ran great times right behind her. If they have two more, they could be a threat in the 4 x 1500, and Cox, who rabbitted the race, is a serious 800 runner. This would make them a threat in the DMR. The biggest threat, however, is Oregon, which did not run their best 800 runner at the indoor nationals.

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

Oregon will not be at Penn.

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

The 4x1500 has three leges defined - Reid, Mimic, & Lipari. So this weekend will probably define the fourth leg. However, one should be concerned about Georgetown. Check the Olympic Development 1500 for women. There are two G'town finishers at 5th and 9th running 4:19.5 & 4:21.6.

The DMR will be interesting. Neutts ran an outstanding leg at NCAAs and Verdier has impressed with her 53.7. My question is who runs the 1200 leg - Lipari or Mimic?

Whitecat, I read that piece by Bertucci posted on vurunning blog. There is a conflict. He says Oregon is not coming. The Oregon website says they are coming. I cannot imagine Lananna not coming to Penn Relays. It is great for his East coast recruiting

sebastianc,

That blog is where I got my information.

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

Since I posted that the Oregon website said they were coming to Penn Relays, there has apparently been a change. As of now, the site does not indicate Oregon is coming to Penn Relays. They are scheduled to run at the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday, May 1st. I wonder does that suggest Stanford is not coming. Neither school is listed as coming on the Penn Relays site. Too bad.

My usual take is that if you have something, you come to Penn Relays. Otherwise you stay home. Look in the Penn Relays program and see where some of the schools came from when they had something - e.g., Arizona, Arizona St., Abilene Christian, Colorado, San Jose St., Wisconsin, etc. But this is Oregon. Maybe they aren't ready or someone is hurt?

On that same note, I question why anyone would go to a school that doesn't run at the Penn Relays.

Note the comments from the BYU coach. He is coming, this year, because he thinks he has something in the Women's 4x800.

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

sebastianc,

In the same interviews Marcus said that Ellison ran a 46/400 split in Florida. That's the first I have heard of that.

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

Walt -- Here are the results of the 4x400 at the Miami Hurricanes Alumni Invitational -- I do not know about Ellison's split, so I guess we have to take M. O'S. at his word on that one.

4x400

2. 2 Trinidad & Tobago A 3:08.23

4. 4 Bethune-Cookman A Jackson, Embry, Pamilton, Horton 3:14.65

5. 5 Connecticut A Holst, Bennatan, Rutt, Whyte 3:20.25

When Ellison ran the open 400, he ran 47.61 at the meet in winning heat 3 (he was 6th overall):

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

One has to accept Marcus' word on this one. He is the coach and the one timing the splits. If true, that is real good. VU has not had 400 speed like that since Elvis Lewis. Note tha the last two 400 recruits - Andrew Burt (NJ) in 2009 and Cortlandt Harris (MD) in 2010 - are no longer with the team. And the one that got away - Patrick Farmer (NY) - is at Virginia.

Would be great to see VU have a competitive 4x400. Would make the last event at Penn Relays truly exciting. I understand the scholarship contraints, etc., but it still would be nice... and it is possible.

Note that from Pennsylvania's all-state track team in 2010, the 1st team 400m was Brady Gehret, now at Penn St.; Ellison was 3rd team; 2nd team was Matt Gilmore (now a senior at Cheltenham). I don't know if he is on VU's radar, Next Saturday we will see a few outstanding 400m runners at Penn Relays. That is one of the fun parts of the Relays. Just maybe VU is in the hunt for one.

Note: the top 400 runner in the East is Najee Wilson (NJ). He is only a junior. But he is in the VU recruiting territory

Re: Mt. Sac Meet: OT/OT Somewhat

Gehret is a flat out stud. Already an AA indoors this year. The kid is going to be a very good one.
