Music Check In

NorCal, how was the show? Sounds like Typhoon went on real early, hope you caught some of their set but I'd imagine not easy to get up there for that.

Dr Dog just announced EIGHT shows in NYC next January. Four in a row each at Music Hall of Williamsburg and then four in a row at Bowery Ballroom. Pretty cool.

I wound up getting there around 620 and caught the last 3 or so Typhoon songs. They rocked it. Sometimes bands that big can come off as unorganized live (full horn sections, several violins), but they sound well put together.

Grouplove is not my favorite band but they put on a fun show with lots of energy.

Portgual the man crushed it. Highly recommend checking them out. Crazy visuals, great tunes, lots of fun.

Rumsey Playfield (summerstage) in central park is a great setting for a concert but a terrible venue. I think because of the neightbors they turn down the speakers, and need to be done by 10 (which is fine for a tuesday...non butcher story).

Nice. Yeah Typhoon is super tight, really impressive for such a big band. Seen them at Mercury Lounge and Le Poisson Rouge and both shows were great.

Portugal is a good band, have yet to see them live but have always heard positive things about their show.

Agree on Rumsey, cool setting but not a good venue at all.

The Replacements, an all time favorite for me, absolutely killed it last night. Forest Hills is an outstanding place to see a show, but a slight drag as they shut it down at 10pm sharp. Set list felt like was about 5 songs too light. However, what we got was a tight yet effortless run though of one of the most underrated catalogs in all of music. They sounded great.

If you have a chance to check out Jon batiste and the stay human you absolutely need to do so. Straight up owned great American music hall last night.

Russian river festival tomorrow with another one of the 90's girls. Trombone shorty and Gary Clark jr shutting it down.

DMill, great to hear. I thought I was actually going to get there last night but my ticket fell through around 4pm. Oh well.

Butcher, Gary Clark Jr is great live. Think you've seen him before but if not definitely check that out.

Last Sunday night I went to Brooklyn to see Against Me. I don't listen to a ton of punk music but I like that band a lot. This was a last minute show, added after opening for Gaslight Anthem. Played a tiny place, 250 people or so. Awesome crowd, such a fun show. Only drag was that it started at 1am... Made Monday work a little rough.

Summary of the concert at the Mann
Dr. Dog - Mediocre
Mac DeMarco - Awesome - stole the show.
The Front Bottoms - they blow
Hop Along - the blow even worse

Chimp, yep seen him 3 times. Dude is one of the baddest mofo's on the planet. Can't wait to see him in this setting.

Saw The Black Keys last night at Barclays with ctnova (MIA on 4.6 but he should come back). Anyways, real good show. Kind of amazing to me that they can sell out two nights in an arena, place was packed. Sound as good as ever though.... quality concert.

Chimpat, where did you sit? imo Barclays is a great venue if you are in the lower bowl, but miserable if you are in the upper deck, where as MSG is actually not terrible from the upper deck.

We were upper deck, but right next to the stage (looking straight down at it). I didn't think it was terrible because we were so close in those regards. I can see it being pretty miserable if we were further back. I've been to two other shows there and had lower/floor seats for both which I thought were really good.

yep, i went 2 years ago, great festival. everyone really friendly and fantastic vibe. footprint is large but not too spread out. i believe, if i'm remembering correctly, you can bring chairs in and set them up a certain distance from the stages. you'll have totems everywhere though, more than i've seen at every festival, so be prepared to deal w/ some obstructive views. we had VIP which i didn't think was worth it, although i don't believe we made proper use of the VIP viewing areas at each stage.

after the festival there are a couple fun bars/restaurants right on the main road - barton springs - that you traverse to get into the festival (unless you take a taxi which drops you off right behind the venue). there are 2 main areas to go out; there are these houses that have been converted into outdoor bars and what not down on south congress area (south of the river), very very cool. then there are the rainey street bars which also have those types of houses just north of the river. and lastly you have 6th street, a bit further north but close to rainey street.

the first night we walked from the venue back up to 6th street, which is approx 1.5+ miles away. not a terrible walk, but if it's hot watch out. they have a million pedi-cabs which can get you from point a to b as well. the bar scenes are out of control, usually UT plays on the road those weekends but if there are college girls around forget about it. tons of other live music around each night, too.

you'll have a blast.

where are you staying?
Butcher, thanks for the info. Had an amazing weekend at ACL. Saw tons of good bands.... Pearl Jam, Outkast, Eminem (he was awesome), Childish Gambino, Trombone Shorty, J Roddy & The Business, Gaslight Anthem, Jenny Lewis, Bleachers, Benjamin Booker, etc.

Spent three long days at the festival but such a great setup. Ended up renting bikes and riding them in and out of the grounds most days which worked out well. The last day we just took them and parked on Barton Springs and watched the 1pm football games at a bar before walking the rest of the way into the festival. Sick setup they've got down there, those bars must absolutely kill it over the three days.

Did one aftershow.... J Roddy at Stubbs BBQ which was real fun too (food was amazing also).... and we went out on Sixth Street one night.

Great, great time. Would go back again in a heartbeat.

Nice dude glad you had fun. All of my friends who went wknd 2 said even with the mud it was awesome. Headed to Austin in 2 weekends for a wedding unfortunately no one I really want to see there that weekend.

Modest Mouse absolutely ripped sht a few weeks back and even on though it was the Monday after my brothers wedding/eagles vs rams weekend in philly Kasabian were fantastic in Oakland. Last weekend in NYC at escape Yeasayer took everyone straight down the rabbit hole

This weekend is treasure island consistently one of the best festivals for identifying young talent before they explode and offering a lineup heavy on solid indy bands. Outkast headlining one night which is eh but TV on the radio, new pornographers, massive attack and others carry an impressive bill. Little of everything. I'm most excited for jungle probably followed by st Lucia (2nd time) and then massive attack. Lineup is stacked.

The mud wasn't terrible. Rain died out around noon on Saturday so it was a little messy but never really rained much at the festival. I brought a shitty pair of shoes and just threw them out after the fest.

When I saw that lineup for the NYC fest, I knew Yeasayer would be the highlight. I've seen them a bunch and they're really good live. Very good band.

Day 1 Treasure Island Music Fest = greeat success. Mø, Ana Tijoux, Jungle, Classixx, St. Lucia, even Zedd all brought the A-game. No overlapping set times, 2 stages, 25k or so people, SF as the backdrop. Insane.

Today Chet Faker, Banks, Alt-J, TV on the Radio, and Massive Attack. Gonna get dirty.

The Brothers last stand at the beacon starts tonight. Anyone hitting up a show? Wife scored tix for me as a gift so we will be there tonight and I am working on the weekend.

On a different note, anyone ever listen to John Fullbright? Caught a tune of his on Siruis and really dug the sound, downloaded a live album and been wearing it out. Country but in the Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt mold. Good stuff.. think he is really young too. Worth checking out All The Time in The World

Going back about a week ago had a good three night run (Weds- Fri).

Weds- John Popper side project at Brooklyn Bowl

Thurs- Benjamin Booker at Mercury Lounge

Fri - J Roddy Walston & The Business at Stage 48

Was cool seeing Popper for the first time in ages and Brooklyn Bowl is an awesome venue but a depressing crowd, maybe 100 people there or so. Kind of awkward in a space that holds a lot more but hey, easy to get beers with that few people there.

Booker at Mercury was awesome. This kid is getting some big buzz and the room was packed. They announced a show for him at Music Hall of Williamsburg so he'll be playing much bigger rooms soon. I love his debut album, one of my favorites this year.

J Roddy's a band I've really gotten into this year. Very good live band and the crowd was pumped for this show. Pretty young crowd, must be big on the college scene as people were singing along to all the songs. Venue is kind of strange, think they mostly use it for a club and I heard the band was having issues with the sound (although it sounded good to me in the crowd) but overall a fun show.

Saw the Revivalists last week at the TLA. They just keep getting better and better.

What kind of stuff did Popper play? Covers, originals, dip into the BT catalogue?

No covers, may have been mostly originals. I didn't recognize any of the stuff but it was cool to see/hear him again. A buddy of mine was in town staying across the street at the Wythe so I thought it would just be something fun and cheap to check out.

trombone shorty & orleans ave is coming to terminal 5 in NYC coming up. if you haven't seen them yet, get involved.

STS9 this past saturday at the fox theater in oakland. legs are still sore from white boy dancing so hard.

just got pretty lights @ sea of dreams for dec 30th and then trombone shorty w/ the north mississippi all starts for NYE here in SF.

not a lot between now and then, hopefully something pops up.

Butcher, saw Trombone Shorty at ACL. Wow..... great performer. Show was a lot of fun, I was very impressed.

Nice mini run Chimpat.

Shorty is great.. closed out Jazz fest this year which was fun, beyond some of the other NoLa venues I also got to see him down at The Box for his album release party which was pretty cool at a spot that small.

Kind... I missed the Revivalists Thursday but my buddy said they brought it as they usually do. Their live show is great.

Will have a nice stretch from now through January starting with some Railroad Earth this weekend

I'm a big J Roddy fan--was able to see them twice this year (most recently in Philly at the TLA). I got to meet them this summer at a festival--super nice guys who love to talk music. Great live band.

Last week I caught Lake Street Dive at Union Transfer in Philly. One of the best shows I've seen all year.

Seeing Head and the Heart tonight at Hammerstein Ballroom. Hoping to get their early to see the opener PHOX. Anyone seen them? Wondering if they put on a good show.

Big fan of these guys. Some great tunes.

That's awesome, Oyster. When I saw them at Stubbs in Austin this summer, their drummer had dinner next to my table ( I didn't know it was him until they got on stage). Seem like a good group of guys, great live band.

NorCal they are good. Not a band I listen to a ton but have seen them at Newport in the festival setting and at a theatre. Both times I was entertained.

Has anyone bought The New Basement tapes and or watched the showtime documentary on the making of it? I really dig the album and it was cool seeing the process of how it got made.

NorCal, I haven't seen them but they played Newport Folk this summer ( I just missed their set). I've heard good things about their live show, especially if you're familiar with their material.

Saw the Showtime documentary. That chick was terrible. I guess you gotta hit your quota though.

Ha... They all seemed to tire of her during that session with lost on the river song. She has a good voice though and cool band if you are into bluegrass. Think they were the first all African American band to play at the Grand Ole Opry.

I'm digging the album. Really like "When I get my hands on you" and "Kansas City"

I did see that! Can't wait for some new material and I'm sure they'll put together a big tour...... which will be awesome.

Jim James on "Down on the Bottom" is top notch.

On Austin for IMFCon caught Les Sins (dude from Toro y Moi's DJ side project) at Vulcan Gas Company. Nice little dance sesh

Finished my Favorite Songs of 2014 list if any of you guys want to give it a listen. Also added a spotify playlist this year so you can stream the whole thing.

Glad to see a Run The Jewels track on there. And you tossed on D'Angelo for good measure. Must have been a very late addition.

Yeah, love the Run the Jewels album. One of the best of 2014.

D'Angelo was last minute, but good album and that tune is great.
