Lots of pens fans are bummed they missed out on Saad because hes a local guy and would be a good fit with crosby or malkin. Saad is looking for $6.5 million supposedly, and the penguins just can't afford that.

They did not have the players. Would have made the cap space work, even if it meant trading someone.

Good luck with Kessel. Angry asshole. He can score though. Also, solid solid return for Leafs just getting the first rounder - getting out from that contract and attitude is a relief for them. Six more years at almost 8 per. Something's gotta give in Pittsburgh I think. 4 guys are going to take up about 35M in cap space.

that is an atrocious return for Kessel. the Leafs are also retaining $1.2 million/year of the contract.

If you followed what his tenure in Toronto was like, and that contract, it's a win for them. In a big way. He had to go, and his attitude sucks. Guy is a cancer. That's why the Bruins cut him lose so quickly.

look I hate Kessel but there is no way that is a "win" for Toronto. San Jose just traded a 1st for a goalie with 20 games experience for **** sakes, this was bad on Toronto's part.

Again, if you hate Kessel, imagine what his teammates think of him. It's worse. Also, San Jose did not take on 40+M to get a goalie - like the Pens did here. I was actually hearing rumors of a buy out attempt. So, you take the return, change your culture and move on. Cannot see a market for him knowing what we all know. It's not much less than what the Rangers paid for Nash - who was by all accounts a great locker room guy and a better player than Kessel.

theres absolutely 0% chance they were buying him out. thats silly talk, youre better than that

Kessel is a cancer but puts up points.

underwhelming return.

All things considered, it's about right. BTW - rather underwhelming year he is coming off. 8M for 25 and 61? It's the right move for Toronto, whose locker room was atrocious and he was the biggest reason why. Who would have paid more? Who has the space and would have paid more? Possible they could have done SLIGHTLY better in waiting - but when you are looking to unload 45M and 6 years and you have a buyer, you take it. And they were looking to unload him for a while now. Culture change is critical here. It was the right move. You bite the bullet to some extent and move on.

I never said trading him wasn't the right move. I said the return was nothing special

Again, all things considered, it's about right. You weren't going to net much more than that given his shit attitude and his high number and years remaining. Those contracts are very hard to move. Teams with a lot of space are usually shitty and dont want a huge contract and are more than just one guy away and good teams are usually at or near the cap. Not easy to do. take what you can get on a guy like this. It's always going to be pennies on the dollar.

If the pens win a cup with kessel, then I suppose it is all worthwhile. That being said, he was a douche in boston and a douche in toronto. very little chance he changes his tune in pittsburgh.

The Kessel trade gets worse for the Leafs. The first-round pick is conditional on Penguins making the playoffs.
