I have it on good authority that Marcus O'S is interested in LaSalle high school junior Tom Coyle, who just won the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships 1 mile and 3200 meter double (see results below). LaSalle is the same school that produced current red-shirting team member Tom Trainer (and is the same high school that produced Tom Donnelly back in the 1960s). Coyle is coached at LaSalle by former Haverford runner Greg Bielecki, and by all accounts Coyle is interested in Villanova as well. Someone to keep an eye on for fall 2013 perhaps.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

Coyle followed that up by winning PIAA District 12 AAA 1600 meter title, by a whopping 6.2 seconds. Qualified for State meet. Only a junior. LaSalle won the district team title by 15 pts.

And the kid just followed that district win by winning the PA state championship in the 1600 in a quick 4:11.97. Only a junior -- one to watch for next year.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

He ran 1:51.78 at the PA Distance Festival yesterday.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

The 1:51.8 says Marcus is onto something. The boy has the "speed" to be outstanding at the mile. Even run a leg on 4x800.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

A leisure Saturday and floating around the Internet and "discovered" a couple of interesting things about Coyle and LaSalle.

LaSalle finished 3rd in DMR championship at Penn Relays. Lead was Andrew Stone; anchor was Coyle. The two ran the first two legs of winning 4x400 (Catholic league) on 3:24+. Stone's lead-off was 50.1. The meet where Coyle ran 1:51.78 for second, Stone ran 1:52.35 for third. My point: maybe O'Sullivan thinks about the pair for VU?

See video interview with Coyle and Stone.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

I'm hearing rumors that Coyle has cooled a bit on Villanova. For what it's worth, LaSalle high school is my alma mater and I pay pretty close attention to that program. I wish it weren't true, but that's the last word I got from people who should know.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

LSU-Nit, any reason why Coyle is cooling towards VU? Has another school become more attractive?

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

LSU-nit & Sebastian,
You guys are the best!
I changed the name of this board to be more appropriate to what you and others bring to the table!

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

Thanks, Eric. If ever a school deserved a message board for track/XC, Villanova is that school.

On the Coyle front, here's the story I am getting. LaSalle's Coyle and Stone were both being encouraged to consider Villanova, and (at least) Coyle met a few months ago with Marcus. I had the impression that there was real interest from both parties. So far, so good. However, I have recently heard that neither Coyle or Stone currently have Villanova near the top of their respective lists. That could change, but the sense I have is that Villanova has fallen off the radar a bit for both guys.

BTW, both Coyle and Stone have been dealing with injuries this XC season. The team has run 4 meets at Belmont Plateau, but Coyle just ran his first race of the season 5 days ago. Stone has run the last 2, after missing the first 2. Both are trying to get back up to full fitness.

Stone is currently sitting at #5 and Coyle is at #6 on the Philadelphia Catholic League performance list, one second apart. There are actually 2 other LaSalle kids ahead of them on that list, but (one assumes) only for the time being. Seven of the top 9 guys at Belmont Plateau this PCL XC season have been from LaSalle.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

By way of a further update on LaSalle HS's Tom Coyle and Andrew Stone. Yesterday Coyle ran the fastest time (16:44) at Belmont Plateau this year, a full 10 seconds faster than anyone else at any of the 5 meets. Also, Stone's time (16:56) is the 3rd fastest of the year. Seems as though both are over their early-season injuries. Catholic League title will likely come down to LaSalle and O'Hara. Based solely on times so far, LaSalle would win 1-2-3-4-13 (23) to O'Hara's 5-6-7-8-9 (35). Championship race is on October 20.

Re: T&F Recruiting Target for 2013

Here's a further update on Coyle.

Coming back from injury, he got beaten back to 4th place at last week's Philadelphia Catholic League XC championship, as Cardinal O'Hara won the title with 17 to LaSalle 48. Here's the top 15 from that race:

Philadelphia Catholic League XC Championship 10/20/12

1 Savage, Dan 12 Cardinal Ohara 15:56.00
2 Pitone, Ernie 12 Cardinal Ohara 16:00.00
3 Jame, Kevin 10 Cardinal Ohara 16:08.00
4 coyle, Tom 12 Lasalle 16:20.00

14 Montgomery, Kevin 12 Bonner/Prendie 17:03.00
15 Pastore, Drew 10 Cardinal Ohara 17:10.00

However, in today's PIAA District 12 championship (which includes all Philadelphia Catholic and Public league schools), Coyle rebounded by winning the individual title by 5 seconds. O'Hara won the team title with a 2-3-4-5-6 total of 20. LaSalle was second, going 1-8-9-10-12 for 40 points. LaSalle's Andrew Stone -- allegedly interested in Villanova -- was 9th. Here's the top 15 finishers:
