Villanova discussion at Sixers game last night

PDN article by Bob Cooney.

Couple highlights:
  1. I thought I had leveled off after the emotion of the last 4-5 days, but reading that Curtis Sumpter attended the championship game really affected me. A lot of highs and lows of the early years of the Jay Era are captured in Curtis' career. Along with many others, he deserves a piece of this championship. Very happy that he's doing well with the Sixers.
  2. Alvin Gentry on Dante and Villanova: "I look at Dante and I just see a player that is totally what Villanova is about. He is tough. He is selfless. We can ask him to do anything, to guard anyone, to play any position. Every team can use a player like that."

Big shot during the game

that not many of talked about is early 2nd half Carolina goes up 7 early and looks like they were ready to go on a run like have against so many other teams in this tourney. Brunson comes comes down and nails a 3 and cuts it to 4. It was a huge shot to not let the game get away. I know he didn't play a ton bc we rode Booth, and rightfully so, but that was a big big shot.

Enough with the Carolina Sour Grapes

Had to hit Charlotte following Houston for business reasons. Talk about a bad vibe. For every one congratulatory Tar Heel (I'm proudly wearing Villanova shirts), there are two bitter powder blue fatalists that truly believe the NCAA conspired to keep the National Title away from UNC as punishment for the scandal. I mean they really believe this. It's now 48 hours removed from the emotion of Monday night and some people are still clinging to the notion that the game was fixed.

I admit I have used the term "phantom travel call" when describing the 2005 UNC game, but I never thought the game was fixed. This is a whole different level of conspiracy theory going on here.

I was emailed a post from someone that is a subscriber to their board. This sort of says it all:

"I broke down the game film over a few hours today. 16 net points given to Nova from no-calls or indisputably wrong calls based on the video. This does not count the following possession's result if the defense was able to get set after the play.
In 25 and change years of doing this, the worst I have seen against us is 12 points at Duke, and we won anyway (2006, their senior night), and for us was 15 points vs Vermont early in the 2004-2005 season.
No, I don't have a comprehensive spreadsheet, just the max results, sorry. I wish I did the work now too.
Not sure I will be able to take CBB seriously anymore after this obvious punishment for the ongoing investigation.
Blew them out in the championship game, but lost anyway. Yeah, screw this 'sport'.
I think I'll stick to my own team I coach, and not bother with these $$ and political based shams anymore."

If.

Just want to share my favorite poem that resonates with how I'm feeling about this team:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son.

VU Luminaries in Houston

I know of the VUSports.com Legends that were in Houston, but what high profile Villanova alums, friends of the program and fans were in Houston this weekend (from sport, media, business, industry, academia, etc):

I know of:
Rollie, '85 team, Davis Bros., Tim Thomas, Kyle Lowry, Kerry Kittles, Jill Biden and others but who else?

Chirs Geysens?

Admiral John Fallon?

(sorry if some of these have been mentioned in other threads)

Georgetown

know were basking in the glory of the nice win but some sort of funny news out of Georgetown...

They just landed a 25 year old 5 ft 10 PG who was in the army the past few years. In 2010, this kid was going to walk on at NC A&T but either decided against it or didn't make the team.

It's also unsure if this is just a walk on, but the Georgetown board seems to think he'll be a scholarship player.

Nothing against the probable fine young man but if this is Georgetown's answer at the guard position, they may have a bigger problem.

Five Best Title Games of the 64 Game Era

Ted Keith over at Sports Illustrated gives a thumbnail narrative of those five games here (link also below). Interesting though I am not sure he realized it -- each features at least one Big East team.

Hopefully the UNC crowd won't see the article, they might think it is a conspiracy and petition to have it rewritten...with a different ending.

Final Play - Ringtones

I've created an audio file from the TBS Broadcast, the International Broadcast and Fannon's final call and turned each into a ringtone for myself. If you want a copy of the files, I've linked them below:

If you have an iPhone, I've added instructions below for how to turn these files into ringtones. If you have an android, you should be able to just copy any of the files to your phone and set it as your ringtone.
