Team Final Scrimmage at Life Center

Got out today for the scrimmage in Burlington NJ today. A lot of talent on teams like Team Takeover, Team Melo, Jersey Shore Warriors, Team Final and the Albany City Rocks. The main event was the game between Takeover and Final that was loaded with talent on the floor. DJ, Harvey, Kris Lykes, Lonnie Walker, Cam Reddish, Daron Russell etc. but my man stole the show scoring 14 of his teams first 16pts en route to 25pt 11reb 3blk effort to lead his team to a 64-53 win over Takeover. He scored in a variety of ways that included a 18foot jumper from the top of the key, a face up jumper from the baseline a jump hook, two and one finishes, a couple of dunks and 7-8 from the FT line. He played extremely well as he did in a much easier contest that Final had earlier in the day when they beat Team Melo by 30pts. Kris Lykes was good and is super quick but he is VERY SMALL!!! He might be 5-5 if he's lucky as when he stood next to Fatz, who is 5-10, he was much smaller. They actually went at and it was pretty much a standoff. Lonnie started out slow but finished pretty well with a strong 2nd half where I think he had all 12 of his points. Cam Reddish was solid today knocking a couple threes and taking it hard to the cup a few times where he finished or went to the line and knocked down FT's. DJ Harvey was virtually non -existent today. I almost wouldn't have even realized he was out there if I didn't see him standing in front of me. A real disinterested effort today IMO.

As far as other players, I liked seeing today, Sam Iorio (Jersey Shore) is a player as is Daron "Fatz"Russell. He is basically the only point guard that Final has on the roster and he shouldered the load like a champ in each game. You could see how much smoother the team ran when he had the ball in his hands.

Same old Nova team...

...except this roster is poorly constructed as we no longer have a power forward to help on the glass. We also do not have a backup Center. Reynolds is not ready to compete at this level.

Same Ochefu. Does not play well against legit frontcourts. The 6'8" Gill scored on him at will. Daniel still not able to score at the rim when another big is contesting him. He's flicking layups from his hip.

Same Arch. Ineffective offensively against legit backcourts. Struggles to guard. Lost Perrantes a couple times and Perrantes nailed daggers as a result.

I was impressed with Jenkins today. He played smart and made the shots he needs to make for a team that runs the risk of starting him at power forward. He stretched the floor.

Same Nova team with missed layups against good teams. We lost the game on the series where we finally got some repeated offensive boards/opportunities but missed all the 2nd and 3rd chances. UVA came down and scored, gut wrenching swing.

The worst part is that we played as good as we possibly could play and still lost. If we played them again it's not like Arch or Brunson would be more of a factor on both ends of the floor. It's not like Ochefu would alter Gill's shots and slow him down. It's not like we would shoot better from 3 point range. We actually made some shots.

We are extremely limited given what we have discovered about our frontcourt and what we already know about our backcourt. Ochefu has not improved, Reynolds is not ready. Arch and Brunson not able to handle guards like Brogdon or Hield or Woodard, etc.

My expectations are officially tempered and my fingers will be crossed in the NCAA tourney with the prayer that we shoot completely lights out from 3 point range as this would provide our only chance to go far.

Final Four Gear

I was at the FF but never got around to buying any official FF gear.

The lines were either too long - or I didn't want to carry it around all day.

Has anyone seen a site selling Final Four gear? I cannot find one anywhere. There was some pretty good stuff - I wanted to get - has to be on sale somewhere right??

BTW - Speaking of lines. I could not believe people in line to buy gear during all 3 games. Especially during the Championship Game - a line 20 people deep to buy gear - while the game is going on!!!

Did You Know The Shot Would Go In?

i could watch that play 1000 times and likely will. Arch and Ochefu did everything exactly right. And Arch could have played hero ball and taken the shot himself.

But he set up the best pure shooter for a 23 footer he could step into. And Kris Jenkins will make that a good percentage of the time. When he rose for the shot, I knew it but couldn't believe it.

How about Jay saying "bang" when the shot was in the air? True Philly guy channeling former Sixers radio man Steve Fredericks.

Side note: Grant Hill is a little bland at times but he made two great points for the common fan. He said Nova cannot zone UNC after they got a bucket early in the second half. And when the final play was happening, he yelled out "Jenkins!" When he crossed half court.

Our big man is a smart man

From my seat in Madison Square Garden, watching the Cats at the end of the championship game, I had a perfect view of Archie slipping and nearly falling right in front of our bench with about 3 seconds left, allowing the Seton Hall defenders to swarm him. As soon as it happened I realized that Archie slipped on the sweat left by our team as they stood on the court listening to Jay lay out his last second plan. I bitched about it the rest of the night because I've seen it happen before, although it never cost us a game.

So when Danny Ochefu grabbed the mop from that little kid in front of the Carolina bench on Monday night and proceeded to mop the floor like he was prepping it for varnish, I turned to my wife and told her that Archie was gonna take the ball right over that spot, and that Ochefu was just making sure there would not be another slip up. Pretty cool move by Dan.

Championship Parade photos

My son and I got to ride on the double decker bus through the parade with the other members of the media and he got an entire gallery of images that I thought many of you might enjoy! He will be taking orders for prints too if there are any you'd like prints of. It was an amazing experience to see 70,000 strong out on Market Street to celebrate the title and something I will never forget!

Master's First Tee

Couple of guys in V hats standing right behind the players where the righty's tee off. Love it. It's everywhere! Yesterday, walking through Target, this chick looks up at me from where she's sitting, and flashes a HUGE smile at me. So far, just your standard Saturday afternoon stuff. Then she puts up the V and I throw it back. I'm wearing my golf pullover and I notice she's got a Villanova sweater on too. Oh. Still cool though.

National champions schedule shirt

By any chance, have any of you bought this shirt in an XL but don't want it for any reason (it doesn't fit, etc.)?

Aside from the shirts the players wore right after they won, it's the best one I've seen, but it's sold-out everywhere ...

If you have one in an XL that you don't want, please e-mail me at jyannacone@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

The 2005 "Phantom Walk"

As fans of the National Champion men's basketball team there is no reason to look back at past seasons however the gobber fans fron UNC who are still complaining about the conspiracy among the referees to deny their team the victory against Villanova should watch the below video of the game changing bad call (as acknowledged by the 3 CBS post game analysts) still remembered as the "phantom walk".
