Live Feed: NJ title game - 8 PM

Live from Trenton, this should be an interesting one tonight. I just read that the game will feature six international players, from three different continents. Roselle is coming a remarkable 103-34 semi-final win against Paulsboro, and should be a 10-15 point favorite this evening.

They feature: Isaiah Briscoe, South Carolina-bound F Chris Silva, 6'4" G, rising junior Matt Bullock, and 6'10 super frosh Naz Reid

I saw Pope John play this season. Cuse-bound 6'9" Moustapha Diagne has an old school game - he's massive, and has a good back to the basket game. He's originally from Senegal, and looks like he's about 25 years old. Pope John (Sparta) came out of nowhere on the state level, in the past three years, thanks to recruiting. Lots of talent around Diagne as well.

Next Year's NCAA Tournament - Hypothetical

First weekend sites in the east are NYC (Brooklyn) and Providence - have to think we'll be good enough that we'll be at one of those sites next year. Now, let's assume that we have a copycat year and roll through our mid-major league next year as we did this year... ending up as a #1 or #2 seed. Does the committee dare put us in Philly given the crap they are getting on the Dayton front this year? I personally don't think that they would.

First & foremost ...

Thanks to Jay & his staff. Thanks to Darrun & JVP for helping produce the best, most enjoyable season in VU history. All our players & coaches were 1st class all season long. Ryan's handling of the Gibbs Incident was just plain CLASS. His ballhandling, A/TO ratio, shooting, all improved. Hart's improvement, especially his shooting, have begun his ascendancy to star status. DO improved, but I will continue to knock his lack of killer-instinct. I got a smile when he got into a mini-tussle and ripped a rebound away from a NC St. player late. THAT is what I look for ... "MY BALL! MY BASKET! GET THE OUTTA MY WAY OR I"M A TATTOOING YOUR FACE WITH THE BALL WHEN I SLAM THIS MUTHA..." The rest of the team excelled at filling various roles on a 33-3 team. It's unfortunate we lost to an inferior team, but I have said all year consistently ... when our shooters are off, we need some big bodies to help DO. Love Chef, but too "nice", & love JVP. but really, he, at 6'5, was overmatched by opponents who are heavier & taller. Maybe Markus Kennedy could have helped if still here. I've said all year, why not throw Reynolds several quality minutes a game ... talented enough? ... not quite, but his stature & willingness to bang is to my liking. Hope we can add one more big banger, a juco, whatever for next year. Again, thank you Seniors & best of luck in your future endeavors. All have a good spring/summer & looking forward to next season.

Go Cats! 33-3, 62-8 over past 2 seasons, 2 BE regular season champs, 1 BET Champ, #2 in AP before NCAA Tourney ... thanks soooo much for the plethora of memories ... to be continued ...

Before the NCAA tournament.......

Fox aired the sit-down with Jay and Gus Johnson........Gus asked Jay about staying where he was at with coaching, and Jay had an answer that intrigued me into thinking about this question.....First, Jay's answer......He said he couldn't see himself coaching anywhere but at VU, but he didn't rule out something else ( like the NBA)........
That led me to the question......Which I didn't want to post for fear of jinxing the team........If you knew that the only way that Jay would leave coaching VU, was if he won a national championship......Would you rather have the Nat. Championship or would you rather have Jay for as long as he can coach???
Now don't forget the 10 out of 11 yrs of dancing.......And not any next in line coach available

What Jay MUST do moving forward

After watching another 2nd round loss in which our guys played timid, had that "dear in the headlights" look from the opening tip, I am not more convinced our conference will not prepare us enough for the NCAA Tournament and Jay must, must improve OOC schedule. I'm not saying we're a mid-major conference, you can put whatever term you want on it, but one thing is abundantly clear: the teams in our league do not bring the athleticism, strength and the tenacity that the P5 conferences bring. If this is going to change, Jay must do whatever it takes to build us a tougher OOC schedule.

We didn't have this problem in the old BE. We were more than prepared from a mental perspective. Nothing scared them and they more hungry - like sharks on bait hungry - just like NCST was and UConn last year. That's how it always was when we were in the old BE. The conference was a bitch, and you needed to bring it every night. We may lose in some years because our teams just weren't good enough, or weren't playing well towards the end of the season, but when we had talented focused squads, we were prepared for the Dance. This team had the talent, focus and was playing their best ball. Just didn't have enough tests during the season. I don't care what people say about next year about the BE, at best, it will be the same, and that isn't good enough to get a team ready for March.

Looking back at this past season, Syracuse was our best true test because when Chris McCollaugh played, they were a tournament quality team with size, strength and tenacity. Put the sanctions aside, had that Frosh stayed healthy, they were tournament quality. Illinois, Michigan stunk and VCU is not the test we needed. Good team, but mid-major conference. This is what needs to happen going forward:

Attempt to set up home-and-homes with the best teams we can get from the ACC, B1G, etc. I know this isn't easy and I know it's hard to know who will be good or not, but start with the obvious teams - Kent, Mich State, Duke, UNC, AZ, Louisville, etc. I'm even open to 2 for 1s because we need these games badly. These games also get us more exposure - a side benefit for sure - but CBS or ESPN would pick these up. If we must eliminate the Big 5, then do it! I know this is controversial, but this is about our program being great in March. Those programs are not keeping up (except Temple, perhaps) and playing Penn in February is a colossal WASTE OF TIME. If the B5 is preventing us from scheduling the way we MUST in this new college athletics world, then it may have to be a victim of circumstances. Sorry people, but this is business, not personal and old traditions have been dying all over the country because of realignment - the Big 5 may have to suffer as well. Jay needs to schedule one of these games as late as possible - February would be great. I know that won't be easy, but maybe dumping the Big 5 gives us better flexibility to do so. I am more convinced than ever that games in November on some random island or city are almost useless in preparing a team for March. Sure they help RPI (see what that meant to our league), but true road tests vs. the best is what we need. Cuse last year @ Cuse was an example of that and how'd we do? Red flag right there when you look back.
Look, I know this isn't an exact science, and I'm sure many will find contrary views, but we've been trying the other way for two years of this new league, and we look scared when we step on the court vs. Big State U from the P5 conferences (UConn counts last year). You guys can debate size, lack of it, our guard skills, etc., but how we schedule going forward MUST change in order for us to be prepared to make a run in March.

Finally Setting in

After returning from Pittsburgh and going to class again, the fact that we lost is just starting to hit me. Yes I'm upset and can't stomach watching any more tournament games yet, but even more than that, I'm thankful for this team and this great season. Other than the loss, this was one of the best weekends of my years as a student at Nova. Another thing that hit me is how lucky I am to be a Wildcat. I have friends and family at schools who will never even get to experience a tournament appearance. This team will be back in the dance in 358 days with even more to prove and I'll be there again to cheer them on.

Booth & Ennis

What if Booth and Ennis swapped minutes last night? Booth gets 30 and Ennis gets 14 - which is what their respective talent levels should demand. What if Booth gets 12 shots and Ennis gets 4 - which is what is appropriate based on their respective efficiency levels?

I wonder if we'd still be in the winners circle.

You learn all you need to about players in games like last night - not in games against Providence in February. Phil remained himself - calm, confident, aggressive, smart. It was clear from the beginning of the game that Ennis couldn't compete at this level. We were barely to the first TV timeout and he was 0-7 or 1-8. He's had a nice little season. Far better than I would have predicted. Even though I question how Jay distributed minutes, I trust him enough that he'll see that Ennis is better suited for a "heat check" role off the pine next season. If he comes out and makes a shot or two every couple of games, great; if not, he shouldn't be out there hunting his shot every possession, disrupting our ball movement.

Your position on scheduling Notre Dame?

I count myself among those that would like to schedule Notre Dame - every year if we could. Mike Brey has publicly stated he values the rivalry between our two schools and would love to continue playing us. It would appear there is significant opposition to this on the VU side (at least among fans). There is so much to benefit us, not the least of which is to present us with a challenging opponent.

I know the story about giving Brey recruiting access to the Philadelphia market (which we can't control so why bother), but it seems to me the benefits outweigh the negatives. We need strong OOC games so why not ND?

Thoughts?

Need to get this off my chest

So many emotions going on right now. After a broken remote control, too many drinks to help me fall asleep and a morning under my belt, I need a post to get this off my chest. I'm officially over the hating ESPN and the national media. All that did for the past 6 months was distract me from one of the best seasons of any sport I have ever enjoyed. Villanova basketball and Villanova itself means as much to me as anything other than my family and I couldn't be prouder of both. Every Sunday morning I do work at Starbucks and at least three quarters of the time I sit wearing a Nova hoodie pounding away on my laptop. Inevitably at least one or two people come up to me who are alumni or whose children go or went there and we have an instant connection and talk about the team or the campus or whatever. I was there this morning wearing my usual hoodie and three other people came in wearing nova shirts. Every one of us made eye contact, gave a head nod, and without saying anything both knew that our program is above a bad loss the first weekend of the tournament. The season our team just had may be once in a life-time and while I knew it was special going through it, I could have enjoyed it more. That will be different next year and I already have lofty expectations for these guys again. There is no other team I would rather root for and there is no man I would rather have being the ambassador of my alma matre than Jay Wright. The guy makes men out of boys, represents all the values of Villanova and is someone I am proud to say I am at least somewhat associated with (even if it's just through my donation checks at this point until my 2 year old is old enough to hopefully attend). My freshmen year was his first at nova and what the program has become in these 14 years was unthinkable to the 19 year old me hoping to sneak into the tournament all those years. Or just somehow sneak out a win over the likes of Uconn of Syracuse or even St. Joes. The loss hurts, but the ride was better. And to top it off I got a notification that my Big East Championship shirt shipped yesterday and one thing you can be sure of, is I'll still be wearing it proudly next Sunday around town...
