Recruits

Did anyone hear the announcers on Fox Sports 1 say that Nova may be getting their best recruiting classes ever over the next couple years? They said they will have to wait and see which I like since players shouldn't be crowned until they have done something but it something exciting to look forward to. But can anyone remember a more promising time for committed recruits?

The board already has stuff on Adrianna Hahn (2015) from Wilmington. Got to see her in the Play by Play Classic..she put on a show. Three pt shooter with unlimited range, ball handler, quick moves..only 5-7 but strong and rebounds, plays D, ..

If your from PA you have to know about Kelly Jekot (2016).. athletic, shooter, post, shot blocker,,all around.. a major get for Nova. With Hahn thats two Top 100 or even Top 50 national players depending on what poll you look at

For 2015 they also have Bridget Herlihy http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/high-school/post/_/id/33895/braintrees-bridget-herlihy-commits-to-villanova and Grace Stant http://hoopgroup.com/headquarters-blog/shore-conference-basketball-2/grace-stant-picks-villanova/

Both seem like perfect fits for Villanova and bring size, athleticism, skill, etc.. I have not seen them play but the word is excellent...

For 2016 they have Mary Gedaka http://articles.philly.com/2014-12-22/sports/57284626_1_lisa-gedaka-mary-gedaka-villanova (any old timers remember mom..her coach?) and Raven James http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/recruiting-insider/wp/2014/06/09/paul-vi-guard-raven-james-commits-to-villanova/ ... I have not seen either of them play but again the word is excellent..

With the way the team is playing after getting healthy and these recruits on the horizon ts a good time to be a fan of the Lady Wildcats!

Jay Williams on Mike and Mike

Interesting. Actually made it a point this am to call out Big East fans who claim that he's never watched any Big East games. He essentially said that he lives in New York and watches a ton of Big East play, and that the haters should stop. He claims to love Jay Wright and the way their guards play, but "just doesn't see it" if they play NC State.

I don't really care what Jay Williams thinks, but I thought it was notable that he'd make it a point to come out so strongly -- on ESPN's national morning radio program, no less - against the anti-ESPN sentiment that is prevalent among BE fans.

OT: Kyle Lowry

Lowry had 20, 11 and 10 last night in his second triple double of the year for Toronto, who has been struggling recently. However, they reached 40 wins quicker than any Toronto team in history.

Also found this tidbit interesting...Lowry became the first Raptor to record consecutive 100 steal seasons since...Alvin Williams did it in three consecutive seasons from 2000-2003.

No Matter What Happens

No matter what happens in the tourny, I am real proud of this team, their accomplishments this year and how they represent the University that I love so much. I feel very fortunate to be a Villanova alumni. I am hopeful that we can have a special tournament run but either way this team needs to be applauded for the season that they have given us all thusfar

NC St vs. LSU

Let's face it, we'll get past the Leopards and get into the second round so this is where the tournament truly starts. The 8/9 game is one that we should win, but we can also lose.

Purely from a statistical standpoint, here are some numbers.

LSU: They play very fast as they average around 71 possessions per game which is 9th most in the country, but their 1.03 points per possession is pretty mediocre. LSU averages 45.6% from the field but only 33% from 3, which means they shoot very well from 2 (as evidenced by their two bigs, who have taken the majority of their shots and they shoot roughly 51% from the field) From 3, they have one guy who has taken a lot of 3's and has only made 31%, but their two other guards shoot 36-37% so they can make them. Ball pressure is key because LSU averages over 14 turnovers a game, which is 27th worst in the country. LSU likes to gamble and get steals, then have the bigs to back it up as they average 7 steals per game and over 6 blocks per game.

Though they collect a lot of rebounds, it's attributed more to their fast pace rather than how good they are at rebounding. (EX: Both of their bigs average ~34 minutes a game, but collect around 10 rebounds per game. Ochefu, in 24 minutes a game, collects 9 rebounds a game.)

They essentially are a 6 man rotation but will play up to 8, though against UK, the 7th and 8th men only played a combined 8 minutes.

LSU plays at a fast pace, but are not very efficient. If we run with them, we'll likely need to score 80 to win, mostly due to pace of play and not bad defense.

NC ST: Essentially the exact opposite of LSU...they have 3 guards / wings who play 30 minutes a game, then a bevy of other players who play under 20 minutes a game, including most of their bigs, but also have an 8 man rotation.

The Wolfpack play at a slow pace, but are efficient at doing so as they average 1.08 points per possession, 65th best in the country. They shoot 36% from 3 and take around 18 a game. They rebound well, but they are better offensive rebounders than defensive rebounders so boxing out will be crucial. NC ST plays a very conservative game as they only average 4 steals per game, but also swat shots away at just over 5 per game. The antithesis of LSU, they don't turn the ball over much at all.

Their achilles heel is defense, as it's not quite swiss cheese, but it's not great so we should be able to drive and score on them, though during their last 8 games (6-2) it's been a lot better.

Whomever we play, we should beat, but both of these teams have played top teams before and won't be scared. They'll think they can win and play to win. We'll need our A game from here on out...

Comparison

Georgia

Everyone is going nuts over UCLA, but honestly, how is Georgia even in the field? They have 9 top 100 wins, OK I guess. However, they have 0 top 50 wins and 4 of their top 100 wins are against teams ranked between 90-100. They have just 2 wins over teams in the field, and those 2 wins are against the same team in #57 Ole Miss, who oh by the way is in the First Four! So Georgia basically has 0 wins over teams currently in the field of 64. How is that a resume worthy of an at large?

Their RPI is a misleading 37, with an SOS in the 30s that was obviously greatly helped by playing Kentucky twice. Maybe the fact that they only lost to Kentucky by 11 and 8 played a factor? Not sure how this resume is better than Temple's ...
