Anybody Else Get Mental This Time Of Year?

I will admit, although I am a college hoops junkie, when Villanova isn't in the tournament, which thankfully doesn't happen a lot, I obviously don't care as much. When Villanova is in the tournament though, it almost becomes an obsession. I can't concentrate at work and spend the majority of the day on message boards or college hoops sites. When I get home, same thing.

When I think Villanova has a legit shot to win it all, like this year, it gets even worse. I love this time of year, there is nothing like it, but this can't be healthy! Ha! When it is over I feel like I can breath again.

I am also a pretty big hockey fan (GO ISLES!) but during this time of year the NHL might as well not even exist. I don't pay attention AT ALL, at least not until April. Total backburner.

Please tell me I am not the only one who experiences this......

All Eyes on Nick Lindner

Lafayette's point guard plays 30 minutes per game and has a nice 5.4 to 1.9 average A/T ratio. He's fairly quick from what I remember of the Patriot League championship game against American. He's listed at 5'11", 165 lbs. Needless to say he will be under a world of pressure with Ennis and others stalking his every move.

Big East Next Year...

...will be even stronger...

Nova - likely very similar to this year - beat goes on - Arch, Ennis, Chef, Hart, Jenkins, Phil, Brunson, etc.

GTown - Top 25 and NCAA lock - add Govan/Derrickson - lose Smith/Trawick/Hopkins - Peak/Copeland/White one year older - Smith Rivera runs it...

Butler - Lewis replaces Barlow - only lose the big - Dunham/Jones/Scrabasz are back - NCAA team - Top 35

PC - Dunn gone - Henton graduates - right now they have Cartwright/Lindsay/Lewis/Ben/Chukwu - NCAA team

SHU - if they come back - Gibbs/Carrington/Whitehead/Delgado should get them to the tournament - NCAA team

X - lose Dee and Stain - return all else including Reynolds and Bluett - NCAA team

SJ - could be great or horrible - depends who stays and goes and comes

Creighton - rough year - lose a lot

DePaul - transition

Marquette - a year away...

Looks like 6 to the NCAA again to me - with more quality at the top

OT: Another hurdle or opportunity for Fox & FS1 in the new age of pay TV?

I've been following all of the new announcements regarding content providers like HBO, Viacom and others beginning to offer access to their content direct, and bypass the cable and satellite TV providers. Now, Apple and Sony are going to offer WebTV bundles of 25 or so channels for much less money. I noticed Apple with have ESPN as part of the initial bundle. If I'm Fox, I do whatever I can to bundle FS1, 2 and part of any negotiations with Apple, Sony, etc. This will be a new viewing paradigm one where there will be a reshuffling of the deck as far as channels and preferences. If Apple and Sony offer a 25 channel bundle for 25-35 bucks a month, it will sell like crazy. Fox must not let ESPN be the only 100% sports content provider on these new WebTV services.

To me, it's an opportunity to level the playing field in this new TV viewing paradigm, or fall further behind the leader.

Big East Tournament..

I think us winning the Big East Tournament was a really big deal. I think it's important to win something that you think is tangible and to win something that other "on the outside" thinks is tangible. Last year we won the BE regular season. I guarantee you Jay and the Davis Center think that is more tangible than winning the BET. Fortunately or unfortunately, the outside doesn't see it as tangible and sees the BET as tangible. Teams hang banners for winning their league tournaments and it means more to most than a regular season title.

This year in winning the BET, we established a level of credibility with the pundits by winning the BET. It really helped our national brand and it helped our league's brand. We were in a lot more of the "who can beat Kentucky" conversations after winning the BET than before we did.

Now we can really break through by doing damage in the NCAA. Here's how I look at it:

Lose in the 64 or the 32 - undo a lot of the good we did by winning the BET

Lose in the Sweet 16 - keep the brand gain we achieved through winning the BET - nothing more or less

Lose in the Elite 8 - slight bump to our BET enriched brand

Make the Final 4 - enhanced brand

Make the Final Game - brand enriched significantly

Win the NC - off the charts!

WINNER: 2015 Student Tourney Trip Challenge

This year I found the entries to be excellent for the 2015 Student Tourney Trip Challenge. I want to thank all the students (9) who submitted an entry. You all should be commended for your support of Villanova and the Men's basketball program.

This year's entries came from these students:

rachel41293
njberger
VUmander
THE HOPE15
jstamour1024
m.antonovich284
Dvel93

One of the requirements that seems to trip up many applicants is the 200 words or less limit for a submission. Following instructions is critical. I wish all the entries had conformed to this word limit as we had some of the best submission for the contest that I have seen in the many years I have been offering up this opportunity. You all have such great passion for Villanova and I hope as you graduate this love of Villanova stays with you. The VU Sports board is a great way to stay connected to the team, the school and Villanovans.

This years winner is njberger. Contact me via email: jerryquinn_us@yahoo.com

Since we had so many great posts, I would like to award a consolation prize of $50 to both Nova15 & rachel41293. Please contact me so I can make arrangements.

Thanks again for Eric in supporting this effort via VU Sports and to the many alums who have contacted me to contribute to the cause.
