Strong and Clear Counseling For Athletes

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...arrested-sex-assault-charge-article-1.2600191

What a shame! I've met Oakman before. He played basketball and football at Pennwood HS. He also assisted his high school coach, Clyde Jones, at Philly Point Guard basketball camps held in several location in the Philly area. Mark Perner, a Philly area sports writer, was a co sponsor of these camps. The former Univ. of DE coach, Monte Ross, also was involved in these camps. Oakman had some issues at PSU but seemed to have gotten past those. He had a stellar football career at Baylor, breaking their all time sack record. Now, just before the NFL Draft, he gets charged with sexual assault. Somebody has to counsel these kids about keeping their nose clean.

Oakman allegedly walked home with a women he met at a bar that evening. She left the bar with him consensually. She went into his apartment with him consensually. She went into his bedroom with him consensually BUT, according to her, she did not engage in sex with him consensually. In times past, if a woman had consensually gone into a guys bedroom when both of them had been drinking and they otherwise didn't know each other, the likelihood of her prevailing in a sexual assault charge would be low.

Things have changed! Moreover, a guy in Oakman's position can't even afford to have the allegation made against him, especially in the week leading up to the Draft since even if charges are dropped AFTER THE DRAFT or he is found not guilty AFTER THE DRAFT, his career may be over. In the least, it will have been set back very significantly. Someone needs to be very clearly and regularly counseling these guys about what is not only illegal but also about what is imprudent! I am not here to judge whether or not this woman was sexually assaulted or not. I am commenting solely on the stupidity of players getting themselves into positions where they may get charged with sexual assault, rightly or wrongly.

Size Question

So, next season we have six players at the so-called 4 and 5 positions -- Reynolds, Jenkins, Spellman, Delaney, Painter and presumably Paschall at 6'7". The following season we lose Reynolds but gain Cosby-Roundtree. Given that we've essentially gone with two players at these positions, how do you foresee handling playing time?

OT: Saint Louis University

Was in St. Louis for a wedding this weekend and had an opportunity to drive around Saint Louis University's campus (our hotel was near there).

I have to say - I was very impressed. The campus is very big and the facilities are modern, renovated and fresh. The on-campus stadium (Chaifetz Arena) is very new - completed in 2008 -- and looks huge from the outside. From one of the groomsmen in the wedding (a grad), the building holds more than 10k for basketball with the potential for more. Around 13,000 total students there, with nearly 9,000 undergrads and the rest grad students and law students.

Academically, the school is a national, second tier university now in US News/World Report, and with the potential for further upward movement.

St. Louis as a city gets a bad rap (much of it justified based on some neighborhoods), but SLU's campus is in a fairly nice area of the city with a ton of open space, and is in close proximity to downtown and the Busch Stadium area. Also right next door to Pappy's BBQ - if you ever go to St Louis, make sure you stop there...unbelievable pulled pork and ribs that they smoke right on the street.

I've been skeptical of Saint Louis University as a Big East member for some time, and I'm not suggesting the Big East should, or would, expand in the near future. But if it does, I came away thinking that SLU would be a terrific addition. Good academic profile, and ready-made infrastructure in both the brand new basketball facilities and a large and excited student population. It isn't surprising that SLU is at the top of many BE fan wish-lists, and it should be.

OT: Villanova MBB mentioned last night at mass on Gtown campus

Last night I attended the 7:30 pm mass at Dahlgren Chapel on the Georgetown camps as I have for the past 2 years with my wife. Over this time, I have come to see many other Villanovans attend this regularly. A parish mass can never match the energy and music of a college mass.

As we walked thru the Healy building, we could see that the chapel was already standing room only and speakers had been set up outside. This is usually not the case for the 7:30 mass. The space is about 1/3 the size of the Villanova Church and is typically packed. At this point, my wife and I sensed that something was going on/had happened to a student.

Something sad did happen on Sunday AM. You can read about it here. I have not seen any more details about the cause of the student's death but tragic just the same. I have never seen Dahlgren so filled with people.

When it came time for the homily, the priest who was not a Jesuit but is in the regular rotation for Sunday student masses at Georgetown, provided a great message about humility and being there for one another. He invoked the story of our own Fr. Rob and his homily to the Villanova Basketball team on Holy Thursday. He asked the congregation what Fr. Rob had the team do....and I screamed from the back of the church still in the courtyard : "He had them wash each other's feet". I have never yelled out anything during a homily....but it just came out. I got a lot of looks for sure but it did not bother me.

This priest then went on to talk about how our Villanova team is a great example of how they are selfless and there for one another. He used our team and chaplain as living examples of faith in his message to the students, parents and others gathered for the 7:30pm mass.

Needless to say but the unexpected death of the Gtown LAX student is a tragedy for sure. When I heard this homily last night, I just wanted to share it with the group. Please keep the Blatz family in your thoughts/prayers.

Three weeks in...

...other than "the shot" what are things you have picked up watching the replays that are your favorites....me....
1. Jim Nance with the lights out and gladiator type music playing saying in One Shining Moment "One more game to go for the National Championship!" as that column from the scoreboard comes down to the floor right before tip. Chills.
2. Bridges skipping out of the tunnel onto the floor through the smoke and with the fire torches flaming at the start in One Shining Moment (ik weird)
3. Arch looking like a kid on Christmas morning, licking his lips and then erupting in pure joy as he watches the final play in One Shining Moment on the giant scoreboard...

Wojo and the Ellensons, A Question

News of Wally Ellenson's status with the Marquette basketball program has roiled through Milwaukee and Wisconsin basketball circles for the past 48 hours. Those unfamiliar with the details can catch up at link below:

FTL:https://painttouches.com/2016/04/22/how-will-wally-ellenson-leaving-affect-marquette/

He will continue to receive an athletic scholarship, but it is a track and field scholarship (he is a high jumper). The implicit rational is that Wojo needs a 13th scholarship to attract a #4 and Wally is a #2/#3 at best, so Wojo yanked the scholly. 2 sport athletes are uncommon but not unheard of, so I assume the problem is not which sport underwrites his education, but rather the conflict over seasons...correct?

EYBL Indy

Tonight, Chris Lykes with 16 pts 3 steals. Lykes is tearing up EYBL so far. Averaging 16ppg. No other player on his STACKED team is averaging in double figures. Harvey at about 9.5. Oh and Chris is shooting almost 60% from the field ( yes 60%)and 40% from 3. Again, this is on a team with all D1 kids. Amazing start for him.

Dada had 4 pts and 3 rebounds tonight.

Cam Reddish with 20pts 8 rebs

Walker with 12

Wow would I love a Lykes, Walker backcourt.

regarding the 2017 offers

In terms of offers for 2017
there are two offers to guys who will really only be brought in at Villanova if Spellman and/or Brunson were to go pro early:
Mohammed Bamba
Trevon Duval

The primary wing target is:
Lonnie Walker

The primary PG target is:
Chris Lykes

The primary interior player target gave a VERBAL:
Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree

These wings/forward have also been offered:
Kevin Knox
Brian Bowen
D.J. Harvey
Hameir Wright
Brandon Randolph
Justin Smith

Knox and Bowen are studs that the Cats would take if they want in.
Smith and Randolph were offered recently based on how they have played in the Spring on top of what the Cats already knew about them. Smith is friendly with Jalen Brunson.
Hameir Wright was a Maryland lean because he is tight with Kevin Huerter from AAU and elsewhere - but the national championship keeps the Cats in the mix here.
D.J. Harvey is still in play. Guys like Jordan Tucker and Jermaine Samuels remain in the mix but don't hold "offer offers".
