Is Villanova in Delaware County?

My wife is not a Villanova grad but grew up in Delaware County…Ridley.

Yesterday I was showing my kids video and pictures from the parade and my wife starts pumping her fist and joking about how great it is to see the city of Philadelphia celebrate a DelCo championship.

My immediate response: Villanova is not in DelCo, it’s in Montgomery County.

My wife angrily told me I was wrong and accused me of mainline snobbery while lecturing me about how Radnor, New Town Square etc. were all DeLCo. (which I knew)

However, in my mind…I seem to remember getting off at Villanova /St. David exit and driving towards Villanova going by a sign that says “Montgomery County Line”…yes/no?

I can’t seem to find a definitive answer online. Villanova’s Wikipedia page references that it “straddles the line” between the two counties.

Who is right?
Does my wife get to tease her hair up and celebrate a DelCo victory?
Or, do I get to pop my collar in honor of Montgomery County?

Dylan Painter a pleasant surprise ...

... this evening at the Donofrio in Conshy.
He scored 30 points and did a great job rebounding and blocking shots against a team that featured Marcus Little and Lamar Stevens in the paint. It was physical inside and Painter didn't back down.

Post Game Interview:

VUSports: Tough loss for your team but you were really getting after it out there ...

Painter: It was a tough game. We just didn't make the plays that we needed to down the stretch. We were up about seven with two minutes left but we just didn't make the plays down the stretch.

VUSports: Was this game typical for you in terms of your motor and the way you got after it on the glass?

Painter: Yeah, I try to play as hard as I can every game. Whatever my team needs me to do to try to win - that is what I do.

VUSports: Your shot-blocking was impressive was that also typical?

Painter: I like blocking shots, that is one of my things. Sometimes I get dunked on but that happens when you are a shot-blocker.

VUSports: When do expect to get to campus?

Painter: I still need to talk to them about that. There season has been hectic - well, good hectic. I graduate June 7th so I have to see when they want me to come down.

Q: What was it like watching the National Championship game?

Painter: It was amazing. I was in Germany for the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight and Final Four so I had to follow that on twitter because we couldn't get the live stream but I came home, watched the National Championship and was the most excited I have ever been in my life.

Q: Watching the team that you are going to play for was that a little surreal or?

Painter: Well, they were calling it the best Championship game ever and that is pretty cool and Kris Jenkins is going to go down in history as making one of the biggest shots in basketball history ever and that will be cool to be on the same team as him next year if he doesn't go to the NBA.

Q: When they win though do you feel that it will change the way the team is perceived next year?

Painter: I think Coach Wright does a good job of keeping everyone's head level so I don't think it will change how they prepare for everything. Everything will be the same excpet maybe a little more buzz around campus and around the media. I think inside the actual team it will stay pretty much the same.

Q: Will it change the way teams approach Villanova.

Painter: We are going to have a target on our back so we are going to have to go out and play hard every game.

Q: What have you improved the most on over your Senior season?

Painter: Ever since the season ended I have been trying to work on my footwork. My footwork isn't where it needs to be yet and my overall strength. I have put on about 10 pounds since the end of my Senior season. I am up to 240 now. I want to be about 245 when I get to campus and they said they are going to try to get my body fat down and then I will be 240 but shredded.

VUSports: And how tall are you now.

Painter: 6-10, I haven't been measured in a while and people say I may be 6-11 but last time I was measured I was 6-10.

VUSports: How are you looking forward to matching up against Omari Spellman in practice every day?

Painter: We have been talking a lot lately and having conversations. He say "I am going to dunk on you" and I say "well, I am going to dunk on you too". It is going to be pretty competitive. But on game day we are on the same team.

7 out of 7.....

Here's some stats that you may not have seen that underscore what a great offensive performance we had. I assembled from the 6 ESPN box scores. If we set the bar for a great shooting performance over the 6 game tournament at
  • 50% for 2 point shots
  • 43% for 3 point shots
  • 75% for foul shots
Our top 7 players (based on minutes played) all (well almost all) met or exceeded these levels. The details are:

Player 2 Pt %
D. Ochefu 69.8%
R. Arcidiacono 66.0%
M. Bridges 62.5%
P. Booth 57.1%
K. Jenkins 56.9%
J. Hart 52.9%
J. Brunson 47.1%
Team Total 58.2%

Player 3Pt%
P. Booth 58.3% (corrected)
R. Arcidiacono 61.5%
M. Bridges 42.9% (corrected)
J. Brunson 50.0%
K. Jenkins 48.6%
J. Hart 29.4%
D. Ochefu none taken
Team Total 50.0%

Player FT%
R. Arcidiacono 94.4%
K. Jenkins 90.9%
P. Booth 88.9%
J. Hart 81.3%
M. Bridges 80.0%
J. Brunson 77.8%
D. Ochefu 75.0%
Team Total 81.4%

The only major exception is Josh who had an OK percentage with his 3 point shots. It goes to underscore the difficulties our opponents had when trying to defend us - no weak links, no ability to concentrate on one player without someone else hurting you.

BTW I did not include Reynolds because he had a more limited role in the offense, but his stats were 38% for 2 point shots (at 3 for 8 - and had he made just one of his misses, he would have been at 50%) and 73% for free throws.

Sorry, I wish I knew how to format this better or include a spreadsheet

Other Tidbits from Houston - Random Stuff

1. How bad was the halftime show? A major sporting event and they had some guy on a key board doing the prelude to one shining moment? Really? You have Grammy nominated artist playing all weekend and you have a guy on a keyboard?

2. There was an angry bartender at the Sonesta all weekend, which is a shocker since I am sure between the tips from Nova fans probably could send his first born to college from this weekend. The angry bartender had to be a Temple fan right? Maybe he lost alot of money on the Kansas game?

3. If you ever in Houston the Dish Society is one of the best brunches I have ever had.

4. Eric Eberz and Gary Buchannon were in Houston, which leads me to a question that has been on my mind, three point shooting contest, Eberz, Buchannon or Jenkins?

5 How many times did the scoreboard screw up in Houston, had to be at least 5 or 6?

6. After we thrashed Oklahoma my buddy saw Doug Gottlieb wondering around the terminal like he was lost, he looked confused, kept putitng his hands on his head like he didnt know what was going, wish I had the video.

7. Jay Williams needs two security guards when traveling around Houston, to which my wife asks why does Jay Williams need two security guards around in Houston, 80% of Houston had no idea who Jay Williams is.

8. Took a lot of pictures this weekend, best one I have is Beefer and the Dancing Hat guy, by far.

9. DJ Chaney from the pregame parties was awesome, I highly recommend him for any weddings or Sweet 16 birthdays.

10. Thought it was awesome when Nova Nation gave Allen Iverson a standing O on his induction to the hall of fame, very very cool. Karma.

My Favorite Image from the Tourney

My one favorite image from our Championship run is when Bridges fell on the ball in the last few seconds of the Kansas game to basically secure the victory and a trip to the FF. Here is a link to my favorite image. https://cdn2.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/33..._image/image/49185947/usa-today-9213589.0.jpg

I would love to know what everyone's one favorite image is as well.

Is tonight the night.....

.....when VU finally proposes to the Big 5 that Temple,LaSalle, St. Joseph's(PA) and Penn compete in an annual four-team tournament for the right to play Villanova?

http://www.philadelphiabig5.org/newsfull.php

Would it be in poor taste for Jay to bring along his Naismith Award and put it directly in Martelli's path when Phil goes up to accept his "Big 5 Coach of the Year" award?

Big East basketball not among the top money-makers

http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/20160409/st_refDomain=t.co&st_refQuery=/xCf9750lm6/?Start=1]

Quick, which conference is raking in the most money from the NCAA’s billion-dollar TV contract? Is it the Big East, the home of newly crowned national champion Villanova? Not by a long shot. A great guess would be the Atlantic Coast Conference, the league that filled the Sweet 16 this March and absorbed many of the Big East’s marquee programs a few seasons ago. Wrong. How about the Big 12, the conference that seemingly always puts seven teams in the tourney? Not them either. So which conference received a $29.3-million check from the NCAA’s $200-million basketball fund last spring? The American Athletic Conference, which still has its offices a jump shot away from the Rhode Island State House. The American’s take from the pot was the largest in the country, easily eclipsing the total earned by the Big 10 ($24.5 million) and the Big 12 ($20.1).
