#1 seed in BET and its importance

I dont read everything on here so Im not sure if its been mentioned, but a major reason we want to be the #1 seed in MSG besides the prestige of being 3 time regular season champs is that Seton Hall is probably going to be the #3 seed. A potential semi-final match-up between Xavier and Seton Hall will be a slug fest. I said before that next year Seton Hall is the team that I see as being the team that could dethrone us, and they are really coming together right now. I guarantee they want our scalp in the worst way. Lets let them battle X in the semis and then we can take on the winner in the finals.

People are noticing Nova

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a "Nova #1 in the Country" tee shirt. There is nothing unusual about that because over half of my wardrobe is Nova gear. But, since I didn't know how long we would be #1, I decided to wear the shirt every day when I go out (and yes, I laundered it every night). I used tp get an occasional comment on my gear, but this last few weeks, strangers stopped me several times to talk about Nova. One elderly lady who was probably in her 80's stopped me and told me she has followed Nova since the 1950's and doesn't miss a game on TV. Another guy told me he moved here from California a few years ago and never heard of Nova, but now is a avid fan and he used to be a UCLA fan. I felt like giving him a medal. My sister and brother in law never liked basketball, but now have become tremendous fans even though they don't live near hear. Only a couple of people brought up the supposed "choke" problem in March.

My point in all of this is that the exposure we are getting and will continue to get is really paying off.

wojo stuff ...

from BE Coaches call today:

On his win at Creighton & the upcoming game against 'Nova:
" i think our guys had a terrific defensive effort to hold them to 61 points. I was proud of our competitiveness on the defensive end. It was a very good win for our young group and sets up a huge game against a Villanova team that I think can win a national championship. I have so much respect for the Villanova program, and their kids and the way they play - how fundamentally sound they are and the way they bring it every time they step on the floor."

VUSports:
I am interested in your thoughts on the development of Traci Carter and Haanif Cheatham. How does their improvement since the first time you faced Villanova factor into the game tomorrow?

Wojo:
"The development of Traci and Haani as Freshmen guards in this league has been really good. Both of those kids, from the moment they stepped on campus to where they are now are much improved players. Up until our last game against Creighton, Haani had a stretch where he had three 20 point, Big East games in a row. I don't know how many Freshmen can do that regularly. He has been a guy that we use on the ball, off the ball and he has given us great production in a very efficient manner on the offensive end and also he is our best defender as a Freshman on the perimeter. Obviously Henry Ellenson deserves all the attention that he gets but Haanif Cheatham has had one of the great Freshmen years, at least in Marquette history and he has been a terrific player. Traci has improved immensely since the start of the year. He is the one guy on our team who has the best point guard instincts and does the best job of getting guys the ball when they are open. I think his on-ball defense has improved tremendously and I think he is going to be a really good player in the Big East as he continues to mature and grow."

jay wright quotes ...

Coach Wright comments from BE Coaches media call today:

on Xavier ... and then Marquette:
"a great college basketball game at Xavier. Outstanding atmosphere. You have to credit Xavier and their fans. They made it a great place to play. Classy fans. I thought it was very classy and disciplined - everybody stayed in the stands - also, I don't think it was that big a deal for them - they were #5 and we were #1 so it wasn't that big of a deal but it was really cool. I thought they played great. There were a lot of little things that they did well that we didn't. Nothing major - just little areas of the defense - little areas of rebounding - little things they did offensively and they just combined to beat us.
And we have just as tough a game and just as tough an environment going up to Marquette. They are playing as well as anyone in our conference right now and their game against Creighton was really impressive. Their defensive performance and holding down Creighton's threes was impressive - they are playing great. It will be a big-time atmosphere and a heck of a game.

OT: Ryan Howard

I'll never say a bad word about that guy, but that his talk with the press was painful yesterday. He said he feels disrespected and was treated unfairly by the media. I can agree to an extent that I always thought Howard has been a whipping boy for bad contracts in baseball, but that was always more nationally than locally.

Then he gets into talking about how he doesn't think it's fair to platoon him because of his past production. I get that he is a competitor and wants playing time but he can't be serious here. A platoon with Ruf is about the best thing for Howard. It gives him a chance to play to his strength of hitting against RH, it keeps him fresh, and who knows - if he does well the Phillies can move him for nothing to a team that can bring him in for a power bat off the bench for the end of the season.

Your Pavilion Priority List

Mark Jackson spoke on Saturday about wanting to be inclusive regarding ideas related to the Pavilion renovation.

Let's use this thread to collect legitimate ideas for what people most want to see in the improved Pavilion.

Think of all the things that you think are most important to include in the project (funds and time are constraints ) .... then narrow your list to the 3, 4 or 5 (no more than that please) must-haves for the project and post them here.

Please note that the odds are that the remodeled Pavilion will have less seats (making room for luxury suites) than more.
So if you think more seats are needed please limit any "add X more seats" suggestions to 1K (a total capacity of 7500). 7K or so is as absurd as we should get on capacity.

I appreciate good humor as much as anyone but, given that I plan to print this thread out and mail it to the AD, please only include legitimate suggestions. I don't want to have to waste time editing the thread and trying to identify sarcasm.

Thanks,
E

Xavier statements

It was a good and tough game last night. Yet, those are games your program and team needs to be in come this time. I actually have a little different out look last night, to have a game like that is great for a team late in the season heading into March. You watch video and learn from it. In a loss you can take a lot of lessons from it.
1) In NYC I think that is a different result. It is tough to be that type of team at home, as they probably felt when we beat them by 30 at our place.
2) Our inability to finish on the offensive end and our key defense breakdowns had a lot to do with the loss. Yet, how many times do we see that in a Jay Wright coached team? I suspect that to be corrected come Saturday.
3) We didn't hit some shots that we typically make. Hart missed a few bunnies, Arch missed some lay ups, and Daniel even missed a lay up. We make those then we are right back in the game.
4) One thing that concerns me are the quick shots, specifically in the second half. There was a stretch where we were one and done. I would like to see us get a better quality shot at those times, especially when X went on a run instead of firing it up right away. We are at our best when the ball is moving and making the defesne on scramble. I wouldn't mind seeing our guards and Kris/Hart get some more lost looks. Better quality shots than quantity.

5) Kris Jenkins, despite foul trouble, played one heck of a game. I am really happy to see him playing so well, makes us dangerous. He showed out last night. That's a credit to Kris as a player, hard worker, and to the Staff. That mid works his you know what off each game and obviously in the off season.

6) Give credit to X, they took us out of some stuff that we like to do. But we hit some shots we typically make and we are right in it. It is not like X blew the doors off of us. That being said, X is a very good team, which there is no shame in loosing to. They are balanced and will go far in March.

No reason to panic, still a game up in the BE with three to play. I suspect Saturday will be a different result.
