Brad Stevens and Jay Wright

I am a Celtics fan and and Nova die hard and just really started watching the Celtics a bit closer since the Pats lost. I have noticed that Stevens and Jay seem to have a similar philosophy of using your best players regardless of size and rolling with a high 3 point shooting, switching man defense approach. Watching them play the Knicks tonight I'm reminded of watching Nova with team centered around guards and Pinkston/ Sullinger playing similar roles. No stars, just team ball performing better than the talent would have you believe.

3 point shot - Arch's and the team's

Since he went 7-14 in the Xavier game, Arcch has been 11-40 (27%). I haven't kept an accurate count, but it seems to me a large percentage of the misses are because he is short on the shot hitting the front of the rim. Anybody else notice this?

Also The announcers said that JW gave the team an easy practice because he thought they had tired legs - then the team shoots the lights out on 3s last night( and Arch was a respectable 2 for 4) Wonder if JW will start letting up on hard practices, especially with DO hurt and our rotation down to 7 instead of 8.

Team 3 point shooting, guard play and March

Certainly vs. St. John's, we win that game by 30 if we made some 3's, but that team is the worst BE team I have seen in my life, so all the poor shooting did was reinforce the concerns I've had since the Providence game that our poor shooting will knock us out early yet again. Some thoughts as to why:
  1. We defend like crazy, and that has allowed us to win so many games even when we shoot poorly. But in the Dance, stars make plays despite great defense (see Bentil and Dunn last weekend) and we MUST shoot the 3 well to compete in the tournament. We are limited in how we can beat a GOOD team. We can pull it off in the BE (like Georgetown), but in March it's always different, you know it.
  2. We don't have the NBA stud. I debated with Fannon last night about Josh Hart. He said he's a pro, I said, "Maybe after his senior year." Teams who go deep in the dance have "no doubt" pros (GENERALLY!!!). Guys who can take over even against good defense. The eye test - we don't have those guys. I love our guys, but we don't have that stud. Nothing new there.
  3. These are the types of teams we could face in round of 32: LSU, UCONN, Dayton, Texas, ND. They can all beat us, and in fact, if we shoot in the 30's (like we did vs Prov), if will be like NCST - right down to the last possession. Book it! Each of these teams have athletic players, yes even ND with Jackson.
  4. WE MISS DARRUN HILLIARD! Look, I know, he graduated, move on, but he was so good from deep especially in big games. I had honestly forgotten that until recently. He masked poor shooting by others. No one has stepped up from the 3 point line to help offset the lose of DH. Remember how he went down vs. NCST. He was terrific.
  • Our guard play. Arch will be fine, no worries there. Unless Brunson and especially Booth get significantly better soon, we are in trouble. Plain and simple. Booth must be a better 3 point shooter, must handle the ball better vs pressure defense, must make better decisions. Honestly, I can't believe our record is 18-3 with the way B & B have played. I feel like it will catch up to us.
So, the sky isn't falling, and yes, we still won on the road yesterday and are 8-1 in conference, but the signs are right in front of us. Ignore at your own peril.

Your Annual Donation to Villanova

Below is the email I sent out to all non-donors in the Greater Washington DC area to solicit for more participation in the Annual Fund drive. The Chapter Challenge program makes it more of a contest among the 40+ alumni groups. We need everyone's help to increase the participation rate on annual giving to Villanova. If you are already an annual donor....THANK YOU!!!! If you are not....please consider giving today. It is important for us to give back now more than ever the University continues to grow and prosper for future generations.

MY EMAIL TO DC AREA ALUMS (Who have not given yet):

This is Jerry Quinn, your former DC Chapter President, asking you to join in the 2015 Chapter Challenge. I hope similar to me that you enjoyed your time at Villanova and look back on those years fondly. I have met some of the greatest people through my Villanova network and have been able to develop great relationships throughout the school and with alums across the country. This Fall my oldest daughter Hanna will be a senior chemical engineer at Villanova and is on track for Spring 2016 graduation. The school is going thru an incredible transformation that will position the University for greater excellence as they start the Lancaster Lot project after graduation and is reclassified from "Regional" to "National" status according to the rating system. These two events are great reasons to join this year's Chapter Challenge.

You can direct your gift to over 60 specific areas that include academic programs, campus ministry programming or even a specific athletic team. You control where 100% your money is directed when you give to Villanova. All gifts count toward the goal of increasing the annual participation rate among our alumni. All donations for FY2015 must by made no later than midnight on Sunday 5/31/2015 to count towards this year's Chapter Challenge.
