How the OK game started

1. 8 passes including Ochefu post up: Hart turns it over under the basket
2. 2 passes Hart drives and misses a wide open bunny
a. OK scores a 3 on a 1-pass break on the rebound where Ochefu ran into the paint with everyone else instead of covering the wide open 3
3. 4 passes, Brunson attempts an open 3 with under 10 to shoot rolling off an Ochefu high ball screen. Hits the front rim.
a. OK scores a 3 on a 1-pass break on the rebound where Ochefu took himself out of the play trying to save the ball and Brunson was 10 feet off Hield.
4. 1 pass, Arch misses open mid-range long
5. 5 passes, including post-up to Ochefu, kicked out and reversed to a wide open Brunson who shot an open 3 long.
6. 1 pass Arch hits a pull up 3 on the rebound break.
7. 1 pass missed mildly contested 3 attempt by Jenkins off to the right
8. On the break, outlet to Arch in same spot as made 3, halfway down and out
a. OK scores a 3 as Woodward beats Jenkins off the dribble and finds a wide open Hield as every Nova player on his side was in the paint.
9. 5 passes include an Ochefu post-up, Arch misses open 3 hitting the front rim (under 10 on the clock)
a. OK hits a 3 on zero passes as Hart sagged to the FT line on Cousins
10. 5 passes Arch shoots a slightly contested midrange airball
a. OK hits a 3 on 1 pass to Hield who steps back on a sagging Jenkins
===============================================================

So, OK on their first 5 made shots were on zero or 1-pass plays, all 5 of which were just bad defensive positioning plays. With Nova's possessions, 5 times they had 4 or more passes resulting in a TO, 3 open shots (missed) and 1 semi-contested airball. The other 5 had 2 good fastbreak attempts by Arch (1 made 1 in and out) 1 rushed and semi contested shot by Jenkins, 1 wide open mid-range by Arch, and 1 wide open bunny missed by Hart.

Honestly there was nothing generally wrong with the start of the game offensively other than missing shots and rushing a bit here and there. Defensively was the problem where we just really had bad positioning and gave OK easy 1 or no-pass 3-ball attempts.

About that disaster of game in Pearl Harbor

Before the season started I had two concerns:
Concern # 1
How will Jalen Brunson fit with a team that is well established with two seniors and two juniors?
Will they clash? Will he be looking to get his at expense of the team?
Well, the answer is obvious by now.
He fits well and if there is any concern is that he probably should be more assertive and not defer to others so much.
Concern # 2
Are we going to shoot too many 3’s?
Another obvious answer. YES!
And this is a disaster. We are a three-point shooting team and we are lousy at it. We only shoot at .309 average. That is enough bricks to build a spanking brand new Pavilion on Ithan Avenue.

Einstein once defined insanity as repeating the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Well, it seems to me that we are insane!

This needs to change quickly, if we expect better results in March.

Last night I looked at the half time stats. (I did not have the heart to look at the final stats).
Nobody on the team made more than one FG. Nobody. All one for…
And this was our good half where we made a come-back and kept it close.
Nobody on this team can currently claim to be a good 3-point shooter. Nobody.

Jay is way smarter than I am, so I trust he knows and this and will make the proper adjustments.
Not much more to add.

Oh, yeah one more thing:
I have to thank NovaNut for organizing the game watch at Tilted Kilt.
The surrounding kept me from going totally mad
If I had been home watching that thing, my beautiful brand new TV might have not survived it.

Increased security for CoP's (arguably) premier cultural event

Not the Wing Bowl, but the Mummers parade will have increased security due to a theoretical threat of a terrorist attack.

Does anyone outside of South Philly/South Jersey care/know about this event? What kind of prestige would it bring ISIS to attack a parade where the only people who care about said parade are the ones "marching" in it.

Burrs?

Mark Ferrante Named AFCA Coach of the Year

Long time Nova offensive line coach honored by the American Football Coaches Association. Each year the AFCA names one assistant from the five divisions of college football, FBS, FCS, Division 2 Division 3 and NAIA
29 years at Nova Ferrante has coached 11 All-East performers, 15 first team All-Conference players, three All-Americans and one NFL draft pick. He also helped Nova to 11 NCAA playoff berths, six conference titles, three national semifinal appearances, and the great 2009 National Championship. Congrats Mark.

Temple

One of my gripes about playing Temple we are playing a local rival on an uneven playing field. I love having an FBS game each year, but I don't want to be potential cannon fodder for a program in our back yard whose fans can't stand us, and whose media coverage (both print and electronic) are largely Temple grads. If VU was FBS, I would all be in favor of playing the game.
To their credit, Temple has made great strides, strides that I didn't think they were capable of making. Their next test is sustaining the level they have reached. We play them in 2 years, and I just hope we can be competitive. We beat them in '09, should have beaten them in '10, got blown out in '11 and '12 (although Villanova put up 200 yds of offense on them in the first half when the game still meant something), could have beaten them in '13 had we played them (Fordham beat them that year), would have been competitive with them in '14, and would probably have gotten beaten decisively this year, even with JR. The gap seems to be widening. Can we be competitive in 2017?? I hope so. I know Andy like to paly the game because no travel etc. I just don't see the upside. Thoughts??

Lineup shakeup

Considering the lousy starts the team has had this year (obviously including OU), a lineup shakeup wouldn't be too difficult to justify.
First off, I think moving Arch back on the ball to initiate offense as our primary 1 starts it.
He's been there for 3 years, and senior year, he could be back to stirring the drink.
Bring the Brunson off the bench to spell Arch, and slide Arch over for 10 minutes to play off the ball so they get their minutes, but start Arch, with Brunson off the bench.
Start Booth at the off guard. Give Booth the opportunity to put it on the deck and create, and look for his shot.
Start Bridges instead of KJ. With Booth and Bridges starting, I believe that we step up a notch defensively, and from a rebounding perspective, it may be a gain also. With KJ's lack of scoring early, I believe we may actually have a net gain offensively also.
Bringing KJ off the bench will give him a different feel for his role, and could serve to ignite his game. (credit to Kittlesfan who I believe also proposed this).
Keep in mind, this is a proposal to run this lineup to start. Often times, we've dug a hole early, which can make it difficult to gain control of the game, with the team playing catchup, and not running it's offense effectively, settling for early shots, and more 3s.

KenPom on Villanova 3-pt shooting

http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/entry/villanovas_deceptive_3_point_percentage

He brings up most of the points that many of us have brought up already - Hart, Jenkins and Booth are well below their career averages, the freshmen probably won't combine to shoot 22% all season, and there are other signs to believe Nova will turn around their shooting.

Very interesting read. His conclusion is below.

"Given what we know about Villanova’s most frequent shooters, one can reasonably have more confidence that the Wildcats are just going through a phase. Any future opponents would be unwise to assume that Villanova has been afflicted with some sort of permanent shooting disease or that Jay Wright is thinking about abandoning his 4-out approach.

Three-point shooting is prone to a lot of variation from game to game. And in order to predict future 3-point shooting this early in the season, we need more information than a team’s actual 3-point percentage to date. Three-point attempt percentage is more stable at this point, and teams that take a lot of 3’s are probably decent at 3-point shooting. And it’s a particularly bold statement to take a bunch of 3’s while being a very good 2-point shooting team. That team is expecting to make its 3’s at a very high rate.

Well, that describes Villanova. And while it’s unusual for a good shooting team to go through an eight-game slump, it’s not impossible. I’ll take the Wildcats as an above-average 3-point shooting team going forward. And there’s a decent chance they shoot it better than an Oklahoma team that just burned up the nets in their presence."

The Zinger

Kristaps is a stud. Can't believe he's this good already. He's gonna have teams blowing high lottery picks on euro stiffs again like it's going out of style. Dragan Bender. Come on down. Welcome to the high lottery. Let's hope Saric is half as good as Zinger. Top of this past draft looks good. Except Russell. He just got benched 10 games for Lou Williams for being lazy. Imagine that. Benched for Lou Williams for laziness. Pretty hilarious considering Lou Will never attempted to guard anything in his life. Towns, Okafor, Zinger very promising. Mudiay needs to develop a semblance of a jumper and he will be good as well. Russell is doomed for as long as he's in LaLa land. That cat needs to be taken away from the bright lights, big city and put in Milwaukee or something. He's already got the star douche glide a month into his career. Not a good look. Dating that young Jenner skank. You kidding me, bo? Probably snorts lines off her asscrack on the regular.
