The 5 this year

I believe that our options at the 5 will change somewhat due to our perimeter personel.
With the addition of Brunson, and the possibility of Booth and Arch playing more off the ball (two guards both of which have point guard distribution abilities), the attacking of the basket will become more prolific.
I see this team attacking off the bounce inside the 3 point line more often then last year.
Last year, the primary "attack the basket," threat was DH. Generally, that was a drive and finish move, not a begin the offense move. I believe we will put the ball on the deck and drive more, and see a bit more pick and rolling with our bigs.
That driving will help to bring the defensive focus of the opposition away from the perimeter, and make each defender think and react to a more varied attack offensively then we presented last year. Last year was a passing, and spacing attack, creating open looks more by swinging the ball rapidly for open looks.
With that said, I think we need an offensive rebounder (besides guards pounding the boards and a big that can make himself available for a dish as an option for the driver. I don't see that in Jenkins. I can see Reynolds filling that roll. He showed good mobility and hands, along with the ability to finish, and rebound.
I believe he plays 40% of the minutes Ochefu plays, with an uptick for more as he gets comfortable.
Ochefu 25, Reynolds 10. Ochefu20, Reynolds 8
Not sold on Jenkins at the 5.
Considering Ochefu's been capable of playing without fouls being an issue most games last year, I see 25 and 12 being a solid average for these two.
I think this kid Reynolds will surprise a few people this year.
Just curious what the consensus is on this.

Recruiting for 2015 - General

I realize that recruiting for 2014 has not been finalized, but there is a lot of talent in VU's recruiting territory and I have been intrigued by Myles Marshall (TX), who recently finished 2nd in the USA Juniors 800 in 1:48.43. A rising senior. Doesn't turn 17 until December. Best part is he is the son of two Villanova greats - Debbie Grant & John Marshall. Great bloodlines. Does Marcus pursue him?

One would think a kid might have some latent dream of running where his parents were stars, but that has rarely been the case for VU. (Someone correct me if I am wrong ...) Furthermore he is in Texas. Never heard of any Texas runner coming to VU. Do recall an exchange with a Villanova alumnus during the 2014 recruiting. Does that pose an obstacle?

Even bigger concern: Does the fact that Marshall was released prove to be an insurmountable obstacle?

Kid obviously has talent and comes from a good family - remember they are both VU grads. Would be really cool if he were to achieve success at his parents' alma mater - very cool..

Most CoP pic ever?

Back in town for work so decided to hit up Phils game last night with a few friends. First time at park since 2009 when I was a senior at Nova when it was nothing but meatheads in "ill" shirts. Funny how a few losing seasons thinned the herd of that type.

But lo and behold as soon as I pull up, I'm treated to the most Delco-ish sight ever.

1) Camo-cargo pants - Check
2) jorts. check
3) hat backwards. check
4) Utley jersey. check
5) Too fat to button said Utley jersey. check
6) Red solo cups for beer pong or chug contest. check
7) cigarette in hand. check
8) replica fake throwback jersey of childhood hero. check

Really this pic should be on the sign that welcomes people to Upper Darby.

Rick Brunson on Temple and Jalen

From today's Chicago Tribune article:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/ct-rick-brunson-spt-0726-20150725-story.html

"And, for the first time, he emphatically denied his son was headed to Temple with him as a package deal.

Brunson said the job he discussed with Temple coach Fran Dunphy was a non-bench role, which, by NCAA law, would have prohibited his son from joining until two years after graduation.

"My son always wanted to go to Villanova," Brunson said. "Nobody understands this. He never, ever wanted to go to Temple with me. I've never coached him at any level. Would I have wanted him to play for me at Temple? Of course. Would it have been right as a family? You're damn right. But would it have been wrong for him? Yes.

"I have a lot of love and respect for Fran Dunphy because he understood that I couldn't force my son to go to Temple. It was a long shot for him to go there. Jalen wanted to have a chance to play in a Final Four. Of all the schools that recruited him, he felt Villanova has the best shot of playing in a Final Four this coming season."

Brunson is looking for brighter days ahead, for Jalen at Villanova and for him at points unknown. He is seeking new coaching opportunities.

"I'm tired of people putting an 18-year-old kid in my BS," he said. "This is a kid who doesn't get paid to play basketball. He doesn't deserve to be written about in a negative light of his father. A woman lied. We fought it and did it the right way in a court of law.

"We raised Jalen the right way. He didn't react to anything and did a great job handling this with dignity. None of this is going to break him or us."

Nova Notebook: Josh Hart

Someone said it in another thread and I had to agree with him...Josh Hart will be our best and most productive player next year. (I think Ochefu will be most valuable if he can play 27-28 minutes a game, but Hart will be our best)

http://www.villanova.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/073015aaa.html

This interview says that he is at 630 career points right now, so assuming 33 games played this year, he'll need to average 11.2 to get to 1,000 this year. He also has 312 rebounds...let's just say he doubles it (plus a little) for 650 total rebounds for his career. We could be looking at 1,500 career points and 650 career rebounds. I'm sure he'd be the smallest guy in that club at Villanova...

I was a little bored last night and wanted to get fired up for a rec league basketball game as I was in a major shooting slump and re-watched the PC game. 18 points on 7-10 shooting (3-5 for 3) 3 rebs, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block. Nevermind the fact that we were up 13 with 14 minutes left and almost lost the game...Josh played amazingly. He obviously did the same thing against Marquette and X, but if we get regular season Josh Hart, we're going to be a very good team next year. If we get Big East Tournament Josh Hart all season...look out. Now, I also know that Hart won't shoot 72% for the season and 64% from 3, but the activity, the smart, but more aggressive shot selection...it can all come together.

All he needs is to tighten up his handle and continue improving on his dribble/drive game...and with his projection and high motor and determination, you can't tell me that he isn't a Jimmy Butler clone...(remember, Jimmy Butler played some 5 for Marquette, but was mostly a 4...and while a very good player, it took him a few years and a Derek Rose injury or two to get him where he is...but damn can JB play now) I'm not saying Hart will get a 90 million dollar contract, but the high motor, slightly undersized build and games of these guys is very similar.

Throwback Videos

Hi folks,

I'm going through the process of digging through the old Villanova basketball plays that are saved on my computer and I'm uploading them onto YouTube. New content will be added on an iterative basis for the next few weeks. You can view the videos here:

Los Mets

What a disaster. Some stiff player (Flores) was butthurt he was about to be traded so he openly wept on the field. Gutless. Square up.

Then the GM blames Twitter for the rumors instead of his own incompetence.

Speaking of butthurt, then the the manager outs Flores and refers to him as "gay" in his press conference. Then goes on to tell fans to stay home since all they do is check their phones anyway at the game.

Great organization.

Joe Eichorn Simply the Best

What a shame.
Typical Villanova.
It,s not the University.
It,s somebody else making the decision.
What a ridiculous place.
Everyone else is calling the shots.
Gee, after 40 yrs, it is so apparent that
the University holds athletics not in
low regard, but no regard.
Destruction of the track program.
Destruction of the basketball.
If this place had any interest in athletics,
the school would be poised to do something
positive.
Rumor has it that the Big 12 is contemplating expansion,
let,s say Villanova & Connecticut.
At Villanova, sports is not important, not a priority.
What is the agenda ?
Who makes these decisions ?
Does the Board of Trustees have a say in anything.
Or is it a multitude of rich people, impressed with themselves
who do what ever the priest says.
Undoubtedly rubber stamping at its best.

Just saying.

Summer Jam

Saw today on facebook through the Villanova bball page that the Summer Jam was today. At a Golf club.

Saw pics with Foye, Nardi, Lowry, Sumpter, Charles and many of the older guys there like Melchionni.

I still haven't heard an actual reason for why the Summer Jam was cancelled on campus with all the alumni. It was such a great event to keep the fans/ticket holders excited even during the summer months. Any actual reason for this being taken away from the fans?
