Matt Szczur Makes The Cubs Big League Roster

I project an 18-12 record 9-7 in CUSA

I dont count the d2 game because the NCAA doesnt.

I have us undefeated at Home in the non-conference.

That shouldnt get us a sniff at the NIT. (Few, if any, quality wins)

Maybe not even one of the "buy" tournaments.

I think away teams have to pay their own expenses and home teams make little or nothing despite hosting the game.

I have no idea if we would partcipate if asked. Im inclined to think we would say yes if we got a home game first.

Universal DH

A lot of buzz on this topic after Wainwright injures his achilles batting and is out for year. Also, Scherzer to miss a start after injuring his thumb batting. Every year there are injuries to pitchers batting so this is nothing new. What are your thoughts on the universal DH? I am torn. While I think it makes a lot of sense and will definitely increase offense, I have always enjoyed the NL game of moving runners with sac bunts, double switches, pinch hitting, and even the pitchers that can rake (Travis Wood, Madison Bumgarner, Carlos Zambrano etc).

Bumgarner had some great responses to Scherzer whining about pitchers hitting.

Future

This may be a bit premature, but it is something to think about.

The women did not run 4x1500 at Penn - probably because they did not have four quality milers. Something is wrong with Margey, this year. Hurt? Not in shape? But it does not appear to be any better for next year. Shappert has been exceptional, but she graduates. Piccirillo is also exceptional, but that is it. Siofra C-B has been very good. That is about it. Not impressed with incoming class - there does not appear to be any exceptional talent. Burda is distance. Again, poor recruiting: nothing in soph class, one in frosh class, apparently not much in incoming class.

I do not claim to be infallible so maybe someone else has a more optimistic view.

Men are in better shape. They have quality and depth. The McEntee of this year is replaced by Lampron. I do no know who is the 5th man in XC. Except for Williamsz and Tiernan, who are both exceptional, the talent is good to very good. I am still waiting to see the Malone of his HS years. Just how good can Wetzel be especially considering that his development was set back by the injury. So maybe there is more upside then one might think.

Note: the G'town anchor in the 4x800 was Joe White, whom Muhammed beat in the NJ HS championship in record time. Mohammed has been good, this season, but not that good. Do not want a repeat of Fitzsimons.

My point: Where is Villanova's next Williamsz? Is that possibly in Slade who has speed to do well at mile, but is not an outstanding 800 man? Is there some outstanding recruit that has not been announced?

And my standard lament: Please get a 400 man with some talent. But there is nothing on the horizon - at least not for next year.

Matt Gudzak & Michael Williams Named Most Improved Players During Spring Ball

At the end of every spring season, Wildcat coaches name a Most Improved Player for both O and D. Soph RB Matt Gudzak from Toms River, NJ and Toms River East High and Michael Williams from Woodland, Md and Archbishop Spalding are this year's winners. Nova fans might remember Gudzak as a kickoff returner as well as a promising RB. Williams saw limited time last season as a redshirt frosh. I think Williams had an offer from Maryland, but they wanted him as an O lineman . He wanted to play D. So he came to VU. Both are expected to see significant PT this season. Gudzak is 5 9 195 Williams 6 4 280

Is there any hope?

When my wife was nearing the age where you must pay on
her tax shelter annuity, she hadn't heard anything from the company
which handles her money. She went up to the man who handles
her account, and he told her he would switch the TSA money into some
other account. He failed to do so.

The man who does our taxes where did this advisor put the TSA funds.
He told us he didn't do anything. We are aware that there will be penalties
on all of those monies for all of for 2014 and five months of this year. The man
who does our taxes is in contact with the IRS about the penalties. Is there any
hope that the IRS will be merciful.

This has nothing to do with me except the president of the company contacted
us when my wife transferred all of her accounts to another company. I have
been friends with the president for over fifty years. My suggestion to him was for his
company to pay the penalties since his employee made the mistake. But there was nothing
in writing at the time my wife told her advisor to reinvest the TSA funds

some stuff from the latest bb times

basketball times early top 25 for next season:
#1 UNC
#2 UVA
#3 KY
#7 Villanova
#18 Butler
Others w/ votes: Xavier, GTown, Providence

unclear if Georgetown was excluded because the poll was taken pre-DSR-decision to return.

Hoop Scoop - Top 50 recruiting classes:
#14 Marquette
#22 GTown
#25 St. John's
#33 Providence
#39 Villanova

interestingly - Temple's class came in at #49 - supporting the argument some were making on this board several months back that the VU class was not much better than the TU class.

The Big East

I can't wait to have Eric pull up all the negative posts on what will be the #1 college basketball league - top to bottom in America very soon. We will look back at our BET title this year very fondly like the programs at Cuse and GTown look at theirs. Take a look at this league...

Nova - clearly a top 10 program in America the past two seasons and for the forseeable future - Brunson, Spellman, Booth, Paschall, Hart, Jenkins, Bridges, Donte and the beat will go on...

GTown - will be a handful next year. DSR - and then young guys like Copeland, Govan, Peak, Derrickson, White... Get some guards and we'll have a huge challenge. Top 20 program for sure going forward. Too much talent not to be.

SJ - Mullin will get them going with that group of assitants. Will be a Top 20 program as well - at least.

Marquette - Wojo looked solid last year. Add Ellenson and Cheatum with other pieces like Carter and they look like they will be a Top 25 caliber outfit very soon.

PC - With Dunn, they will be Top 25 this year. Dunn, Lindsay, Bentil, Chukwu, Owens - all Top 100 pedigrees and Cooley can coach.

X - great young talent. Will be a Top 30 group going forward and dangerous always in March

Butler - have another year or two at least with existing talent - an NCAA tournament team/program

SHU - Freddie will be challenged by Slice and the guys in Queens - will be interesting. Current talent is NCAA worthy next year - Gibbs, Whitehead, Delgado - surrounded by Carrington, Rodriguez, etc.

Creighton - have a Top 50 big coming in according to Rivals - transfers - etc. Will be solid, but league around them looking too good...

DePaul - DOA with Leitao - need some team to be lousy

Next year I see the following NCAA teams:

Locks: Nova, GTown, PC, X, Butler

Threats: SHU, Marquette

Not Ready Yet: St. Johns

Not there: Creighton (still tough though) and DePaul (have some guys)

Top to Bottom - the best conference in America - and getting stronger at the top each year.

Going forward - 8 legit NCAA threats every year. This is a six bid league for the forseeable future - with only 10 teams.

UCONN - come on down!

Loss of middle class jobs major cause of urban unrest

Baltimore is only the latest city reacting initially to heavy handed police practices but ultimately the hollowing out of the middle class by the outsourcing of manufacturing jobs. Our African-American male citizens are the victims of trade policies which created over a 40-50% unemployment rate in most cities. 5,000,000 manufacturing jobs lost since NAFTA in 1993. The pending Trans Pacific Partnership treaty must be scrapped and a true private-public partnership to train and employ Americans requires a top priority. Corporations must step up and stop the outsourcing of jobs and give our fellow Americans a fighting chance to succeed. Educational improvements and criminal justice reform require more than the lip service of politicians. Maximum effort is required or we'll repeat the history of the 1960s. Shape up people.
