Penn Relays

There are a couple of posts under Raleigh Relays that address Penn Relays. It is about four weeks away, so maybe we discuss the entire issue.

TFE, the women's DMR is Thursday, the 4x1500 is Friday, and the 4x800 is Saturday. Thus, one doesn't necessaryily have a conflict in running all three relays. However, one could be concerned about running some people all three days. Basd on the results from Raleigh Relays, VU could run a 4x800 without Lipari. Thus she would only have to run Thursday (DMR) and Friday (4x1500). Akande, on the other hand, might have to run all three days. Question is where are Mimic and Neutts? Neutts has run 2:07 and 4:23 and ran legs on relays at Penn in 2011.

Go over to the Penn Relays website and check-out the times from last year. Then you can get a sense of what is needed. Summer Cook might be able to run on 4x1500.

Excattyguy is really right about Oregon. They are deep and talented. Figure Hasay and Phylis Francis will be available, this year. Can Lipari stay with Hasay? How does VU make-up the four sec differential on the 400 leg? And the have added Annie LeBlanc, this year.

VU has some talent. Can they put together the right combination(s) to win?

According to the Oregon website, Oregon is coming to the Penn Relays. Arkansas is not coming nor is Florida. They are both at the new Arkansas Invitational. There is a thread on that subject. All the other top schools seem to be coming. Wonder if ireland will send a team from Dublin City University (DCU) or University College Dublin (UCD)? Get them confused. Which school came during indoor season 2012?

Men do have a conflict because DMR is Friday (2:25 pm); 4xmile is Saturday at 12:55 pm and 4x800 is Saturday at 4:40 pm. So you have about three and a half hours to recover. Is that enough time for the same guys (Williamsz & McEntee) to perform well in both relays? It is possible. In 2005, Michigan won all three - DMR, 4xmile & 4x800 - using Ellerton, Willis & Brennan on all three relays. Where is Mildenhal? And is he better than Tully or Solis?

Keys for men in DMR are Ellison (400) and Fitzsimons (800). Ellispn is really an 800 guy, but he is VU's best 400 man.. Fitzsimons has not shown the dominance you would expect from him. Can he run in the 1:46 - 1:47 range?

Soph Women's Class?

What happened - particularly with the runners?

One should have patience in such matters. Studies can take a toll - and VU is one of the better academic institutions. Injuries can be a factor. But what happened to Courtney Chapman and Megan Venables. They seemed like the gems of the class. They were outstanding in high school, but there has been no improvement. In reality, they seem to have gone backwards. Chapman ran 4:23 (1500) in 2011 - 5th in nation behind Chapus, Cain, Cuffe & Meier (good company) ; latest 1500 is 4:36 at Raleigh Relays. She did finish 2nd in 3000 at Colonila Relays. Is that a good sign?

Schappert has been the surprise. She will have a role at Penn Relays, this year. And I think Veronica Johnson is progressing well. She might be a better posibility at 400? And Walden has been good. The rest?

Peter Winslow to VU

Peter Winslow attends Exeter HS (NH) and plans to compete in the decathlon at VU and major in business.

Go over to Milesplit - NH or just google his name with Exeter. And he does compete in just about every event.

I don't believe this is the same high school as Phillips Exeter Academy ...?

An interesting track & field athlete for VU.. Will he be running any relays?

Marcus is getting to be very creative.

VU Signs Ayo Obadare

VU has signed a 400 man - Ayo Obadare (Elmont, NY). Ran 48.49 indoors, this year. Split 47.5. There is evidence that he was running in 2011, but may not beens serious until indoor 2012.

The last good 400 man for VU , Elvis Lewis, also came from same part of Long Island..

Check out a map. Elmont, NY is close to Hempstead (Lewis) and just south of Floral Park (Sabrina Southerland). Will that be of importance?

Arkansas & Penn Relays

On anothere thread, I mentioned that I had read that Arkansas was not coming to the Penn Relays, this year. Nor are they going to Drake. Went over to their website and discovered that this is true. Furthermore they have established the Arkansas Invitational for that Saturday (4/27) and they will be at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford the next day. Why? They have the horses
.
When one doesn't understand something, my suggestion is follow the $.

They will save $ by not flying to Philadelphia and they will make $ by holding their own t&f meet. Guess that is important.

Weekend before, they are at Oregon for a sort of dual meet as part of the Oregon Relays. Believe there is a telecast of sorts.

What I always find fascinating about track & field in the U.S. is that it works overtime to prove that that it does not exist. If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound. The Penn Relays probably draws more fans in its three days than all of these other meets combined. Even has a TV contract. It is a great weekend for track fans. Instead of supporting this event, those in track seem bent on diminishing it. Never understood why Drake Relays were the same weekend.

Note: the first Russian - American dual meet I believe was held at Franklin Field and it was a big deal.

Track meets use to be held at the Los Angeles Colesium, but now we hold the national trials and championships at Tracktown USA - Eugene - home of Nke $. It is quaint, but its like the NFL holding its Super Bowl in Canton, OH.

Great track on Randalls Island in NYC and the view of the city is great. Could use more stands though, but that can be fixed by simply building more. Philly has Frankin Field. LA and the Colesium. These are major metropolitan areas and people will come and track will have a platform. Right now it is a backwater sport that only has relevance during Olympic years. And it is a great sport ...

Affect of New Big East on the women's program?

Just curious what the followers of the women's program think of the new league? Seems like Villanova has a chance to become a real power without ND, UCONN, Rutgers, etc. standing in our way? I know Depaul is usually decent, as is SJU, but I can't imagine the A-10 schools being very competitive, looks like both X and Butler are around .500 this year. Let's hear it.

Stanford & Recruiting

Stanford is a womderful school - excellent academics. Climate is great; not far from SF (great city); nice neighborhood - Palo Alto; fine athletic program; president of school is a VU grad. But what is even more impressive is their recruiting in track. Kids will pay to go to Stanford instead of accepting $ from VU. Now that is good. Check their roster and see the names of former HS track & field stars. Okay, some didn't quite workout, but they still come. And it is not Lananna now. He is busy working his magic in Oregon. See the size of Stanford's team. Impressive. I bring this all up now because of a recent "discovery." Check who is a freshman sprinter on the team - Steve Solomon (AUS). Do the research (Google works fine). Wow! Think your DMR can compete?

VU recruits in Australia. Blincoe represents VU; Gibney just graduated; Nic Bideau (Sonia O'Sullivan's husband) is a major coach in Australia. Did VU not try to recruit Solomon?

Solomon's father is a doctor. Had to know the kid would pursue education and possible medical degree. Think of Mary Cain the same way.

Rich just seem to get richer. VU has to try harder and be more creative.

Maybe this is the beginning of the West coast schools tapping into Australia and New Zealand. They are a lot closer than the East coast schools.

But Steve Solomon ... Wow.

Just some thoughts ...
