Going to Aruba in a few weeks. Staying at the Marriott since I had the points. Any recommendations to restaurants, excursions or activities in Aruba.

I stayed at the Hyatt next door. Honestly, I was not that impressed with the island. The argentinian steakhouses were very cool. Water is nice and would encourage snorkeling or a boat trip. Beaches at Marriot-hyatt were rocky and not great. Pool was better.

Went down a couple of years ago. I, like ADP, wasn't overly impressed either.

The Hyatt seemed to be the nicest resort when I was there.

The Ritz was due to open shortly after my visit. I'm sure that's worth heading towards for dining and drinks.

Go to El Gaucho if you're looking to get away from the resorts and head downtown one night. It's touristy but good.

Stay away from this guy

i will find the email itinerary I have. I loved the island. Never went near Palm Beach, which is where you are staying. Will give you 5 or 6 solid restaurants. Major concern I believe where you are staying is getting a palapa everyday. See if you can pay someone at the hotel to reserve one for you. Very hot and very windy.

Agree!

Been a couple of times. It's not the best island in the world, but it's cleaner and a lot safer than most Caribbean destinations. It's gotten pretty darn americanized in recent years - a plus for some, a minus for others.

Rent a car one day and drive around the island. You really can't get lost, and there is some stuff to see in the backcountry.

Recommend Baby Beach for some cool, easy snorkeling and a good beach bar.

The italian place, La Trattoria El Faro Blanco, up by California Lighthouse is good and has some killer views back towards the high-rise area.

We took a cab to Superfoods (think slightly exotic Wal-Mart) a couple of times and stocked up on beer, wine and snacks. It's like $5 from the high-rise area, and it saved us a ton of cash on drinks at the hotel.

Just walking along the path that runs behind all of the hotels between the grounds and the beach is a great diversion. Lots of bars and quickie food places along the way.

Sneak into the Hyatt pool and use the waterslide.

Flying Fishbone is my other restaurant recommendation. It's way out of town down towards Baby Beach, but there are 4-5 tables actually in the ocean and it's a pretty cool experience. The beach there faces sunset, so it's damn romantic. As a bonus, it's a legit 3-4 star restaurant. Reservations imperative.

I'm a cheap SOB so I'd recommend buying booze in the duty free and buying mixers on the island.

My four favorite restaurants

Marandi Restaurant
La Trattoria at the California Lighthouse
Elliott's Restaurante Italiano
Pinchos Grill

Don't eat the pizza on the island. Surf and turf every night.

There is a Ruth's Chris steakhouse right at the Marriott if you really want a steak.

Ventanas del Mar is very good and not a far drive or taxi ride from the Marriott.

A few others that I like are:

1. Madame Janette
2. Papiamento - get that clay pot for two - it is full of local fish
3. Amazonia Churrascaria
