David Wright's Career Remembered?

surprised there isn't a thread on this yet.

diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis.

What is that?

I informed Mets fans awhile ago that his best days were over and he'd struggle to stay healthy. Was a real nice player in his prime.

Would be a blessing for the Mets. Insurance picks up the contract. Wright's power left with the juice.

You informed people a player in his 30s already had his best days? How is it you are not running a team somewhere?

True. Nothing special in sharing this news. Just like every non-Phillies fan on this board doing the same with Howard, Utley, etc....

Still, some of you did believe that Wright would be part of the better times to come. Not so fast on that one.

Nodding.

Despite the trolling above in the thread, Wright never actually stopped hitting for power. With the exception of 2009 (overcompensating for Citi Field) and 2013 (shoulder injury), he's been pretty consistent. His home runs declined due to the terrible owners building a stadium that appeared to have been designed to deprive him of home runs, but he still hit the ball hard. Unfortunately, what were home runs in Shea (especially to right center) became doubles and long outs.

As for the injury, nobody has any clue how bad it is and it didn't become an issue until he hurt his hammy, so I'll hold off on the doomsday scenarios. It's pretty clear that he'll never be a 160 game starter every year ever again, but there's no reason to think that he'll suddenly lose his ability to manage pain.

Last year his OPS was under 700. His power is long gone as he's now 32. Note, I looked it up and two years ago he actually had a good season. However, he's old and his body is broken. Best case for Mets is he's injured, insurance picks up the contract and they can use that money elsewhere. At this point his game will never return to the point of justifying the contract. 5 more years, not good.

Even in 2014 he was still decent in the first half, and had ended up with a 2.7 WAR despite the awful second half when he was playing through the shoulder injury. He was also still AS level the two prior years. If the stenosis thing is minor he can easily get back to being at least a decent player for a couple more years. Noone believed that he was ever going to be a carry the team type player even going into this season.

Exactly, if he can play elite defense in a depressed offensive climate, he can be a valuable player. The contract shouldn't matter much, but unfortunately it does given that the owners are in close to a billion dollars in debt.

Wright has averaged 126 games per season in the lasr four and that's with one year at 156. He's already missed 38 games this year. Not sure how anyone can expect this trend to change.

Yes, and this is what made your startling prediction so incredible. Absolutely worth the pat on the back you gave yourself

No different than you doing the same with the Phillies.

Hey, you guys still holding out hope he has a 4-5 more productive years to warrant HOF considerations? Yea, that was a rich thread.

I am going on record as saying CC Sabathia's best days are behind him.

I agree. He'll be 35 in July.

The difference is that there were Mets' fans who disputed this when I said it. Look at Foye's and LG's comments in this thread. Still holding out hope and looking for that silver lining. Again, no different than you guys saying the same about aging Phillies' players. I guess we forgot about that.

I'm not holding out hope that he's going to have a late career renaissance. What I am saying is that he can still probably play 120-140 games a season at a relatively high level. Not quite what he was before, but good enough to be valuable. There's no reason to believe that he won't be able to play through it at a high level that may not quite match his prior brilliance. A comparable example would be Chase Utley from 2010 until 2014.

I know most of you have said Cliff Lee is going to come back and win Cy Youngs, but I am saying his best days are behind him. He wont be as good as he was when he was 29

I agree.....

Cliff Lee will be 37 in August not 32 like player in this thread.

And for the record I said Wright was decling two years ago. I was told by Mets' fans that he wasn't.

Is this Rocco Baldelli disease?

No, Wright's whole family was big. Anyway - back to baseball. Lot of talk about Troy Tulowitsky being on the block. This is crazy to say, but i'm going to say his best days are behind him. I know, most disagree, but I can really feel it. Call it a hunch.

Agreed.....

He's played 150+ twice in last 8 seasons. I was on this 3/4 years ago. You're late to the party. Keep going, sport. You're onto something.

Comments are just that he still might be able to be a productive player. He would not be carrying any team any more as also stated. And the HOF conversation was not a prediction, just contemplating that he would basically have to do at least 6 years at the pace of his early career to even get close, which even at that time was stated as unlikely. One player approaching the end of his career is clearly distinct from the 3 most productive offensive players and the 3-4 most productive pitchers all concurrently being in the decline stage as we have had with the Phillies over the last couple years.

Who would have thought that Bernie Williams would have a better career than David Wright.

Oh wait, I did.

David Wright has played 500 fewer games than Williams. Despite that, his career numbers are better than Bernie Williams in the following categories:

Batting average
Slugging percentage
OPS
OPS+
Wins Above Replacement
WAR/7 (wins above replacement for a player's seven best season)
Stolen bases
Stolen base percentage
All star game appearances
MVP votes

He also wasn't a terrible liability in the field like Williams was for most of his career.

So you are saying David Wright had a better career than Williams?

I'm saying that if I had to choose between a 21 year old David Wright and a 21 year old Bernie Williams, I would choose Wright.

WAR/7, Jesus.....what will these nerds create next?

The saber stuff has its place. It can be valuable. But these cats that live and die with it are too much.
