Massive result today for Ireland as they beat Germany 1-0. They have secured 3rd place in Group D and a playoff spot.

In the same group, Scotland were denied a chance to win and stay alive by Poland (a late goal finished the game 2-2). Next up on Sunday is a decisive Poland-Ireland match in Warsaw with both teams on 18 points.

Either team automatically qualifies with a win, leaving the loser to face a two-leg playoff against another 3rd-place finisher from a different group. Ireland can also go through if they draw 2-2 or higher.

Watched that Ireland game on watchespn today. Nothing better than live sports while on conference calls. Germany was the better team with 5 legit scoring chances, Ireland had maybe 1.5 legit chances. Ireland converted theirs, Germany didn't.

Would be great if Ireland could steal a win against Poland and avoid the playoff.

Brazil-Chile in an early 2018 qualifier live right now on BeIN sports. Nice to channel surf during MLB commercials

I adopted Northern Ireland as my team for shits and giggles, and unexpectedly, they qualified.

Shame Scotland couldn't hold on. Ireland would have guaranteed themselves a place in the tourney with any tie had that happened.

Wasn't the goal scorer the same guy who scored a similar goal vs Barça in the champs league for Celtic a couple years back? Dude has got some afterburners.

Between Ireland/France rugby World Cup (winner avoids New Zealand in the qtrs) and the Euro vs Poland, Sunday will be a day to be wearing the green for sure. And will be starting EARLY out here on the west coast.

Only $25 or so. Less than what you'd pay in beer tab at a bar. I'll, in true alcoholic fashion, have my barstool staked out at 8 am pst.

No I think that was Tony Watt. Shane Long has always played professionally in England.

Scottish soccer has been in decline for decades. The national team as well as Celtic and Rangers had some great teams in the 1960s-1980s.

Making the Rugby World Cup PPV is a massive error.
I agree, but then with the US losing 64-0 to SA, not sure how many Americans are watching...

... but in all honesty, we're living a charmed life in the US now in terms of watching major international sports. We can watch for free very single BPL game on TV or on-line. FS1/FS2 now have select Bundesliga games, and BeIN Sports has occasional La Liga and Seria A games. We can watch many EURO 2016 games for free as well. And, while the Rugby World Cup is mostly PPV, all US games, all Semi Finals and Final Games are "free".

Go back to 1916 and suppose that Ireland doesn't decide to fight against the United Kingdom. How good would that team be? Top three?

In what sport? Soccer? No, not top 3. Rugby, they'd be #1 or #2 every year.

Kj, it is absolutely on the radar. If I have a good 6 months it's happening. Had an invite to go to London this weekend for the rugby but had to pass. Killed me.

Not just the Republic but Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales compete independently in soccer, rugby and several other sports. In rugby they do tour as the "British Lions" (no Rep.) but that is the exception.

F you! Ireland is a nation into itself. Britain out of Ireland. It's akin to the US annexing Canada.

Maybe he meant NI and RofI as one team, not all of UK? UK does competed as one team in Olympics, though.

Ireland is losing 2-1 late first half. Very physical game, Poland looks impressive

Lewandowski is the best striker in the world right now.

Germany being held by Georgia, 0-0!

Which games today have the most on the line? Looks like Italy-Norway, Belgium-Israel, and Holland-Czech are on FS1, FS2, and ESPN2

Holland. They have a lifeline today. Massively underperforming, albeit with an unhealthy squad.
