Iverson Documentary

Iverson's is a typical American athlete story. Elite talent. From the ghetto. Convicted felon as a teenager. He got a second chance through a clemency pardon and went to G'Town for 2 years. Even though he was the first player to ever leave school early under John Thompson, few could blame him for going pro - he was the top pick in the draft.

Iverson's biggest mistake was taking his talent for granted. He drank constantly, ignored practice and basketball activities beyond game days, hung out with his scumbag entourage and blew through his money.

One fortunate thing for him was that his talent overcame most of his personal problems. It's actually amazing that he lasted 10 strong seasons at the 76ers, and was able to hang on for another 4 years as a journeyman. But what he needed to do was adopt a clean lifestyle and stay healthy. I am sure someone told him this at some point in his career. He had an incredible will to succeed on the court and could play injured, but there is simply no way that can be sustained if your life off the court is a circus.

At least he always had good parking when he went out night considering he simply parked in Handicap spots.

Sums up AI as a person - a piece of shit

all philly cops have AI horror stories. my uncle was a detective in west philly and AI was pretty tight with the black mob that hung on city line by the 5th Ave store, tgif, and that area just before 76 on Rt 1. said AI was basically banned from every hotel in philly and most restaurants, those why he chose TGIF nightly.

Spent 12K per month on car insurance alone....

And...

"...one day a member of his entourage couldn’t remember where they parked their car at the airport so his mother Ann simply bought a new SUV on the way back to the house."

Because this thread is taking on a savage tone, let's balance it out with this anecdote from the bankruptcy proceedings for Nicholas Cage:

"In 2007 alone, Cage's shopping spree entailed the purchase of three additional residences at a total cost of more than $33 million; the purchase of 22 automobiles (including 9 Rolls Royces); 12 purchases of expensive jewelry; and 47 purchases of artwork and exotic items."

That's a new Rolls Royce every 40 days.

More on Cage:

15 Personal Homes: Cage's property portfolio included an $8 million castle in England that he plunged millions more into remodeling. He never spent a single night in the castle. He also bought a second castle in Bavaria, two multi-million dollar mansions in New Orleans, a $17.5 million palace in Bel Air, a $10 million Malibu beach house, a 24,000 square foot home in Rhode Island, a mansion in Las Vegas and a getaway property on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

A Private Island: Apparently having a house on Paradise Island didn't fill Nick's penchant for the Bahamas because in 2006 he spent $7 million on a 40 acre private island 85 miles south of Nassau.

Four Luxury Yachts: Cage at one time owned four luxury yachts including one called Sarita that had 12 master bedrooms that was valued at $20 million.

A Fleet of Exotic Cars: At its peak, Nick Cage's garage contained dozens of high end luxury vehicles including nine Rolls Royces. He owned an extremely rare $500 thousand Lamborghini and a $1 million Ferrari Enzo, one of only 349 produced. Cage also owned 30 motorcycles.

A $30 Million Gulfstream Private Jet

Other: Nearly 50 expensive works of art, dozens of jewels, a 67 million year old dinosaur skull, two extremely rare albino King Cobras.

Difference between Cage and Iverson though - Cage can still command millions with his acting career. Iverson has very little to show for his lavish spending because quite a lot of it involved strip clubs and paying for his entourage.

AI must have put a few strippers through Devry University or Venus Beauty School. guy was like the Robin Hoods of the Hood.

“Allen was the first guy that showed me how NBA players spend money in strip clubs,” said former team-mate Matt Barnes. “That guy went. HARD. He’d throw so much money, and this was when I was first in the league, that I used to take my foot and scoop the shit under my chair and either re-throw it or put some in my pocket. He’d throw $30,000, $40,000 every time we went. I’m like, ‘You realize what I can do with this money?’”

How is Iverson the typical American athlete? I'd say most guys at the top get there through treating their bodies right and making good decisions. Iverson is a freakishly talented exception. Even though not every guy stays a millionaire the rest of their lives, they are usually still better off than where they started.

Yeah I wrote that wrong - what I meant was typical for Iverson's situation. If you grow up poor and you make a lot of money quickly, you are not all of a sudden subscribing to the WSJ and becoming educated in private equity. You are very likely blowing your cash foolishly.

AI: Ok Cuz, you only got 3 G's at da club but you gotta take care of yo' side-piece who's gonna be yo' waitress in VIP, that slut stripper you gonna bang in the bat'room lata, bottle service for ya homie's birt'day, and you got three random bitches wit' you. How you gonna split dis' cash up - you gotta get drunk AND laid by all five bitches. Oh, and you can use dis' here dolla-sign ring as a, uh, uh, uh, you know....

Student: Variable?

AI: Dat's it!

AI - you have six kids with 4 different women. How much child support do you owe if youre paying each one 25% of 50% off your income?

Student: too much

AI - correct, any amount is too much. they get nothing.

Doesn't fix the problem. Only masks it.
