recruiting 2012

Or1on, earlier you mentioned Josh Lapron and Mike Marsella. Are they the two milers you are referring to? Any word on either of them? Besides being a decent XC man, (13th is not bad), what else appeals about Wilson?

Or1on, Macedo ran at Nike Nationals. She was in 5th place at about 2/3 of the way in the race before fading and pulling out. Probably some type of injury issue led to the DNF.

Report from local newspaper said that she fell very early in the race and worked like hell to get back up into it. It was too much for her and she DNF'd.

I could see that happening especially after Macedo and Haley Pierce ran themselves ragged in that race earlier this season. I didn't know she fell early in the race but i definitely remember seeing her close to the front of the pack later in the race.

This is from the LetsRun message board, for what it's worth:

Yes, that's the story I am hearing as well: Kelsey Margey to Villanova.

"Josh Lapron and Mike Marsella"
------------------------------------------------
I've seen unconfirmed stuff about Lampron visiting G'tn and Michigan with Stan a possibility also. He didn't make the Globe's AS CC team Sunday so he must have had a inj. year?

Marsella won the NE title and did ok at Nike even though he's said to have finished the season ill and inj. Haven't seen anything about his choices.
???My old DyeStat ID doesn't work anymore. They must have purged their old membership when they switched to ESPN.

The two are likely to face each other several times @ 1m in Feb. and if either get in an open race at Harv. or BU should get in the 402-4:04 area.

In the above ^ list the kid from Maine asked out of his Lock Haven commit and has reopened his recruiting.

Good question re scholarships. I wish I knew the answer. We know that these guys are either already done or will be come June:

Matt Gibney
Keith Capecci
Hugo Beamish
Brian Long
Brian Tetreault

I assume that Gibney had a full ride (?), that Beamish had a sizeable portion if not a full, that Long (who originally committed to Louisville then switched to Villanova) was on $$, and that Capecci (who was a national recruit out of HS and originally went to Arizona) had $$. Hard to know about Tetreault (who certainly earned some sort of scholarship the way he ran last track seasons). These scholarships are chopped up into pieces and all the above is speculation, of course. If close to accurate, though, there should be multiple fulls available on the men's side.

Gina has gotten verbals from Angel Piccirillo (confirmed) and Kelsey Margey (rumor). If we assume that both these girls got a full ride, then they'll replace (money-wise, that is) Sheila Reid and perhaps some combination of Verdier and Ward, who are at the end of their run at Villanova and may be on $$.

T&F and XC scholarship management requires an NFL salary cap expert. They're broken down into partials, combined with other sources of funding, and it's difficult to put the pieces back together. If someone here has a handle on this stuff, they're a better man than me.

BTW, the Kelsey Margey (Long Island, NY) verbal to Villanova is confirmed -- took place during the first week of November, evidently.

Personal Bests
1000 Meter Run 2:51.33
1500 Meter Run 4:23.82
3000 Meter Run 10:02.10
4000 Meter Run 14:35.70
5000 Meter Run 17:25.40
600 Meter Dash 1:40.28
800 Meter Run 2:10.01
Long Jump 15-2
One Mile Run 4:43.91

LSU-nit,

Aren't Margey's 1500 and mile times faster than Emily L's in high school? I get the feeling that she might be better in track than Xcountry, but I don't know much at all about good times at longer distances.

I'd be willing to bet that Gina has more because of Title IX.

You are correct, Randy Foye. Gina has 5.4 more scholarships each in cross country and track than does Marcus.

Here are the numbers:

Men’s Cross Country
NCAA D1: 12.6
NCAA D2: 12.6
NAIA: 5
NJCAA: 30

Women’s Cross Country
NCAA D1: 18
NCAA D2: 12.6
NAIA: 5
NJCAA: 30

Men’s Track
NCAA D1: 12.6
NCAA D2: 12.6
NAIA: 12
NJCAA: 20

Women’s Track
NCAA D1: 18
NCAA D2: 12.6
NAIA: 12
NJCAA: 20

Just to be clear the CC limits are included in the 18 for T&F, not separately.

Yes, I think that is correct -- I assume, for example, that there are not 36 scholarships (18+18) for Villanova women's T&F/XC. It's 18 divided up between XC, indoor and outdoor. Can someone confirm?

For example, I am here at LSU, which is a sprinters' program. Even though LSU has a cross country team (which is not terribly competitive and not a priority for LSU's program), I doubt that there are any XC runners on scholarship here on either the men's or women's team. I used to know several of the LSU distance guys and they all told me that they were here competing on their own dime. Dennis Shaver (LSU coach) saves all his $$$ for T&F and -- even there -- nary a distance runner on the track is on money.

If the assumption above is correct, then Gina has 18 full scholarships to chop up and distribute to athletes in XC, indoor and outdoor T&F. Marcus has 12.6. Inasmuch as Villanova costs a ton of money to attend, one sees the difficulty the coaches (especially Marcus) have in building a team with depth.

I mean, If Marcus/Gina could get the likes of Xavier Carter, Richard Thompson and Trindon Holliday like Dennis Shaver has, they would probably seriously consider it.

Kelsey Margey is a wonderful addition to the VU women's team. I think she will be a force at the mile and a contributor at XC. She seems to be an outstanding athlete with a lot of upside. She was a soccer and lacross player before she took-up track during the 2010 indoor season. In fact she was still competing in lacross during the 2010 outdoor season. Note that her top 800 time (2:10.01) was run as a soph. Was surprised she didn't run faster as a junior. Interesting that Angel and she finished one, two in mile at Penn Relays, last year. And they seems to have gotten along well on their visits to VU.

As for athlets $$, count Apwah as additional $$ that will be available next year.

Agree that is difficult for the men to ever win NCAA championship. VU is expensive and its difficult to be successful at both track and XC. Still, though, it is possible. The key is not only recruiting well, but to get some "assistance" from the other programs - football, basketball. There are a great number of sprinters and jumpers who are also football stars. I believe the Heisman winner, Robert Giffin, was a star hurdler in HS. Some great weight guys are football linemen. I believe Najee Glass (NJ) is interesed in combining football (WR) and track. Wasn't Xavier Carter also a football WR?

The NCAA seems to be biased towards sprinters. Compare the number of events.

Still it is great VU has Margey. Now if VU can just convince Wilson, life will be good.

Recall there was some controversy during 2011 indoor season where Margey fouled Wilson and was DQ. Margey acknowledge mistake , apologized to Wison and cried. Will that have any affect on Wilson's decision?

Note: over the past three track seasons, VU has gotten some of the top HS milers in U.S. - Lipari (2010), Chapman (2011), Piccirillo & Margey (2012). Maybe more ...

Update on Rebekah Greene (NZL): Took the New Zealand Secondary Schools T&F Championship in 1500 (4:21.39, NR)and 3000 (9:23.42, NR). It appears that both finals were on the same day.

Track can be good for football players. There have to be some pretty fast players on the football team. It doesn't make sense that Villanova can't even field a sprint medley at Penn.

As for Xavier Carter: Yes he played football at LSU and because Najee Glass is headed to Florida, it looks like he may get an opportunity to.

Seb Coe, as for "Wilson," I assume you're referring to Ajee Wilson, not Chestnut Hill's Dustin Wilson (13th at Foot Locker Nationals). The latter Wilson has committed to run at Columbia. I got the impression from someone very close to the coaching staff that VU did not go after Dustin Wilson very hard -- either he (Wilson) wasn't interested in VU from the start or he (Marcus) wasn't interested in Wilson from the start. Either way, he wasn't pursued very seriously.

As for Ajee Wilson, some news from late last month.

Ajee Wilson from NJ, a Future Olympian

Ajee Wilson (Neptune, N.J.) has been named the 2011 Youth Athlete of the Year by USA Track & Field’s Youth Committee. Wilson will be honored on Saturday, December 3, at the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in St. Louis, Mo.The event is held in conjunction with USA Track & Field’s 2011 Annual Meeting.

The highlight of Wilson’s year came in winning the girl’s 800 meters at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France. Wilson unleashed her kick with 200m remaining and separated herself from the field to win in 2:02.64. Wilson’s victory marked the first time Team USA medaled in the event at the Youth Championships.

Wilson’s championship win not only netted her a new personal best, but also rewrote the New Jersey scholastic record books. Wilson bettered Hall of Famer Joetta Clark’s previous record of 2:03.67 in both the semi-finals and finals.

After winning both the 800m (2:09.73) and 1600m (4:54.31) at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group Championships in her school’s division, Wilson missed out on the New Jersey Meet of Champions and other post-season meets due to a sprained ankle.

But the time off did nothing to hamper Wilson’s season as she came back to win the World Youth Track & Field Trials in 2:09.39 to punch her ticket to the France.

“At first I thought I had won the award just for my association,” Wilson said. “But when I learned it was the national award I was shocked. There were so many great athletes nominated - a lot of my teammates from the World Youth Championships in France.”

"She is a great talent, not only on the track, but also as a person," said USATF Youth Athletics Committee Chair Lionel Leach. "She is very personable and an outstanding athlete. We look forward to seeing her represent our country well in the future."

interesting article from Wilmington (DE) News Journal on Macedo. Amazing to believe that in 1 race this fall, Macedo and Pierce raced so hard against each other that they both blew up at the end. Two tough girls that seem to be very competitive. Too bad neither is coming to the Main Line.

Macedo

Rebekah Greene putting up some great times. At the New Zealand Secondary School Championships, Rebekah ran 4:21.39 in the 1500 and 9:23.42 in the 3000. High elite talent for sure. As a comparison, Footlocker winner Molly Seidel ran 4:28:36 and 9:43:67 (it should be noted that was last spring and Rebekah ran those times last week. Molly's times probably have/will improve)

Maybe I'm cynical, but aside from Blinks, have we had much luck with the New Zealanders?

Re: recruiting 2012 -- Megan Lacy to Stanford

Lacy to Stanford

From Wednesday's PhillyBurbs.com, 12/21/11:

Megan Lacy learned so much on her visit to Stanford University that she plans to spend the next four years there.

The Cherokee High School senior confirmed Wednesday that she has committed to the school in Palo Alto, Calif., and its cross country/track and field program. Lacy also considered Harvard, Princeton and Villanova.

Lacy was named the Burlington County Times Runner of the Year in cross country this past season, the third time she's earned that honor. She was the state Group 4 champion as a junior and senior, and also won two South Jersey Group 4 titles and two Burlington County Open titles.

"It was incredible," Lacy said of her visit to Stanford. "The weather is great out there. The school, of course, and the closeness of the team I liked. The academic and athletic environment combined is great."

Lacy qualified for the state Meet of Champions three times in cross country, placing sixth as a sophomore, fourth as a junior and seventh as a senior. Her time of 17:55 in winning the state Group 4 championship as a junior is the fastest at Holmdel Park for a Burlington County girl.

Lacy will join fellow New Jersey natives Molly McNamara (Red Bank Catholic graduate) and Sophia Ginez (South Brunswick) in the women's program. The Stanford men's team includes twin brothers Joe and Jim Rosa from West Windsor-Plainsboro North.

"Molly and I are pretty good friends, and that was a plus," Lacy said. "All the New Jersey people hung out together on my visit. It's nice to see familiar faces when you're that far away."

The Stanford women this fall placed third in the Pacific-12 Conference championship meet, third in the NCAA West Regional and 10th in the NCAA championships.

"Some seniors are leaving but it's a young team, and they're hoping to improve on what they did this year," Lacy said. "It's cool to be part of such a great team."

Lacy's decision came down to Harvard and Stanford, realizing the academic benefits of both.

"It was hard to decide," she said. "In what I want to study (applied mathematics), both schools are equal in what they have to offer. I just felt that Stanford was the best fit for me."

I guess the Mark English on the University of Dublin team is the same one Marcus was trying to recruit for Villanova. Anyone know why the "Irish Pipeline" seems to have dired up.

Yes -- English has been enrolled at Dublin City University (DCU) since August (along with his Letterkenny teammate Darren McBrearty). Marcus has been recruiting English heavily for well over a year. A Villanova optimist might spin it this way: English wanted to stay close to home for 2011-2012 as he gears up to try to make the Irish Olympic team and his enrollment at DCU is a "gap year" stop-over before he comes to the States for the 2012-2013 academic year. A Villanova pessimist would argue that English has made his decision not to come to the US at all and that he'll stay in Ireland regardless of his Olympic team quest. FWIW, I am leaning toward the latter interpretation. Providence and Oklahoma Stated successfully recruited talented Irish kids this past fall, but Ciara Mageean stayed home last year (and in fact went pro) and now both English and McBrearty stayed. DCU has in many ways adopted a US collegiate-style running program (as evidenced by the so-called "dream team" that is participating in the Millrose Games DMR).

In a recent interview English listed Eamonn Coghlan as one of his heroes (the others being Coe & Ovett) and the fact that Eamonn's son John three-four years ago decided to stay home and enroll at DCU despite some US collegiate offers (Iona & Providence, I believe) perhaps provided a model. The fact that the younger Coghlan actually improved his times markedly while at DCU (running 4:00.79 for the mile last June) and won a number of Irish titles perhaps made the DCU option look more attractive to others facing the choice of staying home or going to the States. The fact that Eamonn Coghlan is the honorary coach of the Irish "dream team" DMR squad for Millrose -- and that the DMR relay team includes his son John along with English and McBrearty -- is suggestive of something, I think. My guess -- and it's only a guess -- is that Eamonn is nowadays advocating the DCU option and is not keen on encouraging kids to head to the States.

If my memory serves correctly, the last Irish runner who was successfully recruited to Villanova was Richie Corcoran - and he graduated in 2008. One has to go further back to Geraldine McCarthy (who graduated in 2001), I think, on the women's side. Not much left of the Irish "pipeline," I'd say. The only pipeline Villanova can claim now is the one from Down Under.

I saw on the old Dyestat board "Lampron To Nova."
I looked around but saw nothing else. Josh had mentioned Stan, UM. I don't know if he ran CC this fall or not (assuming he didn't, didn't make all-scholastic).
Anyway, mile champ should have been a target and we'll look for a confirm if it's legit.

Reading the blog, it sounds like Angel P sounds excited about going to Villanova. That's always a good thing.

Re: recruiting 2012 - Lampron v Marsella

Or1on, read somewhere recently that Marsella is exactly one year younger than Lampron - 11/94 v 11/93. And he might be taller if what I read is true; 6'1" v 5'10". Marsella might be a better choice ...?

Re: recruiting 2012 - Lampron v Marsella

Based on comments on his twitter it sounds like Blinks is recruiting in NZ right now.

Re: recruiting 2012 - Down Under

What did Blincoe say about recruiting in New Zealand? There is not a lot of talent available in NZ. There is Rebekah Greene. She is amongst the best. Give her a four-year ride immediately. But after that … Julian Oakley (800, mile) has signed with Providence. Was VU on that one? There are two sprinters, but would VU pursue them - Josh Hawkins (110H, 200), Andrew Whyte [400 (46.9), 200 (21.9)]. For comparison, Alex Jordan (46.7), a year older, begins scholarship to Baylor in January.
If he were including Australia, now there are lots of options there. My favorites ? Alex Rowe (48.76, 1:46.28, 3:46.6 ), Jordan Williamsz (1:47.34, 3:40.96). Note: Kane Grimster, an up-and-coming junior, usually finished second to Williamsz during secondary school competition, is a frosh at Auburn . They are all born in ’92 like McEntee.

Re: recruiting 2012 - Mike Marsella

Finished second to Zavon Watkins, today, at New Balance games ? 4:15.31 to 4:14.51. Top two qualify for Millrose. Is VU pursuing either one?

Re: recruiting 2012 - Cameron Thornton

Recall that Marcus visited Whitefield Academy, last fall. Thornton chose Texas A&M. Again, Marcus is out there, but … Of course, Texas A&M vies for national championships and VU use to… VU was in good company. Arkansas, Virginia, Alabama, Stanford and Clemson were the other suitors being considered. Too often, though, VU is the bridesmaid … However, there is still some outstanding talent out there and one that I believe is truly outstanding that (to my knowledge) has not committed yet.

Espn/dye is out with their state runners and they've decided to make grades a factor which I think is odd considering we're thinking performance here.

I haven't seen anything on Lampron's start to the indoor season yet and Marsella began slowly with mile in Armory coming off rest from illness/inj in CC.

Marsella

I have seen Watkins since his freshman year, and since he always has been extremely muscular and mature for his age, I wonder about his ceiling. Laura Leff from WG is spectacular, and she is only a soph. If Chapman continues to improve, it might get us some in with the Syracuse stand outs.

Re: recruiting 2012 - Kelsey Margey

Is anything wrong with Kelsey Margey? Her indoor performance has been so-so, thus far, and at Millrose she was next-to-last ...

Recent Signings

Marcus recently (2/13) got a commitment from sprinter Alex Reber (Cherry Hill, NJ). He's got PRs of:

Gina also got a new commitment. On 2/12 Caitlin Bungo (Sewickley Academy in Sewickley, PA) signed on. She was 16th at PA State XC championships, 1:14 behind Angel Piccirillo. She's got the following PRs:

800 meters: 2:20.00
1500 meters: 4:46.27
1600 meters: 5:02.94

LSU-Nit or anyone else -- does anyone know if Blinco or Gina is doing any work to prepare to recruit the Under 17 Australian girl who has run 2:06 and 4:12?
