Banks entering into non recourse loans assume the risk that they cannot go after the sponsor if there is not a bad act. They get paid for it. Granted sometimes that risk can be passed to bondholders through securitization. If you don't want Trump trying to renegotiate terms of a busted deal, don't lend to him without recourse.

I am really confused by this thread, especially the long post by DMill that got a lot of likes for some reason. There are really people who intentionally don't save for college with the hopes that they can be poor enough to get some financial aid? But then you can take he money that you should have been saving for college, buy an investment property or a boat, and assume that the school you are asking for a discount from is going to just take your word for it?
News flash, college is expensive. Even if we become an Obama liberal paradise in 15 years, the good schools are always going to find a way to self select. Save your pennies from the day your kid is born and hope that you make enough money so that your kid doesn't end up at Rutgers.

In as much as a successful small business with write off opportunities using an accountant is cheating on your taxes. There is no rule against what I suggested. Colleges certainly have the means to go forensic if they chose to do so. They ask for a LOT of information going back at least 2 years. It's pages and pages of financial information. You are required to resubmit each year your child is at school. If you believe what the country's average household income is said to be, and if you believe that a household making 100K is in the top 10%, then you know most families are dealing with an untenable number as far as colleges. If you have the means to stash away vast sums of money, you probably don't need the help, nor will you want to release your assets to hide them in order to save 20K a year. Most people in the country are less than 90 days away from being out of cash, so most do not save much anyway and they are looking at somewhere between 175-275K per child over 4 years.

Actually, the financial aid system has many breaks from the taxpayers. Stafford, pell, etc. These are not only for public schools. You are a cheater and a clueless one at that.
