Allegations that a shared relationship Memphis AD Tom Bowen and Memphis coach Josh Pastner had with sports management company NextLevel Sports may have influenced the 10.6 million buyout clause Pastner negotiated in his 2013 contract extension. Bowen was represented by NextLevel when he was AD at San Jose State. Although he claims he severed his relationship with NextLevel in 2012, shortly after he was hired at Memphis, the Memphis Commercial Appeal shows that Bowen continued to speak at symposia run by NextLevel.
Memphis President "M. David Rudd said Tuesday in a statement the school is investigating conflict-of-interest allegations that have circulated in recent weeks about Bowen." according to the Commercial Appeal article. Rudd released a statement Tuesday that "The University of Memphis has been made aware of the accusations, and in accordance with University and TBR (Tennessee Board of Regent) policies, will immediately launch a comprehensive investigation...The University is in the process of retaining an outside source to conduct the review. Upon completion, a public statement will be made concerning the findings."

I guess a 37-30 record over the past two seasons have soured the fans and others to the young coach. After a 9-4 start this season, the team stumbled to a 10-11 finish. Will be interesting to see if this goes anywhere. Irrespective of this specific outcome, Pastner has to feel the heat.
