The students are in classes, but still no rosters posted on the university site
for 2012. What the hell is going on?

They never got around to posting rosters for the spring. I don't hold out much hope of seeing anything soon. Other fall sports have rosters up. Maybe villanovarunning will find something and post it. That seems to be the main source of news for track and xc.

excattguy,

There was nothing there this morning, but there was the sad news of the passing of
Charlie Stead VU 1959. He was a high jumper with a best of over 6'9",and he also ran
a leg on three Championship of America 4x440 at Penn. I really got to know Charlie
at conferences and conventions of educators; we probably met six or so times in cities
throughout the country. He was truly a class act in every respect.

Yes, I read that yesterday. That site is very informative. I'm hoping someone puts together a list of recruits for women and men and gets roster information.

Recruit We Missed

Blincoe just tweeted that one member of the incoming class is Maryland XC champion Kevin Corbusier (Loyola Bakersfield HS).

Re: Recruit We Missed

It's pretty cool that Villanova had a high jumper, the Olympic champion in the 1500 and the Olympic champion in the 400 on the same college mile relay.

Re: Recruit We Missed

TheFoyeEffect,

The other runner on that relay team that was placed on the Wall of Fame at Penn last year
was George Sydnor for Haverford High. He was a sprinter who probably ran about a 10;3
hundred. I still think he was one of the finest high school football players I have ever seen.
I thought he should have played football for us at VU.

Re: Recruit We Missed

Whitecat,
You must have learned learned your conversions @ St. Denis. Hell, when I play in Ireland converting Metres to Yards throws me and I always come up short. The Mercy's @ OMGC & STV must not have drilled me enough.
Congrats to you and the Bride of 48 yrs...... we will celebrate our 50th next year...the good Lord willin.

Re: Recruit We Missed

I think his son Willie did for a time. I think he transferred to Penn State. I could be wrong. My memory is a little hazy.

Re: Recruit We Missed

Chris Sydnor played FB at Penn State, not sure if there is a relation to Willie Sydnor?

Re: Recruit We Missed

I think I figured it out. George Sydnor had 3 sons: Reggie, Chris, and Willie.

Yes, novaclass of 90, Chris played FB at PSU. Willie played one year at Northwestern and three at Nova. I'm almost positive I remember him as a sprinter also.

Re: Recruit We Missed

Chris won the 100 and 200 at PIAA champs his senior year. Did some research. Looks like he is now living in Radnor and doing some track coaching to youth on the side.

Re: Recruit We Missed

villanovarunning has the 2012 Mid-atlantic rankings: men 2nd behind Georgetown and ahead of Princeton --- women 3rd behind Georgetown and Princeton. Still no rosters up on the Villanova website.

Re: XC rosters

And Georgetown's girls XC coach just bolted for Stanford.

Re: XC rosters

Who's going to take his place at Georgetown this late? I'd heard Stanford was after the PSU coach.

Re: XC rosters

I sent two emails to media relations asking for an update of the xc rosters. The first one I sent to one of the directors; the second one I sent to the person who handles xc.

villanovarunning has a list of the prominent freshmen for the men. I'm guessing that mean there might be more. I guess the women will be posted later.

Re: XC rosters

Although it has been up before, the frosh male recruits and their times are on Run Nova;
it seems like a promising group. The LadyCats will be up soon. Nothing yet on the university site.

Re: XC rosters

I'll take a stab at the top 7s (in rough order)

Sam McEntee
Mathew Mildenhall
Matt Kane
Rob Denault
Jordan Williamsz
Alex Tully
Greg Morrin/John Pickhaver/Chris O'Sullivan

Emily Lipari
Nicky Akande
Courtney Chapman
Megan Venables
Summer Cook
Angel Piccirillo
Ariann Neutts/Stephanie Schappert/Meghan Smith

Re: XC rosters

No quibble with the names suggested by FoyeEffect. Think Venables will be more important, this year.

Based on the names and times on Villanova Running, I am already thinking about DMR, 4xMile, and 4x800 at next year's Penn Relays. All three championships are very possible. DMR is pretty much defined - Williamsz (1200), Ellison (400), Fitzsimons (800), McEntee (1600). But what about 4x800 - Ellison, Wiliiamsz, Fitsimons and ? Or 4xMile - Mildenhall, Denault and ? Do you use McEntee and Williamsz on 4x800 and 4xmile? Or have Lampron/Tully and McEntee on 4xMile and Lampron/Brennan on 4x800? Brennan has run 49.5 (400). May be ready for sub 1:50 in 2013 ... Interesting.

Re: XC rosters

4xMile and DMR are sit and kick unless you put a couple guys up front who are willing to run devastating splits. I think 4x800 is actually our best chance because Williamsz: 1:47, Ellison: 1:47, FitzSimons: 1:48, McEntee: 1:49r. If you lead off with Williamsz or Ellison and get a 1:47 or so opening split, you could be set, and then run the fastest or second fastest person last.

Re: XC rosters

We need two ladyCats to step up in their sophomore year s Nikki did last year; I don't believe
that Venablles has run for us as she did in high school. I will be 77 years old and a retired teacher
for Penn next year; I plan to come down for about my 40th trip to Penn.

Re: XC rosters

WC, if you had to pick one, what would your all time Villanova Penn Relays moment be?

Re: XC rosters

Only scheduled meets I could find on the website list of events for all sports: Haverford 9/20, Paul Short 9/28, pre-nats 10/13, and Haverford Inv. 10/19

I'm not WC, but I have some. no particular order

Brian O'Keefe's unexpected (at least to me) 3:42 (approx.) leg of the 4x 1500 followed in the same race by O'Sullivan's anchor over Arkansas for the win. It came after the disappointment of the DMR the day before.

800m specialist Brad Sumner's leg of the 1500 (also about 3:42). Finn Kelly, Kyle Watson, and Louie Quintana brought it home for another unexpected win since they were not the favorites. I think Watson and Quintana were Frosh.

Frosh Lauren Searby's DMR anchor against Tennessee's great Joetta Clark.

I'm doing this from memory since I don't have access to the archives.

Re: XC rosters

TFE,

The Larry James 43.9 anchor which now translates to 43.5. I have no archives either.

Re: XC rosters

Unfortunately, I'm young enough that my greatest memory is Matthew Gibney outkicking Dorian Ulrey and Miles Batty in '11

Re: XC rosters

TFE,

Although I actually live in upstate NY, I live as close to NYC as I do to VU. Where actually
is Van Cortlandt Park?

I was aware that the Cardinal Men's coach had left for UK but I didn't know the Georgetown w/coach had gone out to Palo Alto. That is interesting.

I could drop a few pros' names but it probably wouldn't mean anything until I hear what they are thinking about the position and a poss' for some overlapping duties?

I have to say I don't like the schedule becoming a series of Inv's rather than what it used to be. Most of the power schools pick out four or so plus the BE and Regional and that's the season. It just seems like you are going at it against the same A-list of schools week after week. Maybe that's not a bad thing?

----------------------------------------------

My brother ran at VCP many times, the Manhattan Col HS Inv. in particular. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Cortlandt_Park If mem serves --I wasn't around-- Nova won the 65 NCAA there which I believe had superstar talent Gerry Lindgren/WSU getting the Ind. title.

If it was the Georgetown head track coach job, I would say that Matt Centrowitz were a shoo-in, but since it's not, it could be anyone.

The women"s roster is up, but I didn't see the men's roster. I guess it'll be up soon.

Information on the men's roster situation is a bit strange. If you go to the xc 2011 roster, some of the information has been updated and some has not.

ie -- the 2011xc roster lists Mildnehall as a SR with JR eligibility, but if you click on his name, the information it brings up now includes the updated 2012 outdoor season and lists him as a GR with SR eligibility.

The situation is the same for Ryan Sheridan, Denault, and others.

On the other hand Gibney, who only had eligibility for xc last fall, has not been removed.

Maybe someone will take the time to put together a roster for 2012 soon.

Those with eligibility for 2012 but whose information has not been updated to include this past outdoor season are Joesph Capecci, Harris, Lee, Long, O'Connell, and McEntee. Everyone else on the roster has been updated and, I presume, is on the team this fall. Those from the 2011 roster who are out of eligibility are Gibney and Tetreault.

Even though he is not updated for last outdoor season, McEntee is mentioned in the preview about the 2012 season.

Of course, the new runners don't appear.

No freshman yet, but Andrew Golato a DIII All-American transfer from Haverford who's a 1:51 800 guy and has run 3:57 in the 1500 is on the roster now. 1:51 is fast enough to have a potential spot on a relay, if only at the conference meet.
