Lost So Far in Today's Discussion

Lots of anger and frustration on the Board for a 15 point road win without your starting big man. I understanding it. This was one of the sloppiest, poor offensive performances of the last three years and the Cats were lucky it was against a bad St. John's team.

However, considering the faster pace of play and more possessions and the twenty turnovers, Nova playing without Ochefu gave up 53 points. That is some very solid defense (even against a bad offensive opponent.)

The Cats dominated the glass (even without Ochefu.)

But the missing point relates to the offense and some of it is cause for concern.

The Cats (other than Jenkins) shot poorly from the perimeter but for the first time appeared afraid to shoot. Hart was not even looking for his three ball and there was a sequence where they did the pass up an open three for a better shot but NOBODY would shoot.

The lack of Ochefu and confidence from three lead to dribble drives, which did get the Cats to the FT line and got Hart his points. But in general the Cats struggled to beat their man off the dribble. (even Hart had five turnovers). The amount of try to drive without a back up plan and panic was scary. All three lead guards (Arch, Brunson and Booth) suffered from it.

That does not bode well for the future if the offense becomes drive and panic, rather than drive and kick or drive and dish. Here is another missing point. St. John's despite being awful on offense and undersized, actually is a fairly athletic team that does a good job of stopping dribble penetration and/or channeling it to a shot blocker. In that regard and in the hustle category the Johnnies are not bad. This kept them in the game.

What does this mean going forward, I don't know. Creighton is not a particularly good defensive team and the Cats should be much more effective off the dribble against them. Hopefully, Ochefu is back and the Pavilion rims provide more confidence. Arch will bounce back but at least one of Brunson and Booth need to become productive (or at least decent) or some losses are on the horizon.

The facial frustrations, in my opinion were more from guys trying to force plays and failing. It made the guy who made the mistake frustrated but also frustrated open teammates. This is fixable. If a chemistry meltdown occurs it usually effects the defense. Defense, rebounding and effort were there even if focus was lacking.

Ochefu needs to return to form and shooting confidence needs to be regained.

Ben Simmons

He has an incredible skill set and size, but I have seen him play five times now and if everyone is talking about him being the number one pick in the draft he seems to never make plays down the stretch or even want the ball in his hands. Today against Oklahoma, he did not touch the ball on LSU last 7 possessions and seems content to set screens and let his teammates take control

Would Really Like to See in the Big East...

Dayton's head coach Archie Miller. Not the Flyers, their coach. Watching La Salle at Dayton right now and this Flyer squad will blow the Explorers off the court. Miller gets more out of less than any coach I can remember. The Flyers are a solid squad this season with Steve McElvene in the low post, Kendall Pollard and DyShawn Pierre on the wing and Scoochie Smith and Kyle Davis in the back court. He has been at Dayton for 5 years (1st HC gig) compiling 107-50. Those early seasons when he had to work with Gregory's leftovers, were brutal, but winning. Last season he took a squad with no one taller than 6-6 to the Sweet Sixteen. This season shows he can recruit.

If he gets this squad to the Elite Eight, it will be very difficult to see him not draw serious attention in the off season. Wish DePaul (Marquette) or St. John's had been on him earlier. He is the kind of coach you hate to face, but love if he is coaching your guys.

Our recent success and fan base

Wanted to start a thread and see if others are seeing similar trends or observations because that's all it is right now. Was at the Nova game on Saturday and bumped into a few people I know locally who were there with their kids. All of their kids were decked out in new Nova gear (I am surprised the tags weren't still on). None of these guys had any Nova affiliation and here they have 6 10 year olds in Arch and Brunson jerseys. 2 years ago you wouldn't have seen that at the WAC, and I am seeing it more and more even when just out. Sure we have some loyal fans who aren't alumni, but not to any significant degree when you talk about say a UConn (where it seems the entire state roots for them). This is not to say we are getting to that level but to say I am seeing organic growth here. I can only surmise is because of this perfect storm

Big Items
1. Absolute domination of the Big East since inception and the high NCAA seeding that went along with it.
2. Absolute pathetic showing by the Philly pro sports teams.

Smaller items
1. Fox deal. Its not so much we are on TV all the time (since most people can't find the channel or even know it exists) but the promos on the main Fox channel are by far more helpful in reaching more people.

Right now our fan base is growing but we need to grow it faster this is where Mark has to play a big role. The pro teams wont stink forever (at least I hope not) so now is the time to strike. A deep run in March/April would really help but I bet programs could be put in place now to take advantage of this situation. Once you have the fan base your ask for donations becomes much easier. Thoughts?

Early Roll Call For St. John's @ MSG

I will be there. Just trying to get a feel for what kind of turnout we will have this Sunday. Obviously there are A LOT of Villanova people in the NYC area, and for the most part we represent well, but considering St. John's is such a non-factor this year, wasn't sure if people would rather spend their Sunday doing something else besides watching what should be a blowout. Hoping there will be more Nova fans than SJU fans.

this weekend in the Big East

8:00 PM SETON HALL at Creighton Omaha, Ne. (Fox Sports Net) (Creigh 68% win per kenpom)

Jan 31, 2016

12:00 AM Villanova at St. John's New York, NY (Fox) (Villanova 95%)

.........

Butler is sitting at 3-5 in BE conference play - they have already between DePaul twice and St. John's. Two games against Marquette and one more against St. John's remain as games against the 3 bottom feeders in the league. Butler needs to start getting road wins and wins against better teams if they want to get to the NCAA Tournament. 3-6 with the only wins being DePaul(2) and St. John's puts Butler WAY behind the other BE teams looking to dance. In other words - Bulldogs really need this win. Marq won at Providence and swept St. John's - if they beat Butler today they jump Butler in the standings and possibly in NCAA bid chances??

X should handle DePaul - if not, they should exit the Top 10 of the AP Poll.

Unfortunately Prov @ GTown and SHU @ Creigh are on at the same time. You may want to watch one and DVR the other to watch when the other ends. As someone who can't stand Georgetown, I would like to see Providence clean their clock - the silver lining is that if the Hoyas pull out the W, it gives Villanova a 3 game lead in the Loss column over the Friars (the one team that has beaten 'Nova in league play so far).

After gagging at Georgetown, Creighton is back at home with a chance to pick up a solid win over SHU (who they beat by 15 in NJ earlier this year). If Creighton wins they move to 6-3 and knock the Hall down to 4-5 ... that would be an interesting result given that SHU is viewed as the more likely NCAA Tournament entry.

PC-Gtown

Who are you guys rooting for?

Prov up 10 already on the road. I want PC to stay very high in the rankings to help our league. I just don't want them to surpass us.
I find it near impossible to root for Gtown. I might root for the Monmouth bench over them. And their BE record is so misleading beating up on the bottom 2. They will come down to earth eventually.

I'm rooting for PC
