Recruiting Violation Scenario

Interested in people's thoughts on a scenario that happened with a player currently in college.

A player had signed with a mid major program. The HS player attended a private school. Circumstances happened and the family couldn't pay their tuition for the 2nd semester of the kid's senior season. From what I was told, the family made no demands. The University the player signed with wrote the check to pay the tuition so the player could continue attending HS and therefore graduate.

Thoughts? Is that dirty? Do you feel either/both sides should be punished if it came to light?

OT - Boston

Any of the board members current or former residents of Boston?

I'm going to be spending some time up there during 'nova basketball season - any decent game watches up there? I'll be mostly around the back bay.

Any other suggestions for places to eat/things to do/etc would be welcome as I'm not familiar with the city at all.

Anyone want to buy my season ticket package

I signed up years ago and my number finally came up. By now my situation has changed a lot and I no longer can attend more than about 1 game (I'm in Florida for Jan- March and traveling in December).

If interested in buying the whole package at my cost -$1465 (well maybe $1365 since I would get the tax benefit of the seat donation) email me off line at vu68@yahoo.com. by October 4. We can work out the logistics then.

If I decline again (I declined last year), I go to the bottom of the list. My deadline to reply to Nova is Oct 7.

I'm not interested in making any money on this, but I'd like to see the tickets go to a board member rather than just the next person on the list. I figure a board member is actually likely to stand up and cheer.

James Shields signs with San Diego

4 years between $72-78 million. In today's market holding it 4 years isn't awful. From Joel Sherman below:

1. San Diego arguably has been the most aggressive team trying to trade for the Phillies' Cole Hamels, who is younger and better than Shields. However, Hamels has at least four years and $96 million left on his contract, and it could go higher depending if he triggers vesting option provisions. Plus, to get Hamels, San Diego would have to give up elite prospects. All of their wheeling-and-dealing has depleted the system, yet the Padres did not surrender three prized farmhands: catcher Austin Hedges, pitcher Matt Wisler and outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
However, because the Royals put the qualifying offer on Shields, San Diego would lose the 13th pick in the draft by signing of Shields.

OT -- Athlete Philanthropy

Interesting NYT Article on developing trend of athletes giving back to their colleges:
1) gotta love Draymond Green, and Izzo . Michigan State one of the only teams not named Nova I can root for, at least a little
2) Other than Randy Foye Foundation, have not heard of others from the Wright era being visible, and none directly tied to the school since Kittles/Tim Thomas. Small sample size but still a little surprising given the 'family' emphasis, unless we just don't hear about it
3) Surprised to see the dysfunctional program mess that is JT III led Georgetown, having success in this area.
4) Add this topic to the growing list of hurdles for small schools like Nova trying to hold serve v the vast resources of the bigs (ie should some protocol develop for NBA players to be expected to give back).
5) One more reason a professional athletic director is key, Jay and team make it easy, but you still need a closer. Hope we got one!

Phillies-Mets

Great game last night. I did not realize how terrible Colon was against anyone other than the NL East. How can you pitch him in the playoffs? I don't believe Duda is this good but h/t to him for hitting a oppo boppo off a 99 mph Giles fastball. I am really hoping the Phillies sweep and are on the way to avoiding 100 loses and keeping the Mets from home field over the Dodgers.
