Presidents Cup

The US team should be favored to win the cup this year. I'm interested to see the pairings they play with and how the new "collaboration and transparency" that the crybabies say Tom Watson didn't embrace last time makes them better putters.

Please Consider Helping Out

Over the past eighteen or so years of doing VUSports (and my predecessor site) I have had the pleasure of meeting many great Villanova people. Many of them are accomplished, successful people that I admire for their intelligence, business savvy, sense of morality, hard-work, dedication, or some other stand-out trait.

One of the people who combines many of these traits and truly stands out among the cream of the Villanova crop for me is a long-time VUSports member, nova97. A lot of you may know him or are aware of his achievements. His perseverance and dedication to his family are amazing.

I had the opportunity to catch up with him this past weekend at an event benefitting MPS and I realized it has been probably 4 or 5 years since I last got out to one of the MPS fund-raisers that he has run. While I was busy grinding away at what I do - he has been grinding away at his job (and all of its associated travel requirements), caring for his two boys that are stricken with MPS III, and working countless hours to raise money and awareness of MPS III (Sanfillipo syndrome). He has literally climbed mountains for this cause and his dedication and efforts have helped get research to the point where gene therapy and other treatment options are now being tested and made available. His two sons battle day-to-day with MPS but have been blessed with as great a father as any kid could ever ask for.

In a show of Villanova-style support for nova97, please consider participating in the 6th Annual Beat MPS Golf Tournament on Saturday Oct 17th at Sugarloaf Golf Club in PA. If you can't make it to the event, contributing to the cause is a great way not only to help out nova97s two boys and his family but also other children and families who live with MPS every day. Contributing money would be great and I encourage it. But I think that it would mean the world to nova97 to see a large Villanova presence at the event. Sign up for a foursome with some of your friends (from on or off the 'Nova Nation board). If you want to join me in a foursome and show your support - let me know in this thread or email me (for those who don't post but only read). If you know any Villanova associated "celebs" who you think would be interested in participating - put a bug in their ear and try to motivate them to help this cause as well.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

PS: Given the location of this event we may need to set up a "post party" at one of Beefer's neighborhood bars.

Painter news I heard over the weekend

was at a wedding near Hershey and a lot of people there live in Hershey and see Painter a lot. Heard he played JV football and was the QB!!! Wow. 6'10" QB. Then his dad got fired as the JV coach so Dylan was pissed and didn't want to play football anymore so did not play varsity. Also heard the giuards on his team are not very good so many teams will be packing it in against DP this year. all I heard though was how great a kid he is and hard worker and he really was torn between PSU and Nova. He really wanted to be on a great team and in a great program. He also has a younger brother who is a freshman who is like 6'3" and 230 lbs.

Ripoff Artists

I just heard the Beastie Boys on the radio and whenever I hear them I think they sound like Run DMC impersonators. They made a lot of money by stealing someone else's act. There are a lot out there. Carlos Mencia is supposed to appropriate other comics' jokes. Up for discussion: the biggest ripoff artists.

Here's some off the top of my head: Beastie Boys, Limp Bizkit (Rage Against the Machine), Dropkick Murphys (Pogues), The Offspring (80s punk, Murphy's Law). More will come to mind.

Putin rubbing Obama's nose in it again

I"m far from a foreign policy expert but appears Putin's spiking the football on Obama again. Right as they are to meet he sends Russian planes to bomb CIA backed rebels in Syria. Tells Obama to stand down. Appears our foreign policy over there is a complete mess. SPG, this seems like it should be right up your alley. Can someone educate me beyond what I read about on Drudge etc...?

Omari Tidbit

So I fished this bass tournament Saturday and ran into a guy wearing a "Royalton basketball" hat, which is where Spellman played for two years here in Ohio, as we were tossing back our fish after weigh in. I told him I noticed his hat, and said "you must be familiar with Omari Spellman." He said, "oh yeah" and didn't really give me much more. I explained I'm a Villanova fan and was just curious if he had any thoughts on him. He said "he does some amazing things on a basketball court you can't teach" and I got the sense he didn't want to speak about it for some reason. Thought maybe he wasn't that friendly, so I decided to just wrap it up and said "so we're getting a good one?" and he said "if he can stay eligible" and that was the end of it.

Got the guy's name from another guy in our bass club. Turns out this guy was the head coach at North Royalton while Spellman was there. Sounds he's a little salty at Omari for transferring and leaving him without his stud player. Either that, or Jay may have his hands full.

interesting little recruiting story from Coach Mass

when Rollie was introducing me to his assistants and I started ribbing Calabria about his record against Villanova while he was at UNC, Calabria asked Rollie where Kittles was from. When he said Louisiana, one of the other assistants asked him if that was the guy he was recruiting where the other team was staking you out ...
Rollie said "no, that was Terry Sykes".
Then he went on to weave this quick tale [paraphrasing - not direct quotes]:

I went to see Rick Robey play down in Louisiana, he was a very highly regarded recruit that wound up going to Kentucky and playing in the NBA - he was with the Celtics for a long time ... this kid named Terry Sykes kicked Robey's butt in the game I was scouting so I started recruiting Sykes because I thought he was a guy with NBA potential and we wouldn't be able to get Robey anyway.
Grambling was all over Sykes and hardly anyone else was recruiting him.
We went down to visit Sykes and the Grambling guys were watching us from a couple of cars they had parked across the streets from Sykes' house. They followed our every move and wound up getting him to stay local and play for Grambling. Turns out he did play in the NBA so I was right about that.
