An Interesting Mention of Villanova in the ACC

In a follow-up story in the Raleigh NC News & Observer (1 October 2016) about ND's loss at home to Duke...the possibility of ND football added to the ACC along with either Navy or Villanova.

And there are issues that go beyond Notre Dame. Even if Notre Dame wanted to become the ACC’s 15th team, the ACC would need to add a 16th for balance. As the Big 12 can attest, the pool of expansion candidates is exceedingly shallow, and there are few that meet both the ACC’s academic and athletic standards. Barring a collapse of the Big 12 that makes Texas available, or Villanova jumping to FBS – the Wildcats are light years away from that, not to mention millions of dollars – only Navy makes sense.

Just thought Opie and I should pass this along.

2013 recruitment of a big man...

...for those of you that remember, landed JW, Daryl Reynolds. There were four options JW was looking at during the Spring recruiting season: Tyler Roberson, Syracuse; Gavin Schilling, Illinois; Austin Colbert, Illinois; and of course, Daryl Reynolds.

Roberson was thought to be JW's preference, but he eventually chose Syracuse, where he has played three seasons. Roberson hasn't quite lived up to the hype of his recruiting and has been a bit of a thorn in Boehiem's side, so much so that he publicly criticized his game to the media. He did become a rebounding machine and helped surprisingly lead Syracuse to the 2016 Final 4. Roberson returns and is probably the best of the four players.

Gavin Schilling chose Michigan State and through is junior year he has not been anything more than a midlevel bench player averaging around 4 PPG and 3 RPG in 12.5 minutes of play.

Austin Colbert chose Illinois and transferred to Old Dominion University after two years of minimal playing time. His sophomore statistics were 1.5 PPG and 1.5 RPG. Colbert becomes eligible to play this season at ODU.

Finally, VU signed Daryl Reynolds, a local player out of Lower Merion HS, who did a post grad year. Reynolds averaged 3.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG for VU last year averaging 17.5 MINS/G. In his one start last year against Providence, DR put up about 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also shot approximately 64% FGs for the season.

In a final analysis, once Roberson was committed to Syracuse, it appears as though JW got the best of the remaining players. Reynolds has improved every year since arriving on campus and, undoubtedly, will be the starting center when Nova takes the court in November.

I stated that JW had settled for Reynolds and was having difficulty recruiting big men, after losing out on Schilling and Colbert. I thought Colbert could be a pretty good player, but we will have to see what he does at ODU to determine whether I was accurate in my assessment. Reynolds become a very nice player at Nova and solid big off the bench last season. Much of his success has come with building up his body and that he plays within his skill set as well as any recent player that I can remember. The VU coaching and training staffs need to be commended in the progression of DR and his game. He is a solid player for Nova and has demonstrated that he can be counted on to play a large block of minutes. As a starter, his confidence will grow and I have no doubt he will be an effective player in the post for Nova in 2016-2017.

I noticed last season that DR could make the 12'-15' foul line jumper that JW likes his big guys to take. With an entire offseason to work on his short jumper, I expect that his game will expand quite a bit. DR will play around 20 minutes per game this year and I would bet that his offensive stats will only be behind Roberson in the crowd of 2013 PF recruiting targets.

For the record defense stars again, scores 2 TDs in 31-14 win over Lafayette

Potential all american lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon recorers funble for 25 yd. TD on first play from Scrimmage. 3 interceptions, 2 by last week's star Ron Robbe and 1 45 yd. TD int return by Jeff Steeb. 4 defensive TDs in first 4 games after none in 11 games last season. Passing game seems off but solid running game grinds it out again. Forbes and White score TDs. Hooray, first FG of season kicked by Smith who was also 4 for 4 on PATS.

Recruiting 2016

Folks, hope you do not mind, but lets start a clean thread about recruiting for 2016. There is already a commitment - Amari Onque-Shabazz (Union Catholic, NJ) - mentioned on another thread - Commitment. Sounds good, but the best part of it is that she is a team mate of Sydney McLaughlin, who comes-out in 2017. Does this give VU a head start on recruiting her?

There is some extraordinary talent coming-out in 2017. Need to keep that in mind going forward.

On another thread (?), Or1on mentioned Sarah Walker of Germantown Friends. Outstanding. I fear she is probably heading to an Ivy. Hope I am wrong. There are others. One is ideal for Villanova, but no one seems to know she exists. Good. Let's keep it that way. Season is just beginning

Initial Thoughts On 2016-17 Schedule

On Tuesday, the full 2016-17 schedule was released. Let’s take a look at some of the key dates as well as at some TV and venue notes.

The Wildcats will begin their title defense on November 11 against Lafayette.

Villanova will get an early test when they travel to Indiana to play Purdue in the Gavitt games on November 14. Purdue finished last season 26-9 and tied for third in the Big Ten, and will have a very formidable frontcourt. There is a very real possibility the Boilermakers will be a top-20 team when this game rolls around.

From there, they will travel to South Carolina to play in the Charleston Classic from November 17-20. They will open on the 17th with Western Michigan, and will have a potential matchup with Wake Forest or UTEP the following day. The Charleston Classic games will air on ESPN2.

Big 5 play kicks off on November 29 at Penn and will conclude December 13 against Temple. In between will be St. Joe’s on December 3 and at LaSalle on December 6 (also scheduled for ESPN2), with a big out-of-conference matchup with Notre Dame interrupting the Big 5 run on December 10.

The other highly anticipated out-of-conference game will be against Virginia, where the Wildcats will look to avenge last season’s defeat. That game will be on January 29 at the Wells Fargo Center. This could be a matchup of top-10 teams.

The three other games at the Wells Fargo Center will be Marquette on January 7, Providence on January 21, and St. John’s on February 4.

Looking at the in-conference schedule, there are three key stretches for ‘Nova. The first one is a four-game stretch where the Wildcats will travel to Creighton on 12/31 and then to Butler on January 4, followed by home dates with Marquette on January 7 and Xavier on January 10. Xavier will be flirting with a top-10 ranking to start the season, and Creighton may find themselves in the top-25. Butler may be hanging around the top-25 as well, and Marquette should be much improved.

The next gauntlet begins on January 16 when Seton Hall comes to town as part of the Big East MLK Jr. Day marathon on FS1. On January 21 Providence will visit, then comes a trip to Marquette on January 24. The big showdown with Virginia is up next, interrupting the conference schedule, on January 29. ‘Nova then travels to Providence on February 1. Seton Hall and Providence both suffered major losses from last season’s rosters, but the Pirates will still be reigning Big East Tournament Champions and Ed Cooley always has his Friars ready to play.

Finally, the ‘Cats will have a tough three-game run near the end of the season, beginning with a trip up the New Jersey turnpike to visit Seton Hall on February 18. That is followed by two home dates, Butler on February 22 and Creighton on the 25th.

The regular season will conclude on March 4 with a game at Georgetown.

We are one step closer to seeing the Wildcats back on the court.

VU measuring stick Pitt shows improvement in beating Penn St. 42-38.

Pitt showed great improvement from their first game against Villanova more than doubling their yardage gained against Big 10 Penn St. Cats defense gave Pitt a much tougher battle. Of course Cats need to improve their passing game and special team place kicking game a lot to have a post season. I think this will happen.. Meanwhile Pitt will be the first non VU score to check every week.
