NJ 800/1500 Phenom Ajee Wilson Picks Florida State

Here's the story -- looks like Villanova was not in the mix:

Neptune's Ajee' Wilson ends the suspense, will head to Florida State to continue track career

Ajee' Wilson just completed the second major hurdle of her high school track and field career.

The first was nearly a forgone conclusion. After a breakthrough sophomore year where she ran the fourth-fastest 1,600 meters in state history and won a NJSIAA Meet of Champions title in the 800 meters, it was only a matter of time before she left an indelible imprint on New Jersey track and field.

That moment came last summer in Lille, France.

Wilson, coming off a sprained ankle which forced her to skip the M of C and the New Balance Nationals, came from behind with an incredible surge to win the IAAF World Youth Championships 800 title in 2:02.64 , breaking the long-standing state record of 2:03.54 which U.S. Olympian and former Columbia High star Joetta Clark set in 1979.

And now, Wilson has tackled obstacle No. 2, and it didn't require nearly as much training. After a lengthy search which included several top-flight Division 1 programs, Wilson, perhaps the most sought-after girls track and field recruit in the country, has chosen Florida State as her college destination.

``I feel relieved that it's over,'' Wilson said, ``but I actually had a good experience. Some people find the college search stressful. I was able to enjoy the entire process.''

Wilson, a student at the Neptune Academy of Allied Health and Science, also considered Texas, LSU and Tennessee before settling on competing for the Seminoles and enjoying campus life in Tallahassee. Florida State was her fourth and final official visit.

``My first visit was LSU and I was so positive when I got home that I was going there,'' Wilson said. ``Then I visited Texas and I thought I was going there. My mother just told me, stay open-minded, take your time. Thanks to her I was able to make a more informed decision.''

Florida State's women's track team is coached by Bob Braman, and the women's distance coach is Karen Harvey. FSU finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships last spring.

Wilson said it was the coaches and combination of other things which put Florida State over the top. She added that FSU's location on the East Coast was not a factor even though she happened to choose the eastern-most school among those she considered.

``The coaching staff, first of all, they were all so wonderful to me,'' Wilson said. ``I felt like I could learn a lot from them. I liked the way the campus was set up, where everything seemed close. And the students made me feel like I could fit right in. Of all the schools I saw, I felt I would be most comfortable there.''

Now that Wilson owns the 800m state record and has enjoyed being crowned a world champion, she maintains simple goals for the remainder of her high school track career.

Those goals, she said, do not include any time targets, like for example, breaking two minutes in the half-mile. When Wilson split 2:00.59 at the 2010 outdoor nationals, it led many to believe a sub-2:00 was only a matter of time, so to speak.

``My main goal is to run well at the World Juniors,'' she said. ``I don't have any time goals. I was happy to get the decision over with because all I wanted to worry about was my running.''

Gotham Games

Who is Erin Ryan? Anchored the women’s 4x800. Believe she showed up at an earlier meet. She has been on the soccer team, but ran track with some distinction in high school …?

What happened to the men in the 400? Times were not good. VU’s best (from last year) runs 52.2. Right, this was just a warm-up, extended training, early in the season … And you are gong to compete in the DMR at the Millrose Games? Right … Well, you have a month to get ready.

Women’s mile? Courtney Chapman runs 5:02.6 and loses to a high schooler, Alex Panisse, who incidentally chose Tennessee over VU, … Note: the top HS girls have been running around 4:50 on the same track in the past week.

Venables looked good at 3000. So did Sam Ellison in 1000. Shericka Ward is always good.

Neutts is probably the women’s number two miler and may be the team’s next “star” …

This kid Christopher O’Sullivan (red shirt freshman) looks like a comer - 2nd in Unseeded Mile (4:15).

UConn prevails 72-49

Despite playing a spirited game, the inability to handle the full court press doomed Nova to long stretches of offensive efficiency in both halves, spoiling any chance for a major upset.

With UConn's normal starting lineup including 6-5 Dolson, the modest 3/4 court pressure caused little problems for Nova to start off and a baseline layup by Sweeney at the 13 minute mark finished up an 8-0 run and had us leading 15-11. At that point Gino went with a small, speedy line-up, going full bore with the press putting all five up at mid-court or closer. For a ten minute stretch Nova shot 0-5 and had 11 turnovers to trail 32-17 at the 3:30 mark. From there, threes by Kane, Burford and Roberts pulled us back within eight but a three ball with nine seconds left put UConn up by 37-26 at the half.

The second half was virtually a repeat of the first. Threes by Sweeney and Roberts and two baskets by Leer got us back to within five at 41-36 with 14 minutes left. At that point Dolson rotated out and the stifling full court press was back on. Nova only scored four baskets the rest of the way with the fourth coming with only 20 seconds left, getting outscored by 31-14 to have UConn winning going away. Tiffany Hayes used her tremendous speed and three point shooting ability to lead the scoring. Rachel Roberts led the way again with 16 points for Nova and is having a fine stretch of games. Nova had 23 turnovers for the game, after coming in leading the nation in only committing about 11 a game.

Bottom line, we beat their starting line-up by 10 points and got crushed by their five guard line-up by 33 points. An announced crowd of 3,200 saw a Nova team that apparently had shrugged off the heartbreaking loss at Marquette Tuesday night to play tough defense and shoot the ball reasonably well against a top five team. The inability to get past the mid-court line against the full bore press was disappointing, but not totally unexpected. After not utilizing the press against us the past two years, it was anticipated that Gino expected to have to put some pressure on us this year and they certainly did so. Look for Rutgers to attempt to do the same to us later this year.

An incredibly important game on Tuesday as the final non-conference and Big Five title game against Penn. Assuming a loss coming up on Saturday at Notre Dame, we need to get back into the win column against an improved Penn team to get some confidence back before heading into a stretch of winnable Big East games. A loss to Penn and we are pretty much out of any consideration for an NCAA bid and potentially on the way to the season spiralling out of control.

thread gone amuck!!!!

a country that shoots down every anti muslim US stereotype. Country is 98% muslim.
I was in the 3rd largest city, Izmir, which is on the western coast (about 3M people).

Observations:
1. I see more women in fully clothed strick muslim attire on the streets of Delaware than I did on the streets of Izmir. Women were free to wear anything (and thankfully they did, Izmirian women are beautiful), go anywhere, drive, drink, smoke, etc.
2. I saw more alcohol in the Izmir bars/restaurants than I did in USA. You can actually walk down the street with an open beer can, I can't do that here.
3. I went to an academic conf. and met with many students. Their students are much more politically aware and voice their opinions more strongly than US students. In the conf., there was a lecture to students from Turk biz leaders, the students angrily voiced their opinions (freely and w/ no retribution) to these leaders. It was pretty cool to watch.
4. Turks recognize that the future of their country (which has a huge population of young people) lies in education. Massive gov't spending going on to build new schools/universities and train their teachers better. They get it!
5. If you are ever in that part of the world, work Izmir into your plans. Just a beautiful city, tons to see, easy to get around by int'l standards, food is unbelievably good.

Aside, travelled to the ancient Roman city of Ephasus. Truly amazing place. Also saw the house of the virgin mary, the Temple of Artemis (1 of 7 ancient wonders of the world) and the tomb of St. John. US history is cool but this stuff was going back to BC times in some places.

Nova at Marquette to be on TV

At the end of the Notre Dame - UConn game today it was announced that CBS sports was showing a Big East doubleheader on Tuesday night with the Nova-Marquette game to be aired at 9:00 EST. Let's hope the ladies put on a good show against a beatable opponent. Then it's UConn at home on Saturday, Penn the following Tuesday and then off to Notre Dame. A tough stretch coming up.

Nova players in National and Big East stat leaders

Nova team/players in the stat leaderboards (thru Sunday 12/11)-

Team is 1st in Division I in least fouls per game (11.50), 2nd in least turnovers (11.30 p/g), 9th in Threes made (8.3 p/g), 6th in Assist to T/O ratio (1.32), 29th in defense (52.1 p/g). The fact that we are playing an up-tempo game plan this year makes the low foul, turnover and opponent points numbers even more impressive.

Individuals - Sweeney is 8th in double/doubles (5), 29th in F/G% (56%) and 48th in rebounds (9.6 p/g). She is 6th in B/E scoring at 17.1 p/g, 2nd in rebounds and 1st in defensive rebounds (6.8 p/g) and won the Big Five player of the week for the second week in a row, and followed up her Big East player of the week honor with an runner up mention this week to Sugar Rogers from Georgetown. Suhey leads the B/E in 3-Point percentage at 62% but does not have enough made shots to qualify for the national leaderboard. Pearson has an incredible Assist/TO ratio of 4.67 but is 2 assists shy of qualifying for the national or B/E leaderboard. I think she would be second nationally and first in the B/E with that ratio.

We received one vote in the coaches poll this week and currently have the 14th best RPI in RealtimeRPI.com with an oppenents strength of schedule ranked at 21st. They project us out at to finish at 18-10 (9-7 in the B/E). Note that their projection does not reflect the unknown opponent in the second game of the Holiday tournament and the Div. II game against Phila. Univ. does not get counted in determing the RPI nor will it count as a win for NCAA tournament consideration at the end of the year.

Nova slips against West Va. 61-56

Unbalanced scoring doomed the LadyCats to defeat tonight. Roberts, Leer and Pearson maganged to shoot a combined 17-26 (10-14 on threes) but the rest of the team was dismal 4 of 30 and 1 of 13 on threes.

An 11-0 run by WVA early in the first half put us down by eleven but we managed to regroup and only be down 29-28 at the half. A three ball by Roberts with 7:30 to go tied up the game at 48 all, but we couldn't convert a few opportunities to get a lead and eventually fell behind by nine on a long three to beat the shot clock with 2:14 to go.

Two more threes by Roberts got us to within four with 1:29 to play and after a tie-up turned the ball over to Nova, Pearson was fouled on an inside move but could only convert the first half of the two foul shots to leave us down three with 47 ticks left on the clock. WVA milked the clock and their center missed a layup but Leer was called for a foul and the two shots were converted with 21 seconds left to ice the game.

Sweeney was held to only four points and was kept out of the inside flow the whole game and she actually put up four three point attempts, more in frustration I think rather than good shot selction. In both halves, Nova had WVA in foul trouble five minutes in but could never capitalize by drawing any more fouls and would up only shooting four free throws the entire game.

Although Leer scored 14, most were on threes and the whole game Nova's offense was playing on the perimeter and WVA did a good job of denying the ball inside and at the same time pressuring the ball out front. We shot just well enough to keep us in the game but missed on numerous opportunities to get out in front. On several occasions it appeared that we were getting out-hustled to loose balls or rebounds and Holeman had an especially poor game inside against their two bigs. Roberts finished with 18 and Pearson had 13 with three assists and once again, no turnovers.

The game was there for the taking. Nova can't afford to lose to many of these kind of games if they expect to finish in the top half of the Big East this year.

corzine/MF Global

I just heard this little tidbit and had to share. For those who have followed the Corzine/MF global and know the real story behind him leaving GS, this is just priceless. As MF Global was spiraling down he sold 100's of millions off to....yes, Goldman. Ain't that just a bitch as it all comes around. I didn't think he had it in him.

Nova Bubble Bursts against Monmouth

After an amazing second half to blow away St. Bonnie yesterday, the magic ride ended today with a 49-48 loss to a less than mediocre Monmouth team. Not at the game but the box score tells a sorry tale. Sweeney scored 20 and brought down nine boards but missed five foul shots. Gardner played well scoring 12 and dishing out five assists. No one else scored more than four with wretched overall, foul and three point shooting today.

Nova still could have pulled this one out, missing three shots in the last 20 seconds. Doesn't look like they deserved to win this one though. For a team that looks like they might be on the bubble for an NCAA bid at the end of the year, this one may come back to haunt them as a really bad loss, unlke the Princeton and Delaware games.

The team has a 9-3 non-conference record, with the Penn game remaining and one of those wins against a D-II team that won't be taken into consideration at tourney bid time. Fifteen Big East games remain with a win in the bag already. They will probably need to win at least seven of the remaining B/E games, including a ranked team, beat Penn and pick up an opening round win in the B/E tournament to get serious consideration for a bid. The Big East will probably not get as many teams in this year as in the past. A tall order, as proved today, this talented young team will still take some lumps this year. Hopefully a learned experience that will help them overcome any letdown in games to come, this year and next.

Come on out on Tuesday night to cheer them on against Pitt at the Pavilion as they prepare for the meat of the B/E schedule.

Recruiting - Stanford

You should check-out this article in today's NY Times - "Standing Out and Blending In at Stanford." Their PR people are out there selling the school. But if you read it, you will begin to understand why so many kids opt to go there - why Aislin Cuffe chose Stanford over VU - even though she would have been a national champion (XC) had she come to VU.

Found the article a little self-serving - look how wonderful we are - but still one cannot but be impressed.

Personally I like smaller schools. Been on the Stanford campus and it is huge. But it has the California girls ...and it is one of the top four or five academic institutions. But I question that when you have Rice as one of your representatives (but that is another whole political argument) and it is the home of the Hoover Institute (again another political view point). Still VU has Marcus. And he is a very good man. Should mean something. But then I sometimes feel that things like that aren't important anymore.

Either way, read the article.

Polled Republicans want Tax Increases?

So let me get this straight, a higher % of Democrats are in favor of the payroll tax cut, whereas Republicans are split as to whether they want to LOWER taxes?

Here's the irony, the extension of the Bush tax cuts need to be passed through legislation, otherwise they expire, just like the payroll tax cut does. I'm sure they'll be split as to whether they want that extended, right?

Not to pick on Republicans here, but I think this just goes to show how twisted and screwed up the American population is. They'll pretty much believe or by into anything as long as it follows the rhetoric of their party, even if it contradicts everything they are ostensibly about.

Definition of Crony Capitalism

This piece...done as lightly as possible by Obama's own Washington Post shows the massive failure of his vision. Even the headline is misleading...should be "For Obama's green-car revolution, fits and more fits"

When will he learn that central command economies don't work? Pouring hard earned tax payer money into his chosen winners doesn't work? Please...please make sure this guy is a one termer...

Nova Overtakes St. Joes 52-46

In a hard fought contest, Nova overcame some illnesses, a slow start in both halves and some second half defensive lapses to come from behind to beat St. Joes.

As could be expected, the Hawk defense keyed on the red-hot Laura Sweeney, doubling and triple teaming her as she went to the basket. After some forced shots that wouldn't go, a turnover, and a few outside shots on kickouts wouldn't fall, St. Joes was out in from 7-0 and eventually 16-6. Emily Suhey arrived to start the ball rolling with Nova's first three of the day. After trading threes (Nova's by Devon Kane)the deficit stood at 19-12 when Sweeney picked up her second quick foul and headed to the bench for the final nine minutes of the half with only two points.

After falling behind by 21-12, Nova ran off eight straight points to close to 21-20 on threes by Rachel Roberts and Jesse Carey and a two pointer by Megan Pearson. Down 24-20, Nova held for the last shot, isolating Pearson on the left, but her lane shot wouldn't go down but saved the ball from going out under the basket, flicked it to Suhey who calmly spun and hit nothing but net at the buzzer to end the half only down one point. Nova was fortunate that the early St. Joe shooting cooled off and that the team rallied with Sweeney on the bench.

The momentum didn't carry over as St. Joes ran off the first six points of the second half to again go up by seven. However, as Nova spread the floor a little further, St. Joe seemed willing to allow Sweeney to drive one on one and instead concentrated on preventing the kick out passes. 16 points for Sweeney in the second stanza pulled Nova out in front to stay, taking the lead at 40-38 with eight minutes to play. The second half was almost all an inside game as St. Joes couldn't hit anything outside and Nova was only 1-4 on three balls with Suhey connecting again.

St. Joes only trailed by 48-44 with three minutes left but missed three layups and two foul shots over a two minute span and still had possession of the ball when Kane stole the ball, bringing it to the bench for a time out with 1:15 on the clock. On a well designed in-bounds play, the left side cleared out while Sweeney slipped in front of her defender under the basket and was hit with a perfect inbound pass from the sideline by Pearson to get an easy bucket to put the game in hand. After a basket by St. Joes, Kane sank two foul shots to ice the game. Sweeney was fouled with seconds left on the clock but missed the front end of the one and one to miss a shot at yet another 20 point effort.

Sweeney finished with 18 and 9 boards. Suhey once again ignited the offense (3 of 5 on threes) and scored a buzzer beater three for the second time in three games. She is now 13-21 on the season from behind the arc and has jumped started our offense several times already this year. With Sweeney on the bench for a long stretch of the first half she got lots of PT today and more than held her own. Roberts and Pearson both had 8 boards apiece to go along with some clutch shots.

Once again, a win in the kind of game that we lost last year. Outside shooting still needs to improve to give Sweeney some more room to move inside and balance out the scoring. 12 days off for exams and then at Temple to try to clinch a least a tie for the Big Five title. Penn has already lost a Big Five game so with a win at Temple the worst we could do is a tie with someone for the title.

I will try to post up some Nova national stat leaders and other info after the NCAA stats are released early next week.
