At least the Fly Guys grew some balls and made the playoffs in his honor.

Very sad. He was the finest owner that this city has had in my lifetime. He made mistakes for sure but it was never because he didn't care about his team and wanted desperately for his team to win another Cup.. He loved the Flyers and did so much for countless amount of ex players especially those down on their luck. He educated the children of some former players who died very early in life. RIP.

To honor him, Flyers vow to at least make their opening round series go 5 games against Caps.

A truly great Philadelphian.

Hope the Flyers go on a run for him. I don't see them as a Cup contender but there is no reason they can't beat the Caps - who historically choke in the playoffs.

previous years' teams have nothing to do with this years' teams.

I don't know if they are favorites or not, but previous seasons have nothing to do with this one. Watching Villanova this year in the tournament should be the ultimate example of that...

in the past, the Caps had poor goaltending and/or defense. this year, that is not the case.

the Pens are down to their 3rd goalie and are missing some other key players. I can't see them making a run.

I will simplify it, I just don't think Ovechkin is the type of player to lead a team to a Cup.

Please respect the dead and keep your dumb hockey talk to some other thread. This is about honoring Mister Snider.

You don't really watch the games, do you?

btw - one down with Snider. Hopefully Jacobs goes down soon too. Won't be anything but a net positive for the NHL.

Much classier than Dmil's post.

I do though. I know that Ovechkin is the best goal scorer in the NHL and can take over a game/series. I just don't see it happening throughout the course of 4 series in the playoffs. He takes too many shifts off and that is not conducive to winning the the playoffs.

Also - classy post.

dmil just upset knowing that the Rangers are going to get pasted by the Pens. Good for the Flyers for winning a meaningless game last night which set the matchup.

That's fair. However losing to the Flyers is probably not in the cards.
Agreed, if the Flyers win it will be a big upset. I think they have a chance - they played the Caps tough all season and are peaking at the right time. For the Flyers to win Voracek needs to get back to form and Schenn needs to build off his big regular season. I except Giroux and Simmonds to lead the way, but they need more.

I think Florida (Panthers) is a such a fugazi hockey town but I would love to see Jagr have a nice playoffs. That guy is an absolute machine. I read something the other day that from the age of 7 he started doing 1000 squats a day.

Saw this post on fbook from a friend - this to me will be Mr. Snider's lasting impact:

"My son has hockey try-outs this afternoon, along with many many other kids in the area. All of this interest in hockey is directly related to Ed Snider, the godfather of hockey in Philadelphia, who passed away today. His legacy is all of the young players that love the game from this area, and he will be missed."

NYR could have tanked the day before and gotten the Panthers. On one hand you cite past years as indicators for this years playoffs, which would obviously mean the Pens lose to the Rangers like the last two years, but on the other you say the Pens are going to paste the Rangers. We'll see. Have some obvious concerns about this year's NYR, particularly on D which has been a strength for them for a while now, but not exactly looking at the Pens as some sort of juggernaut. Solid team, nothing great.

Reason I ask if you watch the games, and I will ask again in light of your follow up, is that if there is one thing about Ovechkin is that in the playoffs he is an absolute beast to handle. The Rangers have been able to key on him in the past because guys like Backstrom and Mike Green were no shows and they were basically a one line team. Still, Ov8 was a handful every shift. They are far more balanced this year, AO is playing both ways, Kuznetsov is ridiculous and probably as dangerous as Ovechkin, Holtby probably winning the Vezina and guys like Oshie make them better all around. It's a goofy sport but if you think this team isn't loaded you're missing it.

Far as Snider - the guys was a relic living in an era that was dead and buried 30 years ago. He was ground zero for these work stoppages (to be fair Jacobs was probably worse), he allowed his franchise to be run by a philistine of an exec for decades, favored goon play till the day he croaked, (even when he had, by accident mostly, plenty of skilled players) favored work stoppages for a few more bucks (screw the fans and those greedy players!). Snider, on one hand claiming the work stoppages were for the good of the smaller markets, then turning around and throwing 110M at Shea Weber to eff over a smaller market. Guy was a Dbag who deserved to die without seeing another Cup. Was awful for hockey and it's not at all a bad thing that he's gone from it.

tl;dr

Jesus Christ, Dmil. It's sports show some compassion. I mean on the day he dies you probably could have stayed away from the politics of hockey.

I'm not versed enough in the comings and goings of back room hockey deals that may or may not of favored someone over someone else. I'm sure if you dig deep enough you can find dirt on just about any owner in sports. Regardless, even though I was never part of the Mr. Snider cult, he did do far more good for the CoP area than bad. So, that part of it should be appreciated.

You mean you never ran into Gary Bettman while shopping for a new washer/dryer in a mom and pop's appliance shop?

I never met the guy, i don't know him, and I don't care about him. Why should I have compassion for a guy who actively took away something I enjoy just to shove a few more bucks in his pocket? Why should I have an ounce of compassion about a guy who was intent on setting game back decades on end? Year after year? What's the point?

Fact is, I can't believe Flyer fans aren't happy today. Guy was a detriment to his own franchise. For decades. That's obvious, just like results.

Hockey fans like Dmil are so weird. Very bizarre culture around the sport. Calling players by nicknames and such. Also a weird clientele at the games. Men w ponytails, black jeans, etc.

People dying, regardless of who they are, especially in sports, should never make anyone happy. Whether you know them or not. Not really worthy of a debate if you have even a little bit of compassion. But whatever....

As time moved on his desire to win overtook him, so he did make decisions or support decisions that were detrimental. 100% agree. Overall, he did a lot for the area and brought hockey here when many said it would never work. His good far outweighed his bad. His passion never faded and in his mind he always thought he was doing the right thing by the team. And as stated, he mis-caluclated more than a few things along the way, but it wasn't out of not trying or caring.

I'm not privy to the political, but I'm sure some what you say is true, but as a Rangers' fan I'm sure some is embellished, too. Always two sides to a story.

Didn't say it made me happy. I said i just don't care. Would probably care more if Dolan died. Or Fred Wilpon. That's saying something.

Far as Snider, if he didnt bring hockey to CoP, it's not like someone else wouldn't have. Sure, he paid his players, then would force lock outs so he wouldn't have to pay his players as much. He was front and center on this. He was Bettman's second biggest apologist behind Jeremy Jacobs, and pulled as many strings behind the scenes of a tumultuous league as anyone. And isn't Comcast known for being the worst provider in history? Really has nothing to do with being a Ranger fan - and more having to do with actually enjoying the game itself being played by professionals who are either not locked out or bonafide goons who have no business on the ice.

Happy he built a few rinks around the area. Good for him. I won't miss him and my guess is, Flyer fans won't either.

Ohhh, you don't know the cult-like type Flyers' fans all that well. They will miss him tremendously. That one is a no brainer.

And I didn't say you were happy. I referenced your comment, "I can't believe Flyers fans aren't happy."

Yeah, now he is just talking out of his ass. Mr. Snider is beloved in Philadelphia. All you need to know is that everyone calls him Mr. Sinder, not Ed Snider.
