Mister Snider Remembered

Yeah, now he is just talking out of his ass. Mr. Snider is beloved in Philadelphia. All you need to know is that everyone calls him Mr. Sinder, not Ed Snider.

Well we're talking about a fan base that often literally bases their lives based around a team like the Eagles that has never won a Super Bowl, so i guess ole Ed fit right in. He's beloved because he gave a largely mook fanbase a team that only mooks could love, but not one that could win in the NHL. But if they are interested in actually winning a Cup, this is good news for Flyer fans in the long run. Rejoice. There is light ahead. And if it comes with Bettman now having a little less support, which it does, all the better. Win Win.

Oh, and maybe this nonsense about making the nets bigger will finally stop. He was big on that. DUMB.

Flyers fans are all the same.

funny story, i was walking to dinner on Sat night on 12th and Locust and I hear these two brain surgeons having a cigarette and miller lite on the steps of a dingy philly bar. all i hear was how can the city have a parade for Villanova, they should stay in Radnor, leave us alone. what was he wearing? white new balances, baggy jeans, a flyers sweater and a backwards flyers hat.

Bitter, bitter poster.

Bitter about what? The Flyers not winning since Nixon was in office? I don't think so. But you make a good point. I guess I will miss him. I mean, the league is hard enough as it is...all this time I could count on the Flyers to not win in the end. Now that might change, particularly if they wind up being run by someone who doesn't pine for the days of Dave Schultz and Andre Dupont. I am obviously hoping Bobby Clark takes over again. That'll be back to business as usual.

Very sad. He was the finest owner that this city has had in my lifetime. He made mistakes for sure but it was never because he didn't care about his team and wanted desperately for his team to win another Cup.. He loved the Flyers and did so much for countless amount of ex players especially those down on their luck. He educated the children of some former players who died very early in life. RIP.

Finest owner? They haven't won a cup in my lifetime and I have gray pubes.

You must not watch the games either then. The Flyers were not even expected to be in the playoffs this year. Hextall is doing things differently and the timeline is further advanced than anyone thought. Wait until next year though, they have a lot of young talent that project to be impact players.

If I was a Rangers fan I would be in the same boat as you, wishing for things to go back to the old ways with the Flyers. Let's face it, Lundqvist is that whole team. Without him they don't even sniff the playoffs. And he has what, 1 more year where he can play at this level, maybe 2.

Flyers are probably the team that is trending upward the most in the NHL right now, the future is very bright.

Also, both of our teams have no room to talk about winning. It was ages ago that either team won the Cup. Sure, the Rangers won it more recently but put the 2 franchises side by side since 1994 and show me one person who things the Rangers have been more successful.

Lunqvusit is the whole team? Have you seen their record with Raata this year? (11-6-2) Did you see it last year when Lunqvuist was out for 6 or 8 weeks? (Talbot, 21-9-4) Obviously you didnt bother to look, otherwise I'm not sure you make such a dumb statement.

So, obviously they are bit more than just a goaltender. Maybe being 7th in goals this year helped? (without the guy who scored 40 last year playing most of the season) Maybe being top 3 in goals last year helped? Maybe a high end top 4 D helped? Maybe the system they play helped? These are easy things to look up if you bothered.

For all this feel good talk about the Flyer season - it's a .500 team when you consider how many games they have lost in OT, it took the second to last day to squeak in a pretty mediocre playoff pool. Their prospect pool is not all that impressive, so not sure how much help is coming in the next few years. Giroux is trending down three years consecutive now. Goeth is really good, but he's still a lone wolf on their D. How rosie is this picture exactly? Anything would look good next to the last year, but not sure I'd be touching myself just yet.

DMill do you honestly think the Rangers have a chance to do anything without Lundqvist? come on now

I didn't say that - simply said he's not the whole team. They score. They defend. And they have a good goaltender. I mean, to say it's just him is stupid. Yeah, he's good. He's consistently good. But there is a reason why he's good beyond his own skills. He'd have far lesser numbers on the Flyers or the Leafs, and conversely, a team like the Leafs does not make the playoffs by adding only him. He's far from the only reason they have been good in recent years. They have actually gotten similar numbers over an extensive period of games without him the last two years. We're talking a sample size of over 40 games. Not small. He's got very good players in front of him. Also has 3 lines who can score. It aint just him.

Since 1994:

(Win - Loss - Tie - OTL)

Rangers: 789 - 657 - 94 - 113
Playoffs in 13/21 years with a record of 72-76, 14 series won, 1 Eastern Conference Championship, 1-2 (series) vs Flyers

Flyers: 838 - 560 - 121 - 136
Playoffs in 18/21 years with a record of 101 - 97, 18 series won, 2 Eastern Conference Championships, 2-1 (series) vs Rangers.

How exactly have I done that? You are the one who made a silly comment, and are splashing the keyboard over a .500 team. But, you antiquated owner is indeed dead, so perhaps there is hope.

Fake story

Hey, I never said the Rangers were some kind of juggernaut. Never even said they have been better than the Flyers lately. Didnt even hint it. Conversation was really about how Snider has always favored putting a neanderthal team on the ice as often as he could, hoping against hope t o recapture 1974. It never worked. Suddenly, it's "oh, but what about the Rangers!"

That's expected out of the CoP. I get it. Nothing new to see here really.

Glad you are back discussing hockey again - it has been missed on here. Today was the most fun I had on 4.6 in forever.

The thread is certainly a reminder of how annoying Dmil could be. Solid work no doubt.

The Flyers need more upfront in terms of prospects, Koencky is a good start. D-men wise they are in good shape. Actually, real good shape based on reports.

The difference between the Flyers/Ramgers this year are five OT losses. Really not that huge difference, but I'm sure we'll get a 19-paragraph summary telling us otherwise.

And a reminder of how obtuse the CoP fan base can be. Guy tries and fails to win a certain way for 40 years, is the leading force behind THREE work stoppages, and the fan base still gushes over him.

Getting called out with facts has always 'annoyed' burrie. See Hinkie, Sam.

Once again, who here said the Rangers were so much better this year? Not me. I dint even bring up the Rangers at all. But can't say i am shocked they were dragged into it. Typical.

I'm not historical as you are on this stuff. Nor, do I care as much. However, I'm interested. Could you produce all the articles written on how Snider led three work stoppages? I'm intrigued. Thanks.

Personally, I never gushed over him. I didn't refer to him as Mr. Snider either. I actually agree to a certain extent that being set in his ways and not changing with the times was as much a reason for the Flyers not winning cup since the 70's as any.

With that said, I do think he did a lot more good than bad. Bringing hockey to the city is noteworthy. Yea, I know someone else would have did it if he didn't. Just like someone else would've invented the lightbulb if Edison didn't. Does that mean it should t be recognized?

The guy died and it's OK for people to say a few nice things without some CoDB'er providing commentary that really wasn't needed on the day he died. But that's just me....

this is very fair IMO as a rival fan of both teams

the Rangers are slightly better at the moment. the Flyers are set up better for the future

Not sure anyone said otherwise...

Not as convinced of the Flyers incoming talent outside of Gostisbehere and Provorov. Sandheim maybe. None of the forwards appear to be elite, and none of them project as top 6 talents. Morin in coming up on 21, was a minus in the A this year and doesn't appear to be quick enough to defend on the next level. They continue to struggle to be above average in net as well. No help there either it seems. The Rangers cupboard is at least equally threadbare, if not more so overall, but Pavel Buchnevich might have as much upside as anyone in either system. NYR are currently one of the older team in the NHL at 28.2, but it's not at if CoP are that much younger. at 27.5, they aren't. Solid future on D (not a moment too soon) and kind of meh everywhere else, with current crop of forward trending the wrong way. Overall these are middle to back of the pack organizations when it comes to prospects. Don't see either of these teams winning much for a while. I think the Rangers MIGHT have one more run in them, but that's iffy at this point. Thought at points during the year they might be kind of being doing just enough to get in, and then turn it up late, but not sure I see that now. After that their window seems narrow without some very crafty changes.

Konecny is legit

I watched some of Sarnia this year because the Devils' top prospect Pavel Zacha played for them and TK always stood out in a good way. He absolutely projects as a top 6 player.

Yes, Konecny is projected to be a top 6 forward. And the Provonov could be a star, who is ranked very high. Sanheim has top two pairing potential, too. TSN had four Flyers' prospects in the top 50, three in top 29.

Hanging in my hood?

Next time hit me up, I'll buy you a drink.

And what a bitter, bitter hockey weirdo Dmill is. Shitting on a man the day he dies. I guess he's jealous Mr Snider Mr Snider won twice as many Cups as the historically bad Original 6 team he cheers on[/QUOTE]

I really cannot be bitter or jealous about a man who chased a team that was outdated for 30 years and hasn't won since I was a toddler. I really, really can't. It's impossible.

Not sure what so 'weirdo' about that. I'll tel what is a weirdo though -calling a guy "Mr Snider", when you most likely haven't met and don't know the man, is about as weird as it gets. Weird. I find the whole Mr Snider thing bizarre, clearly undeserved, pathetic and creepy. Perhaps the CoP can shift this now to Mr. Loria. It makes about as much sense. James Dolan throws money at his teams too, says he wants to win and blah blah blah. Should we start calling him Mr. Dolan? Not sure how failing to laud a guy who hasn't won in 40 years, still wants to play like goons, and engineered several work stoppages makes me a weirdo either. I'm pretty normal if you ask me. But this is kind of very CoP. It's almost like they wear the failure as a badge, and salute the owner as one of their own. Guy didn't even have the decency to croak in the CoP. One final dickslap to that city. Comcast service sucks, his team never wins and people walk around hanging some sort of deity tag on him. Weirdos.

I have to agree. The "Mr. Snider" tag is a bit weird. Then again, what else should I expect from possessed hockey fans? The game is full goofiness (though its'a really good sport in terms of level of play/competitiveness). I guarantee the only people who refer to him like this are Flyers' fans first and foremost of the four professional teams.

Well, people who work w me call me Dr Jackson. Not other physicians, of course, but the nurses, med assistants, office staff, etc. It's a sign of respect and deference.

Maybe he died in California bc he was getting his treatment there. Maybe he wanted to spend his final days in a temperate climate. Or maybe he wanted to have easy access to marijuana. Who knows? As a man who treats people at the end of their lives, I can think of many reasons.

Perhaps his final thought regarding hockey was that he established the sport in Philadelphia, started huge cable company, built two stadia w his own dough and without taxpayers money, and despite being an expansion team managed to win twice as many Stanley Cups as the New York Rangers in the post-Hitler era

Meant Lurie. Got my shitbag owners confused for sec.

Back to hockey - this new playoff format is pretty bogus. Fine with goofy wild card / top 3 division stuff - not crazy about it but whatever - but seed the teams properly after all the games are played. Pens and Rangers don't deserve to play one another in round one. Both deserve a team that didn't put up as many points in the regular season. Conversely, DET and TB proved to be lesser teams, but will play one another and one will advance. I'd argue the loser of the Pens/NYR series is better than those two teams. The Wings were the worst team in the conference to make the playoffs, and that's who the Caps earned the right to play.

I agree that the new playoff system is crap

how many times can we see the same matchups over and over?

Yea, I don't like it either. I don't mind division winners getting the top two seeds, but after that just order them
3 thru 8 based on points.

And not as many in the post Gerald Ford Era.

And I am surprised you cannot see the difference between being called Dr Rayhad and Mr Snider by people you do not know. You've earned your status by years of schooling and acquiring a massive amount of knowledge and expertise in a given field that has a tradition of being called with a certain prefix. This guy is a business man walking around like he's in a Wall Street Journal article. Gimme a break. He's earned it as much as any guy who went to work for many years deserves it - no more, no less. And all by people who don't know the guy. Weirdos. Like they were all kissing up to the boss even though they didnt work for him. Strange shit.

And Comcast over the years has received more tax breaks than you imagine. So it's not exactly not without taxpayer money.

Question for you - do you ask people to address you as Dr Rayhad in informal situations? Like, if we met at a basketball game or something, and exchanged introductions, would you request I call you Dr. Rayhad? I've had this done to me a few times. I always think they are cheeks.

Ok, I believe this is when ADP jumps in.

"Angry Philadelphians have also protested the tax breaks lavished on the company — at a time when the city’s underfunded school system is in dire crisis. The gleaming Comcast Center was subsidized by $42.75 million in state grants and other assistance, and the project is reaping millions of dollars from the city’s property-tax abatement for new construction. A planned second tower will stand 1,121 feet tall."

Mr. Rendell describes the upside to Philadelphia’s Comcast fealty as “incalculable.” And so are the costs, considering Comcast’s many subsidiaries based in the great American onshore tax haven of Delaware and by the corporate tax secrecy in Pennsylvania; Comcast has opposed efforts to close the “Delaware loophole.” According to Citizens for Tax Justice, Comcast paid an estimated average state corporate income tax rate of just 4 percent from 2008 to 2012.

Good Lord, no. I have actually have seen a colleague who I (up to that point) respected pull that move. I was taken aback and actually embarrassed for him. This was during w completely informal setting w people we worked with. I only insist upon being called Doctor by staff when patients are around or in formal communications.

His stadia were built without tax money. I respected that. I don't like teams holding the local citizens at the point of a bayonet to fund their stadia. Snider never did that

Fair enough ...not sure I am in full agreement though. It's kind of like stealing a guy's wallet, taking all the cash then saying well, you gotta respect me - at least I didnt hold a gun to your head and make you go the the ATM as well.

I had a friend whose dad was a doctor. He insisted we call him Doctor at like barbecues and shit. It was actually really awkward. I remember him saying to my dad "Can you tell your kids to call me doctor?" My dad was like, Charlie, we're at a cookout. How about just Mr J" He said "No. It's Doctor." I think my dad's response was "whatever floats your boat Charlie".

Yeah I never understood that. I don't have any children, but I couldn't see myself pulling the "Doctor" card on my kids' friends.

You can always tell how much someone's self worth is tied to their job by how they often they pulled that out. There was some d bag at work who had a PhD in computers who wanted to be called "Doctor". I told him if he insisted upon that, that I would have him fired. That knocked him down a bunch of pegs really quickly.

I wish I could deal w malignant cells as easily as I can deal w pretentious d bags
